We arrived at this pub and asked if they had a table for five. We were told buy the manager that there would be a half our wait which was fine. After half an hour there was a free table, but this was not cleaned / set for a further 30 minutes which was a little annoying. After being shown to this table an hour after arrival we ordered our meal. We ordered 1 Mezze Meditteranian to share starter and 5 main courses. The Starter was fine and so was the main coursepizza, however the other 4 main courses were dreadful. 2 x Chorizo linguine @ 11.95 each were so full of chile that they were barely edible. After picking out between 2 or 3 chilies we could manage to eat some although still very hot even though chile was only mentioned as an ingredient. we had 1 Orzo risotto which was extremely sickly and 1 pasta dish with goat's cheese which was inedible. When we complained, we were toldthat that's how they cook their dishes, the risotto is made from pasta and we were offered a free drink. as we had been there for 3 1/2 hours we declined. we did not see the manager or receive an apology.

I feel compelled to write a review, based on what I can!

Thought I would go for a nice lunch at what appeared to be a nice pub on a Monday afternoon. Arrived with my brother & 2 year old daughter - oh dear...

Was greeted at the door - 'what a service!' , so I thought...

'You can't bring kids in here' said the woman who greeted us. Ok, our mistake - hadn't checked the venue in advance, but have never come across a 'no children' pub before.

'Ok, no problem' I replied - not being that hungry, just looking for a nice place to catch up. It wasn't an issue, well, at least I didn't believe it was...

'There is a sign you know, you should have seen it on the way in' was the sharp response.

Ok, if a pub doesn't want to allow children, that's fine - I have no issue with it at all, had no inclination to make an issue of it - but for the incorrect assumption to be made that I would & for the woman who greeted us to bring the defences up & be so abrupt I thought was completely out of order.

I work in the service industry & absolutely detest bad service. There's simply no need to make a relatively harmless situation worse with an unreasonable attitude & response.

For that fact alone, I would not recommend this pub. Service is key & I am confident in saying that you would not find it here.

Welcoming - NO! INFURIATING - ABSOLUTELY! Service - appauling!

The Old Cottage is a nice pub in the Thornhill / Lisvane are of cardiff. Good fast service and a wide selection of drinks, It is a nice place to go for a drink and they serve some great food. I had a mixed Grill on a recent visit and it was lovely. Vicki had a really nice looking curry. certainly well worth eating here again
They stop serving food at 2100 though so make sure you get there before that.

I visited this place on Sat 15th September with my wife.

It was quite busy on arrival, only the landlady and one other serving drinks - I thought this is going to take a while...

However, the two of them worked tirelessly all night and waiting for a drink didnt take long.

Scampi was off the menu, so too was the garnish with the steak. We changed our order - my wife ordered the burger and I had the curry. We were warned when we ordered the meal that the kitchen was busy and there might be a longer wait than usual.

Food arrived about 50mins later, which was fine because we had been told to expect this.

Both meals were excellent no nan bread with mine but I got chips instead!

Overall, a very satisfying night out. Good value for money.

Never before have I ever been compelled to share a dining experience with the world and his dog before now.....after a very busy week, last Friday my husband and I walked to the Old Cottage to have a bite to eat and a glass of wine in the plesant pub garden.

At the bar, which was very busy, we were approached by a man more engrosed in his recently received text than his job! He hardly looked up to ask what we would like to drink!!!!
We ordered wine and food, after a while the food was delivered or rather dumped onto the table by the same man at the bar with whom we placed the order and I was faced with the most dried up unappetising grilled cod, new potatoes and limp warm green salad!

I asked if I could have some sauce with this, meaning of a creamed variety and I was told no, I could have tomato or tartare! Then I was offered the choice of another meal - which of course I jumped at!

My plate was taken a few feet away and the food was shaken off it into the bin just to the side of our table! He then sat down at the table and waited for my new choice - no pressure " i have plenty of time" he said!!!!!

I then chose the haddock from the menu - "we don't have haddock"
...then I chose the salad with the goats cheese "no we don't have goats cheese".......then I chose the chicken and rice which luckily they did have available!!

My second meal arrived with a big finger prod in the rice but at that time, I had had a couple of glasses of wine, was starving hungry and didn't want any more embarrassment!

This whole ordeal was unbeleivable and I cannot see how this guy still has a job - or doesn't he care???? He was the duty manager on that night!!!! Perhaps the original text he was reading was one giving him notice???!!!

I am sorry to say this local pub has gone downhill beyond belief which is a crying shame, with not allowing kids in, poor staff and poor food - I think we will be giving it a miss for now!
