It's been quite a few years since I was last in the John Gilbert and I recently had the chance to pay a visit while out and about. On entering the pub the first thing you notice is how bright and sparkly the décor is, which has obviously changed since my last visit.

At the bar there are 10 pumps, at the time of my visit 1 was off (clip turned round) and a further 3 were clipped but marked as "coming soon".

Of the remaining pumps, on offer was Fox Glove by Slightly Foxed, 4.3% at £3.20 for the pint (which is the one I went for), one other which I had not heard of before, one by Moorehouse's (can't remember which), Green King IPA, and other nationally available ales. The "coming soon" ales looked like ones I had not seen before. I found the Fox Glove a bit odd buy pleasant enough and certainly drinkable. I wouldn't go out of my way to have it again but would go back to the pub with no problem - very decent for a Greene King pub! Nice outdoor area too.

Special day ruined! Avoid at all cost!
Around the end of November we booked a christening reception for 8th February at the John Gilbert pub. We arranged we would be having a buffet and we would have exclusive use of the raised area in the pub as it was a nice sized space for the number of people we were expecting and it gave us an element of privacy. The lady (I think she was called Becky) who dealt with us at the time took our details and wrote everything down. She told us not to worry about paying a deposit at the time and just pop in a week or so before the 8th of February to confirm our final numbers and our buffet choices, the pay a deposit.
We decided to go and sort it a bit earlier on 7th January we went to pay for the buffet and confirm the details. The same lady who made our booking originally dealt with us again. As it turned out our party had been moved to different part of the pub that was far less suitable. All we were told was that the area we agreed on is now taken by someone else who already paid! NOT EVEN AN APPOLOGY. I cannot understand why anyone would do this!? As it was clear to see in their diary the party that has taken priority over us is no larger in numbers there seems no financial gain to the pub or even just a matter of fitting more people in better.
We never received any phone call or other form of contact to question our intent of going ahead with the booking or to inform us of the change to the agreed arrangements. Imagine if we hadn’t of come in until 1st of February as advised!? Now due to the total unprofessionalism of the pub we have to find a new venue, have the already printed invitations reprinted and all our potential guests will be getting extremely short notice! This is without doubt the most disgraceful example of poor customer service and truly mighty feat to ruin such a special and important day for our daughter before it has even happened!

I was in there last night, a Tuesday.

I thought the namesake beer was drinkable enough, and the food edible and competitively priced.

The clientele seemed a bit rough here and there, but it's quite a big place so to be expected.

The old building's been refitted inside and not that sympathetically. You'd think it was an inner city lager hall really.

The young male staff seemed as you'd expect NMWers to be: don't know if they were.

We visited the John Gilbert in Worsley over the first bank holiday weekend in May 2012 and I feel I must tell all about our experience.

When we orded our first round of drinks at the bar I found the young barman to be abrupt but put this down to his young age, it was the manager that was something else!

On ordering the second round of drinks at the bar I payed the Manager with cash and he then proceeded arrograntly to flick MY CHANGE in the tip jar behind the bar without asking, infact he didn't even look at me and then turned his back and spoke to the young barman.

I have never been so discussed in all my life I was fuming!

I didn't complain to him as we were waiting for our meals and you never know.

The food was also poor really being served luke warm and coming in spurts and the waitress who had to be called everytime we wanted service, I say service but it was poor and without a smile miserable infact, her opening line was "what do you want"

Searching the internet it seems we were not alone with our bad experience.

With fifty pubs a week closing maybe the staff at the John Gilbert prefer to join the 2 million+ unemployed.

Anyway Peeps spend your money elsewhere.

Very smart and comfy. In about 6 visits over the last few months I have always had good service and excellent food. No the cheapest place in the world, but you pay for quality and if thats what you want, its here. Minor gripe that the cask ale seemed a little indifferent, could do with a little more choice.
