user reviews of the Moorcock Inn, Garsdale Head

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visted a couple of times after long hikes from Garsdale railway station - it's approx 1 mile from the station. The decor is certainly weird when your half expecting rural & rustic and not particularly to my own taste . Limited varieties of beer/lager but I never had anything but a good pint. Food menu limited on my visits - I had a hot baguette on one visit which was tasty. Pubs been virtually empty on both visits but that's probably my timing (4pm mid-week). Lots of local information leaflets available.

I agree with the previous comment: the decoration is surprisingly hippy for the location on the moors(think: scatter cushions, sofas, a young man playing classical guitar) and on a wet winter day it was, sadly, cold inside. But there were 4 beers (including Copper Dragon, a Daleside beer and Black Sheep bitter) and a good if fairly simple food (eg. hot baguettes, filled Yorkshire puddings, fish and chips). Probably better on a warm summer's day.

Went in twice last week after walking on the fells. I must admit the bohemian decor of the pub isnt to my liking (doesnt go with the location of a pub on some desolate windswept moor but each to their own, eh). On the first visit it was cold - theres no open fire and the central heating wasnt on - this is absolutely criminal in my book, cos it was hailstoning outside! Two days later the heating was on and the atmosphere was all the better for it. Good, local beers - didnt sample the food tho - but for me this pub could be much better

Visited 8 Jun 05. The pub stands on a corner of the Yorkshire Dales and so is home to the walking fraternity. The real ale is brewed especially for the pub by The Moorcock Brewery which I believe is in nearby Hawes. We tried all three, and each one was superb.

The food was very tasty, and certainly well presented. Vegetarians will be happy with the choice available to them. Plenty of comfy sofas, make this pub a very restful place to visit.

It maybe in the middle of nowhere, but is definately worth the effort.
