Popped in on Saturday (28/05/11). Three Consett beers on, Red Dust, White Hot and Furnace Bitter. Guest beers included Springhead Bramley Apple & Northumberland Gold. Great pub, always a friendly welcome and attentive service.

This is a really nice "proper pub" no real themes to speak of except the real ale concept. It is a small cosy pub and has a nice atmosphere food is often laid on for the quizzes and sometimes the bands. The staff are friendly enough and the place is clean. The customers seem to be all students and older people so no trouble. The only 2 downsides are if you smoke there is no covered heated smoking area so you have to stand outside in the wind and rain with no protection at all. But for me the biggest problem here is that if you are not a real ale drinker you seem to be subsidising those who are. By this i mean a pint of a real ale is around 2.30 - 2.50 but if you want a pint of Kronenbourg its 2.90 they dont even charge that much at pubs in Newcastle city centre. That aside this is a nice little pub that is quite often full.

Being one of only two pubs to keep real ale in Consett I have found over the last few years the choice of beers to be a little disappointing.
They stock their own beers, but few beers from others and never anything 5% or above. No chance of a good IPA or premium bitter!
Its a shame as the previous landlord Paul would have a wide and varied beer selection of various types and strengths - the good old days.

Best pub in town for real ale, some of the staff could do with personality transplants.

This little pub on Sherburn Terrace brews it,s own award winning beers. White Hot at 4% with a grapefruit finish was good but the Red Dust at 4.5% a dark red beer was my favourite. Friendly Landlady and locals. A beer festival on August Bank Holiday weekend.
