user reviews of Ancient Unicorn, Barnard Castle

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Stayed here for two nights due to attending a wedding. Theakstons Black Bull, Richmond Station Ale and Everards Equinox which all seemed to be in reasonable condition. One bar split into two with a pool tabe one side and tables the other. Set out like a restaurant but plenty of room to sit at the bar. Food was excellent, unbelievable choice. You're not likely to find this place by accident unless you are walking the Pennine Way but worth staying here if you get the chance.

The Ancient Unicorn is a great traditional, old coaching inn, with low-beamed ceilings and roaring open fires. Landlady Joanne and bar manager Les are cheery hosts, and Les looks after the cask ale with great care and attention. Home-cooked food is excellent, and if you want a stop-over in the wilds of the North Pennines, the accommodation is very nicely presented and good value. It's well used by travellers on the A66 and lovers of walking and cycling.

Nice historic local type of pub, was a coaching inn . Jennings beers- average, a couple of guests. Should concentrate more on steak and chips menu, south african chef anyone !! in Bowes, of all places. Recommended, for history of place and laid back setting,if in the dale.

The`Unicorn is a place of warm welcome and decent beers in this windswept pennine village. They have made a play for the gastro crowd even by hiring a chef from South Africa ! Not so sure about that, but a unique establishment and a top landlord in Tony.
