A Turkish restaurant has replaced this former Wetherspoons.

NOW CLOSED!!

Haven't been this way for a while, but amazed to find the place boarded up.

Have to agree with other posters on here this is an above average JDW.
In here early last Saturday morning and quite busy but service was fine.
Guest ales were from £1.99 a pint.

A very decent 'spoons in my opinion.

Came in here after the Wat Tyler and found the place to be much better, brighter and a bit more cheerful, though the Wat Tyler was friendly.

A couple of decent guest ales on and the pint from the Kent Brewery I had was very good.

Very busy on a Tuesday night but the place has a nice feel and is one of the better 'spoons I have visited recently.

Staff were quick and attentive, tables were clean and the beer was good.

Wife and I have started frequenting this Wetherspoons as the other one in Dartford (Flying Boat) started going downhill after a few months of opening. Staff in the Paper Moon are friendly and service is always quick. Cannot fault the 'curry and pint' for 4.59 on a Thursday night!!

Out of the 2 wetherspoons in Dartford this would always be my second choice. It is just not as clean looking and fresh as the newly opened Flying boat although the staff were friendly and the food is always of a good standard.

Nice little pub with a good selection of ales.

Biggest drawback though is the toilets are upstairs and the place is very draughty. I had to move twice to try to get out of the draught but to no avail.

Since the Flying Boat opened down the road 6 months ago, I assumed that the Paper Moon would be firmly relegated to Dartfords No 2 Spoons (a disparaging title if ever there was one) however over the recent months I have found myself using it far more now than I ever did in the past

A minor refurbishment has given it a fresher feel although it still has that unmistakable Spoons stamp of uniformity about it. Despite being a former Bank, it doesnt have any of the opulent touches normally prevalent in such buildings and there is little to make it stand out although one interesting fact about the place is that it was designed by Sir Edward Maufe who later built Guildford Cathedral.

The main reason it is currently preferred over the FB is that it has a far superior approach to its ales. Where the FB will often have 1 or, if youre lucky, 2 guest ales (rarely more apart from the Festival), the PM regularly has a minimum of 3 and sometimes 4 or 5 although it has to be said, the available soon clips can sometimes be frustrating. A recent tie-up with the local Nelson Brewery in Chatham has led to regular Nelsons beers among the usual guests, an excellent recent Brewery trip and a forthcoming Ale that has been specially brewed for the pub (which I believe will also be available in the FB).

The customer base doesnt seem as unappealing as it has in the past although there are still a few annoying people to be found at certain times (this is, after all, a Wetherspoons so it goes with the territory). I would concur that service can be frustrating at times but the team are at least friendly and chatty once you have their attention. If the FB can improve on its ale record, the town could potentially have one of the best brace of Spoons pubs around and from my recent experiences, the much improved PM is far from being the poor relation to the FB that I initially expected.

One of the more pub-like 'spoons (if you see what I mean), with a fairly traditional interior layout rather the wide opne spaces of many town-centre conversions. Decent selection of real ale festival beers at a very reasonable 1.69. Plenty of staff about, but they all seemed to be engaged in things other than serving customers which was very annoying.

Following a disappointing visit to the newly opened 'Flying Boat' I approached my visit to this pub with a little trepidation. I hadn't been in here for at least 4 years and that was not a very exciting experience.

Much to my surprise there were 4 'guest' ales on all of which were worth drinking. The duty manager was definitely on the ball and the service, both food and drink, was good.

A smallish Wetherspoon pub with a good cross section of drinkers. The only complaint was the toilets, which as usual, were up 3 flights of stairs which got progressively narrower as you ascended.

I enjoyed my visit and would definitely visit again when in the area.

I think I've been lucky on my visits to this place. Whilst I kind of agree with most of the comments, I genuinely don't think it's one of the worst Wetherspoons around. I used to live in Bexleyheath and the Spoons up there was awful. Seriously, spend a couple of nights at The Wrong 'Un and The Paper Moon will seem like luxury in comparison.

I'll admit - if you've picked the wrong place at the bar then you can wait all night to be served in this place and yes, it always has its fair share of losers dotted around. But there always seems to be enough "normal" people in here to balance that out. And as for the comments about students - I'll take them any day over the 15 year old chavs that drink at the Bexleyheath Wetherspoons.
keepthechange - 1 Apr 2009 16:35
Yes, I agree. One of the poorer ones. These days, at least. It wasn't always like that. I appreciate the economics of cheap prices, and usually I'm prepared to accept them, but certainly standard of the food, and also the quality of the beer, has dropped considerably.

I'm going elsewhere for the time being.
pub_aficianado - 9 Feb 2009 04:52
Probably one of the poorer Wetherspoons in existence.

Cheap beer, fairly awful but cheap food and the usual Wetherspoons mock historic interior make it accessible and convienient as they all are.

The problem with this Wetherspoons is that they seem to let in and serve pretty much anyone. As far as I am aware, they have rules and regulations which say about warning loud groups which swear at the top of their voices etc. but it's rife in here and no-one seems to do very much about anything.

The staff are generally impolite, unfriendly and always look like they are on the tense, on the defensive and about to explode at any moment which makes standing at the bar an unpleasant experience.

At the weekend, it is impossible to get a seat, get served or eat anything as it is full of prefuelling clubbers taking advantage of cheap beer, which is all Wetherspoons is good for in all honesty if you don't mind selling your soul.

Overall, not a nice, friendly or welcoming pub but very convienient and cheap as all Wetherspoons are. One to generally avoid unless you are particulary hard up.

gave this place a try saturday night, ales were great and the atmosphere was nice for a spoons pub, unfortunatly the food was woeful, my wife asked for steak medium rare wich came back cremated, and my lasagne looked like it had been micro waved strait from a crushed up comtainer the salad was limp, and the chips were rank, which is a shame as I've had some desent meals in some of the jdw's of late and this one looked promising, with decent mix of clientel, we had planned on bringing a large family gathering here after a planned panto outing over the xmas period but i doubt it now
vinnnie - 19 Nov 2008 12:27
the place is full of skint chavs and students out to get pissed.

bowmore - 11 Sep 2008 11:26
I can't really fault the pub apart from having to be Lynford Christie if you're taken short and sometimes you appear invisable to the bar staff. The real ales are great and a good selection to choose from. We were in there watching the UEFA cup final but the telly's kept going off so get the leccy sorted! All in all i had a cracking 7 weeks in there and will drink there next time i'm working in Dartford.
beddy101 - 12 Jun 2008 22:39
I like this pub and have been there a couple of dozen or so times and never had a bad experience. It is mostly my default starting venue when I go into Dartford. The beer is Wethers-cheap and so is the food. Staff are friendly enough (though it can seem under-staffed at times) and while Jamie Oliver would probably sneer at the menu, for the money you cannot complain. The last roast I had there (pork - new to the menu) was excellent though the carrots were a bit overdone - as usual !
It has a central location (being an ex high st bank) nice relaxed atmosphere, a couple of non-intrusive screens that show Sky News and is generally well patronized by young, old and ermedium alike. The smoking ban has done this place a lot of favours - it seems cleaner and less chavvy and overall has a good atmosphere in my opinion
They have recently added Friends style comfy sofas which are a welcome addition.. There are other different types of seating too so you can find a cosy corner to chat with your girlfriend or a big table to chill with your mates.
A good place no complaints at all (except for those carrots.)

I'd love to trash this pub, really I would. In many ways I should trash this pub. It's dirty, the majority of the clientele are idiots and it's generally impossible to get served on a Friday night.

But I love The Moon. I started going when I was 16 (which tells you something about this place) and it was my local from then until I left Dirtford. I still stop by every now and then for a drink. In the many years I've been drinking there various friends of mine have been behind the bar (one recently started!), I've struck up a good joking relationship with at leaast 3 of the managers (who change once every year-and-a-half) andd, to be perfectly honest, it is one of the least offensive drinking venues in Dirtford, again not saying too much.

Is it a dive? Certainly. But its also damn near a religion for those of us damned enough to go there for our Friday nights out.
marcus40mast - 2 May 2007 16:01
Spoons pubs = cheap beers, barely edible food, useless barstaff with PHd's in ignoring the paying punter, general filth and untidyiness.

Not the worst Spoon's pub i've ever been into; the Edmund Halley in Lee and the Lord Moon in the Mall in Whitehall are worse than this place, though thats nothing to scream about.

If you understand that the cheapest price isn't automatically the one which represents the best value, it's likely you won't waste any time with this dive.
anonymous - 13 Sep 2006 09:11
To me, all Wetherspoons are the similar. They're all cheap and they're all lacking in atmosphere, but all offer half decent grub at an affordable price. This 'Spoons is no exception, yet it's probably one of the scruffiest and filthiest ones I've been in.
HTM69 - 26 May 2006 22:08
My favourite Wetherspoons pub, probably because it's in the town of my birth (and I still remember when it was a Lloyd's) and every time I go in there now it means I see my dad or my brother. I have got plastered here so many times, always in the daytime funnily enough, as I am always on my way to the station. Pretty good food and service, as JD's go. The toilets are a three mile trek up a tiny stair case with no real passing places, so wait until you're breaking your neck then run like hell! The usual cheap booze etc, no one on here needs telling what JD's sell!
kutiepie6662003 - 18 Feb 2006 00:52
A typical Wetherspoons situated in the old Lloyds Bank building offering an excellent and cheap selection of Real Ales and unusual bottled beers amongst the usual fizz. On the whole it is difficult knock Wetherspoons and the Paper Moon is a typical example with the standard decor and old prints of the town. Unfortunately the pub is directly opposite a barracuda pub that also offers discounted (but much worse) beer so this area does tend to attract the lower end of the market, ie the 18 year olds who go for the cheap booze rather than the mature drinker who actually knows and understands what he is drinking (and knows when to stop).
RogerB - 26 Oct 2005 18:51
Cheap but not cheerful. Typical Wetherspoons pub. Full of old gits and students. A shit-hole.
Hammered - 26 Dec 2004 20:03
