Real ale let down by a lack of staff training and understanding. All too often the real ale is off and depending on who is on duty in the bar the attitude towards aq customer complaint can vary from understanding followed by replacement to " you've paid for it so now drink it" - it seems some of the female staff need urgent training!

The Volunteer Arms is our favourite pub in Dunbar. Friendly staff, two guest ales (constantly changing) on tap, TV only on for certain sports fixtures (I am not a sports fan, so couldn't say what the pattern is), but not dominating the pub. Since the smoking ban the owners glazed the patio area in front of the pub with two big parasols/umbrellas that span the whole area if opened.
We often go there for a (delicious) meal upstairs in the restaurant or bar lunch, either inside or outside if the sun is shining, we try not to miss the fortnightly open mic sessions, run by Wesley Bradd, on a Thursday night which attract some very good musicians and make for a brilliant night out!

Super little pub with a constantly changing two ales, always quick to go and in good nick. Easily the best pub in Dunbar, good atmos., friendly locals and good scran.

Enjoyed some great guest beers and freindly service here at New Year and the food looked good so was really looking forward to visiting again with my family early on Saturday evening - hopefully to enjoy a nice pint and get something to eat. On entering the pub the first thing we saw was a bloke with his trousers round his ankles inserting a beer bottle into his anus (presumably for some kind of bet?)the kids were horrifed and we made a sharp exit. As far as I could see the pub was populated by binge drinking locals kids who were hammered. Could not recommend this pub to anyone looking to enjoy a quiet pint and something to eat - probably okay in the week but won't be going there on a saturday afternoon again!

This is by way of an update. I've been back to the Volunteer on a number of occasions over the spring and summer. I have to say that the pub has really raised its game.

There are always two guest ales on tap, which are always in excellent condition. The bar has been moved, creating far more room in the lounge. The last time I went, there was Prestonpans 80/- and Deuchars IPA. Both were a joy to imbibe. The staff have been unfailingly polite and good humoured, despite frequently being rushed due to the increasing popularity of this fab hostelry. All in all, a very well done to all at the Volunteer Arms.
