Hadn't been here for some time, but was intrigued on hearing about the refit (thinking "if it aint broke, don't try to fix it"). It is, quite simply, an excellent place, with very good (local) food and very good drink (mostly Butcombe). This is certainly as good as it was, probably better. Very friendly, too. 8/10

Been recently taken over by a new regime who used to keep the Dolphin in Gillingham and in conjunction with the owners The National Trust, have spruced the place up a bit and undertaken some pretty serious repair. A new and interesting menu has appeared and the range of ale and cider is said to expand beyond the Butcombe and Cheddar Valley monopoly. Really friendly and talkative couple who let myself and a friend in for a drink, about half an hour after they shut the pub for the afternoon! Great for a drink or some food and infinity more interesting than the near by Trust owned Spread Eagle, which is perennially infested with geriatric diners.

Called in last Saturday evening. Proper pub, excellent pint of Cheddar Valley cider, ( my better half was driving!!) Both fires roaring, perfect.

Visited on a monday lunch. Fairly busy, good crowd of locals and friendly atmosphere. Had couple of pints of Butts - excellent condition and reasonably priced. Good old fashioned pub, civilised erudite landlord - well worth a visit !

Thoroughly endorse previous reviews. Great drinking pub with very well kept cask ales and friendly landlord
