I'd read that this pub was closed and was about to be replaced with a supermarket. But remarkably, there was no Sainsburys - just a large pub. I believe this used to be a Wetherspoons. But luckily somebody else has taken it over and kept it as a pub. The interior is just what you'd expect, now that I've told you it was a 'spoons. But the atmosphere feels worse, because it was pretty much empty. The crooner at the far end belting out Bryan Adams "classics" probably helped matters slightly. The sole lady dancing to this in the middle of the pub made me chuckle. The many handpulls are still there. But only Old Speckled Hen and Courage Best were on. Nevertheless, the pub was cleaner than your average Wetherspoon and at least it's still open as a pub.

It now has Fever karaoke on every other Friday. They are top notch, though I would not say the same about the pub.

Sadly this pub has not learnt any previous lessons .The lager still remains flat as a pancake just like its customers lifeless .The pub in general is poorly run and like thier glasses dirty to say the least. Overall very very poor, maybe its time to either call it a day or get a proper publican to run it

Quick, friendly service and a very nice pint of Old Speckled Hen too. Even the amateur musicians were good! Overall very civilised on my Friday night visit.

the windmill used to be a good pub.untill a recent visit .the bitters were to say the least poor.as for the service .only one bar person seemed to be working, whilst the others including the manager sitting around reading books/mags talking to their friends most of the evening.hardly the best example to give to your staff,or customers.i recommend you give this pub a miss unless of course you have alot of patience.

H (below) has called it right - this is an unexpected gem. Bar staff happy and joking, regulars friendly, GK IPA exceptional - you wouldn't believe this was ex-Spoons. Never going to get the serious real ale crowd, but a gem all the same.

Used to be my local 2002-2005 and still pop in when I visit London. Bar staff always helpful and seem happy in their work. Beers always crystal clear and nicely cool, but not chilled too much. Never had a bad pint of bitter in there. Can't say the same for the many new gastro pubs in the SE23/SE22/SE15 area who usually sell bitter, but don't keep it well. They renewed the tired upholstery in 2005 and looking a bit better now, even if the pattern is a bit loud for my taste. Lots of old boys supping ale all afternoon watching Countdown, but the bar staff won't need asking twice to turn it down as drives then nuts too. If you catch the 176, 187 or 122 it will drop you precisely outside the door. Just 4 steps and you are inside :-)

Food its traditional tasty English grub that leaves me well satisfied. The most expensive on the menu is the 8oz steak at 6. Highly refreshing compared to the upmarket gastro pub prices, where you cannot get soup of under a fiver. There is a food/restaurant area towards the back of the pub and perfect for families and children ok till six. Decked area out the back ok for a breath of air, but not a place I stay for long. Its tidy and well maintained, but prefer inside.Toilets clean and to high standard too.

Beer dirty - was poured a pint of Theaksons from an unmarked pump and it was filth. Had to refuse it even though the manager served it and didn't check! Worst excuse ever - it was only racked and tapped last night!!!! - This is not the way to look after real ale and is a disgrace to the trade.

Alternative pint was pretty poor too.

Food was slightly worse than abysmal and the atmosphere was missing presumed killed in last weeks fight.

Don't just give it a miss - cross over the road to walk past it!!

The best-kept real ale in the Sydenham/Forest Hill/Crystal Palace area.

Since it lost its wetherspoons status this pub has got better and better. Excellent beer - Ridley's Rumpus at 1.65!!!!! It's superb! Food also quick and good. Not the greatest atmosphere in the world but for a quick couple of scoops it's hard to beat!!!
