Sought refuge here from a sweltering sun one afternoon in the summer. Nicely decorated pub (looked box-fresh) with cool mint wooden panelling on the walls, one of which bore a giant picture of the eponymous seafarer. Driving later so only had one pint, opting for Greene King Mild, which was perfectly drinkable. Menu looked appetising so we stayed for lunch. Glad we did; my smoked mackerel was succulent and my wife loved her pasta dish. We were sorry to leave without having another couple of beers in a calm, soothing atmosphere. Young staff were very polite and extremely pleasant. Will definitely return when next in the area.

The wife and I once made a slight detour to St Ives for a spot of lunch on our way to holidaying in Norfolk.
The pub was not that easy to find - I counted at least nine for what is a relatively small town, and at one stage we found ourselves in a dead end having driven down through the market on market day !
Anyway - what a great pub. Really spacious and perfect for bar billiards. After a delicious jacket potato with prawn filler, and armed with glasses of cider, we had a game on the table, a well-maintained Jelkes. Very fast on the break, a shade downhill. But otherwise very 'true' and the balls easy to get back.
Amusing sign on the wall in front of the table "POACHERS WILL BE SHOT" - also an amusing framed photograph of four women each nursing a pig.

a busy pub but a nice pint and a nice walled garden in summer
