user reviews of the Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very friendly welcome when I entered and one of the two other drinkers was friendly enough, the other customer was a miserable arrogant old snob
My overall impression was both the barman and pub could do with a brush up but is a nice local which deserves to be used more by the locals, most of the pubs in Sunbury have gone and it would be a shame to lose this one.
A smarter dress code instead of a just got out of bed one from the staff and a bit of elbow grease on the walls and this will be a gem

Have been lucky enough to visit this Pub a number of times in the last few months, while visiting friends.
London Pride and Doom Bar seem to be on all the time, and are always in tip top condition, and accordingly delicious.
As has been previously noted, the carpet is not in the best of shape. Personally I couldn't care less. The only part of me that comes into contact with the carpet, are the soles of my shoes and they are not at all fussy. Unfortunately new carpets, posh furniture etc. will encourage the 'suits' and another lovely pub will be lost to it's locals.
Looking forward to my next visit in March.

The Grey Horse is a far cry from the other pubs we visited in Lower Sunbury on Saturday. I was here for a function. It's a typical locals' boozer, most likely with a loyal clientele. The small bar is well worn. Carpets could certainly do with replacing. But there is a large outdoor area with a garden at the rear. Pride & Doom Bar were the real ales.
blue_scrumpy - 26 Jun 2017 19:07
Things must have changed since the last review.
Went with my partner and was not happy. Staff were rude when they could be bothered to serve anyone they didn't know personally. One of those locals meant for locals.
The beer was not good but I was willing to try another until my partner returned from the toilets and said there was no way she would stay there. I visited the blokes loo and saw her point, pretty rough.
Wont be adding to my crawl list.

Great little pub. Only small, but has a great selection of beers and ciders which seem to vary every now and then which is nice.
Apparently it's the Landlord's mother who does the food, and it really is true home cooked food. Large portions for a decent price - hard to get these days!
The locals are really friendly and made us welcome.
It might not look much but a pleasant evening can be had by all.
A30 - 13 May 2013 21:32
This old pub on the original bit of road before the railway serves real homemade food, mains £5.95 which is great value considering the ma size portions. The ales are well kept albeit invariably the London Pride/Doom Bar duo so commonly seen these days. Friendly locals and regs make you welcome without hassling. Would be good if the beer varied occassionally.
mim - 20 Jan 2013 20:24
Popped in with a couple of Camra mates, and as per last visit, basic decor, but great beer (had Twickenham original and London pride) at a reasonable price for area of 3.10.
spikefromsurrey - 4 Jun 2012 18:11
Confirm everything said in previous post, excellent beer at a great price for this area, and friendly 'locals' pub with darts etc. Will never win any design awards, but there are enough of those sorts of pubs these days.
spikefromsurrey - 6 Feb 2012 20:56
This is a smashing little pub close to Sunbury Cross on the road to Kempton Park
Beware if traveling by road as it is slightly hidden from the main road.
Just take the first lurn left over the railway bridge.
Just one bar with 3 hand pulls London Pride & Sharps Doombar were on along
with Twickenham Original which I had for a bargin 2.50 a pint.
There were about half a dozen other punters in when I visited last Saturday all
watching the Liverpool v Man u game on one of the two large TV's they have.
bjbrummiejohn - 17 Oct 2011 07:28
Thanks to you, Zappa, we popped in to the Grey Horse again, last Friday (13th !) as we were in the area (see my review Jan 2009 and Zappa's reply). Atmosphere was buzzing, and clientelle friendly. Superbly kept Twickenham Original, and Sharps Doombar. Service with a smile from the barmaid with the dark hair and red T-shirt. She made me feel quite at home. Thank you. Lovely pub. We will return.
FrankDS - 16 May 2011 13:49
It has now become a lazy habit for us to visit this pub around mid-week for an evening meal and a pint. They usually have a choice of two meals which are home cooked and generous for just 5.95. Always a friendly crowd of locals and a pub you can hold a conversation in, although there is a often keen football following (albeit civilised) at the TV end of the horseshoe shaped bar.
mim - 8 Mar 2011 21:00
always seem to be too drunk by the time I get to this pub, so have never enjoyed a proper evening here. However, seems a real proper pub, always busy and a good atmosphere
TheGP - 26 Dec 2010 19:39
Popped in for a pint on a cold winters evening, and appreciated warm welcome and warm open fire. Free mince pie and decent pint of Twickenham Original very nice. Loos are a bit basic, but looks like refurbishment in progress. Very handy for nearby Kempton Park Race Course, which thanks to it's all weather track was staging racing even whilst 'snow lay all around'. If you like good beer this pub is worth a visit.
spikefromsurrey - 22 Dec 2010 09:51
Lovely tucked away little pub with character and a friendly local regular following. Needs a bit of a tidy up but without spoiling its rickety (not quite rustic) personality. Ales are very reasonable at 2.70/pint when nearly everywhere else now is over 3/pint (except Wetherspoons of course).
mim - 5 Jun 2010 21:35
Great beer and ale selection but the pub needs an bit of an investment in their seating... the most uncomfortable pub sofa lives here!
bishopgrog - 9 Apr 2010 21:47
Decent little pub, friendly locals and friendly staff. Beer is quite pricey. Only negatives really are the toilets which desperatly need sorting out, and the garden which is a bit of a mess, but overall a nice pub.
justaquickpint - 21 Jan 2010 16:59
Twickenham,spitfire & smiths beers
anonymous - 4 Dec 2009 13:58
went in here for the first time in years and was surprisingly busy

i feel like I should return for a longer visit, seemed allright
TheGP - 19 Nov 2009 16:36
Just given the Grey a rating of 10. Must admit the owners`are friends, but as I virtually live here they must be doing something right, eh?
pale_rider - 31 Aug 2009 16:48
As a Friday night regular, I can only apologise to FrankDS for any apparent rudeness! I'm sure none was intended. As I recall, it was brass monkeys then, so whoever left a coat lying around was probably too cold to notice their behaviour. There is a nwe heating system (and new kitchen and other improvements..thanks to new landlords). Do come back Frank...
zappa - 11 Mar 2009 15:27
Great pub with very friendly staff and landlord. Visited last Friday evening, for the first time, to find the place busy but not packed. Disappointed to see that many of the tables & chairs were unoccupied but had jackets /coats placed on them, forcing us to sit at a draughty dark corner. During our stay, those chairs were still not occupied, so it was a lack of thought on behalf of the local clientelle.
Twickenham ales were not available that evening, because of a problem with the barrel, according to the barman. There was however a lovely pint of Shepherd Neame Spitfire. Pride was also available.
I can't praise the staff enough for their courtesy and efficiency.
FrankDS - 22 Jan 2009 10:53
Great little pub on a side street that can easily be missed.Bar staff friendly & welcoming.
anonymous - 2 Dec 2008 15:37
Good quality twickenham original. Good service and big beer garden.
garyrealaledrinker - 23 Sep 2008 17:12
Went to this pub for the first time in my life.

Nearly drove past it but quickly spotted it. Nice and friendly inside, nice drinks, nice atmosphere. Did not eat but I am sure the food is nice. Lovely beer garden and some good music.

Notice: never reverse into the driveways along side the pub, some nutter came out and scared the living lights out of me. lord o lord.

Apologies for reversing in your drive, lesson learnt

Will definetly return to the pub!
tolworthboy - 31 May 2008 17:41
The 'Grey Horse' certainly is the dark horse of Sunbury, tucked away behind a raised section of road bridge(to Sunbury-X), hundreds of drivers probably drive right passed it every day, not knowing it's there...! I can recommend the 'Twickenham' ale, and then you can always fall back onto ye ol' 'London Pride', or the floor, which ever comes the sooner..!! We like the GH, its quiet often, peaceful, comfortable, and sometimes 4/5ths empty, but never boring.
Boat club meeting again in 2 Thursdays then, ok..?! TJ
TeeJay - 30 Apr 2008 12:22
One of the better pubs I experienced on my recent travels. Always welcome, and always a decent pint - the Twickenham (Original & ScrumDown) were spot-on. I've heard many comments about the landlord, but he was never anything other than pleasant and courteous - you can do a lot worse in Lower Sunbury.
MarkWJ - 29 Mar 2008 22:05
Friday night after work, better crowd and the Scrum Down (fresh cask!) very good. Neil chatty and friendly and nice atmosphere - must remember not to go in on Saturday then.
dougscott - 18 Feb 2008 11:35
I've defended this pub in the past, but have to say if strangers got the treatment I did on Saturday afternoon, it may account for some of the comments. Whilst the Twickenham was in excellent form, some of the customers were plain ignorant; one sarcastically thanked me for coming and wished me a good trip - presumably because I was carrying a small rucksack. As I live just around the corner I explained that my trip would not be that long. I don't think he was being friendly given his tone. MillHouse I know you are in more regularly than me, but I'm not exactly a stranger.
dougscott - 24 Jan 2008 17:16
I just go in because of the choice and quality of beers. I don't know what it was like before or who ran it or any of the people who went there, who oddly don't want to give their names! There is thankfully a lot of choice in Sunbury now and plenty of pubs that sell good beer.
dougscott - 9 Nov 2007 18:45
I am sorry but have to disagree with a lot of the previous reviews. Knew this pub from my youth and was a solid regular when Tony & Ingrid owned it and Dave and Rosemary before them. How far can a pub go down hill like this is amazing. The new landlord drinks more than most of his clients put together, moody, arrogant and unwelcoming.

Such a shame as was indeed one of the best. Lots of the old regulars have gone away to other places now, try the Hare & Hounds, Jubilee and White Horse to see the old faces. The new guy has a permanent frown on his face and the most discourteous landlord I have met.

Lets hope one day the right people take it over and bring it back to what it was.
anonymous - 1 Nov 2007 10:58
Nice to see Autumn Blaze on, but miss the Summer Gold as now I start to think of dark foggy nights. Original as good as ever.
dougscott - 20 Sep 2007 17:36
Visited one saturday as was passing and heard live music. What a night, the band (Cerveza) were fantastic and the beers were great. Check this place out next time they're rockin'!!!
SexGod - 26 Jun 2007 22:44
Nice pub, no food though - good beer
scrumpet - 7 Jun 2007 13:01
Hi CANADASON, glad to see you got home safe, you didn't win the footie (missed out by 1 point!) or National sweep. Glad you enjoyed our local, we all hope to see you again. Neil sends his regards and says that if you want he will e-mail you the footie comp sheets next season - contact him on 01932 782981, don't tell him this but Charlton are doomed - away to your lot last game of the season "!!! lol
PaulB66 - 19 Apr 2007 12:42
FANTASTIC!! The Perfect Pub for good drink and good company!! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent in the place. The hospitality was unprecedented, and the atmosphere was great. Quiet and quaint at times, but also fun and exciting in the evenings. All the Lads, including the owner Neil were fantastic hosts and spokesmen for the joint and I can't wait to visit them again!! Hope to be back soon!! And if you're reading this, go to the Grey Horse!! Hail to Charlton Athletics!!
canadason - 18 Apr 2007 15:22
A blink-and-you'll-miss-it local, with a couple of nice Twickenham beers on sale in very good nick.

Service with a smile from the ladies behind the bar.

Main drawback was me not being too keen on the interior, didn't really fancy settling in for a session, but definately worth 30 minutes with a pint of Twickers.
Quinno - 15 Apr 2007 16:22
No worries, they always have a top St Georges day do, the new landlord insists on it as they push the boat out on St Patricks day as well.
PaulB66 - 5 Jan 2007 22:18
Does anyone know if this pub or any other pub in Sunbury is doing anything for St George's day this year (APR 23rd)?? Planning a bit of a crawl...........well these things have to be done dont they!!!
lucy75 - 5 Jan 2007 20:07
One of my favourite pubs of all time and holds fond memories. I used to drink here when I worked in Sunbury and it was great then . Tony and Ingrid were fantastic and its a pity they've movd on but nothing stands still and the new guy seems to be OK. Still has the atmosphere, beer and service of what a real pub should be. Made a point of dropping in every time I'm going that way. I wish more pubs were like this, please don't spoilt it.
ANOther - 11 Dec 2006 12:39
I like this pub - cosy. Beers good in here as well. Always full of plod as it is next door to the cop shop.
TheGP - 6 Dec 2006 19:12
A pleasantly cosy little locals pub. Low ceilings and slightly cramped, this is more like it. My pint of Twickenham Autumn Blaze was in excellent condition. Two other real ales were available. Amazing: a pub that has not yet been gastro-pubbed or turned into flats!
karloff - 15 Nov 2006 15:49
The new (3 years +) landlord is sometimes a pain, but that is ok when u look at the bers and company. Great pub,
zappa - 21 Oct 2006 00:32
Good beer and a large garden. Unfortunately a change of publican a couple of years ago has taken away the welcoming atmosphere that used to prevail.
local131 - 12 Oct 2006 00:48
The landlord has found some great new beers from a brewery Twickenham (Twickenham Fine Ales). Twickenham Original is a really decent bitter, but there are some new ones on sale now which are worth trying - Advantage and as seaonal beer called Autumn Gold. I'm sorry a previous reviewer found the pub cliquey, I guess it could seem like that, but its really only because there is a big regular crowd who know each other. Give it a bit longer next time..
zappa - 10 Oct 2006 12:46
One of my favourite pubs in Sunbury. Lovely large garden for the summer and cosy inside on the more chillier evenings. Landlord and bar staff are friendly and the ales are in good order. Stay out of the leather sofa otherwise you'll never want to get up unless you can find someone else to go to the bar for you.
lucy75 - 12 Sep 2006 20:39
Found this really clique - un welcoming barman too. Nice garden though.
anonymous - 23 Aug 2006 09:48
Must sneak 'Laid back Ron' into this pub one day soon, its brilliant (don't tell Jackie tho')! TJ
TeeJay - 1 Aug 2006 10:15
Couldn't help but return to the Grey Horse for a swift pint! Ventured outside the back to discover a beer garden big enough for 100 people..! Enjoyed the luvly July summer evening so much, stayed all night!! (Was that really the vicar at the bar, drinking London Pride..?) TJ
TeeJay - 26 Jul 2006 12:08
Nice little pub! Had a great St.Patrick's night here.. folks were singing & dancing! Someone did fall off a bar stool! (We had free nibbles and some 'shots' of a strange drink something like Baileys! But you couldn't have a whole pint of it)!!
Its right near the cop shop in Sunbury if you know it. A nice little "oasis" tucked away from the hussle & bussle & chaos that is Sunbury Cross 150yds away!
I'd go there more often, if I lived walking distance! TJ
TeeJay - 20 Jul 2006 12:31
TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK

I like this pub and the brunette barmaid is fit. So there.
TheGP - 22 Apr 2006 20:03
FOOD IS GOOD IF YOU GET THERE IN TIME. REGULARS ARE BRILLIANT AND MAKE UP FOR THE MOODY LANDLORD. NOT VISITED MANY TIMES AS PRICES ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. FEEL SORRY FOR THE BAR STAFF.
anonymous - 22 Jan 2005 15:09
A lovely little pub, missed by many (fortunately)due to its location. The regulars are great and not short of wit or comment.
anonymous - 20 Jan 2005 10:23
So the stools fall over a bit easily, who wants to sit down anyway?

Best pub in the area for the long haul, I don't use it just 'cos its my nearest - honest
anonymous - 14 Jan 2005 23:48
An Oasis in the heart of Sunbury, blink and you will miss it, I only discovered this pub after last years regatta, the enthusiasm of not only the Tug Of War team and their supporters on seeing the trophy delivered back to the 'Olde Battle Cruiser'

What a party that was, my wife and I having never previously visited the pub have now become regulars.

WHAT A GREAT FRIENDLY BUNCH THEY ARE
anonymous - 12 Jan 2005 21:16
odd place with a frendly crowd and lots of laughs mix of people nice wine beer looks good would take my mum there and reglars sya food is OK
tinyt - 12 Jan 2005 20:17
This pub serves fabulous food monday to friday 12 - 2pm. Has a friendly atmosphere and great bar staff.
The beer is kind of pricey but the food is very reasonable. Although it is situated next to a police station it is not a coppers pub as people assume.
anonymous - 11 Jan 2005 21:06
Ive been drinking in the Grey since I moved to the area about 10 years ago. It is on the endangered species list as a proper local, with a largely regular crowd. This (in which ever way you want to define regular) has a lot to do with the quality of the draft beer. The ambience is friendly and not as cliquey as it might appear to someone coming in the first time and seeing a crowd who all seem to know each other.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, you can drink cheaper elsewhere... but then you always can! There is no food in the evenings or weekends..although the week-day lunches are deservedly popular. They dont have Sky Sports or a pool table. But if you want an old fashioned pub with a community feel, I think its hard to beat in the area.

anonymous - 11 Jan 2005 19:12
Not the cheapest pub in Sunbury, but my favourite.
Really decent pint of Spitfire, a small pub with a nice bunch of locals, it has a fairly wide range of food at lunchtime and the food prices are very reasonable, the omelette I had was lovely.
PaulB66 - 10 Jan 2005 13:06
OK pub with tiny and rather uncomfortable chairs - not really a pub that you would want to stay in all night though.
mike2004 - 31 Aug 2004 14:04
Quite a nice pub, bit inconvenient to get to, but does a nice pint. Next to a cop shop though so is a PolicePub.
TheGP - 9 Aug 2004 14:34
