user reviews of the Lock Inn Cafe (Canal Side Cafe), Bradford on Avon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Its website advertises "Fun with Dick & Jane Since 1990" and promotes the breakfasts over anything else. If it is a pub then it's nothing special. Beers were from the St Austell stable - Bath Ales' Gem and St Austell Barracuda as well as Mena Dhu stout on font. I couldn't work out why they needed garish plastic tablecloths on the outside tables unless it's evidence of their "quirkiness". We had one drink here and moved on.

I pressed the wrong button so my comments are listed under The Masons Arms if you want to read them but I did like this little bar/cafe/restaurant by the canal.

They do a lovely boatmans breakfast and alcohol prices are competitive. Well worth a visit

Although the fact that it is quirky is fun it is way too grubby outside. Filthy tenting and no attempt to capitalise on the canal side location. The building is very overgrown and run down. Good food and drink though. Needs a make over and a spring clean and a general refresh!

Had another great breakfast here on Sunday. Again, would recommend to anyone visiting Bradford-on-Avon.

OMG what has happened. Crap food with an Iceland van delivering it and at night full of nasty older drunks and underaged theating teenagers. Very nasty place to be

Ate here for the third time recently. Always very busy (a good sign), and as a result we had to wait nearly an hour for our food. However, service was very friendly and staff were hard working and organised. Menu quite varied and extensive, and very reasonable prices with good sized portions. Pub is extremely quirky and doesn't follow rules of established chains. Canal side location and wide array of eating areas (open air, garden room, canal boat, marquee, and indoor area) only adds to the charm. Well worth the visit if you can cope with its lively nature and crowds.

I think this place it wonderful. In a time where the pub industry seem to think that what people want is a generic template, devoid of characture its great to find somewhere the total opposite. We live in London but regulary travel to Bradford to visit elderly relatives. This is a must stop place for us. Yes the staff tend to be on the young side (must be a great employer of young people in the town). And yes the menu is not ground breaking but we dont care. Its the fact that they make the effort. Its friendly, and funny and run by real people not some massive pub company. Have had some great breakfasts and wonderful homemade (yes it was) lasagna. Dog friendly, cat friendly, everybody friendly. Great location also. One day I would like to own my own place and will be stealing (sorry owners but it is the greatest form of flattery) some of the wonderfully quarky feel this place has. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the town, an unspoilt little gem.

Disgusting food very fatty and rushed, not the most appealing. Lovely location, some staff were pleasant other staff seemed a little wired... The prices are expensive for the meal or light bite you get, menu is different just ashame the chief does not seem that passionate about food anymore, I used to go regularly but can't say I'd now go back for food.

We (family of 2 adults & 2 children) visited this lovely pub on Monday night and what an absolute find. I really don't know what people are moaning about. We found this such a picturesque spot, lots of outdoor and indoor seating. We had planned to go to the Canal Tavern (opposite) but then spotted The Lock Inn. The pub was quite full when we arrived (about 8pm) and we were offered the opportunity to sit outside on the canal in their barge! Well, you can imagine this went down well with the kids. The barge was situated just outside and our meals were served on board! We couldn't fault the menu at all, just your everyday sort of choices with a separte kiddies menu which we failed to find in other nearby restaurants which seemed to cater for adults more. All meals were very reasonably priced, my husband had the fish & chips (best he had tasted in a long time). We had 4 meals and 4 drinks for 26! Too good to be true? Not at all, you MUST visit this place, the staff were very friendly, don't listen to the other negative comments if you're looking for sheer tranquility and excellent food, look no further.

The only good thing about this pub is the location! If they were placed anywhere else this place would have gone bankrupt a long time ago, the people that serve you are kids who havent got a clue. Yeah the menu is reasonably priced , but what you receive is terrible, everything is either deep fried or microwaved which to me makes the menu over priced. If you are visiting Bradford choose quality over location and give this place a miss!!!

Lovely setting for a pub, but the food has never been that brilliant, everything is portion controlled from a well known food supplier, and is basically microwaved. I ordered scrambled egg on toast for my 3 year old child on Tuesday, and was given what I can only describe as revolting. It was a weird off white colour, tasted of plastic, had a rubbery texture, and you could see it was out of a container as it still had the container shape to it! ie soft round flat bits to it, if you know what I mean. I questioned the waitresses about it and was told that it was made that morning!, some 4 hours earlier! , so I said out of a packet then, and they didnt know what to say. To serve this stuff up was unbelievable, especially when it take only a minute to make scrambled egg. So if you want dont wantmicrowave food this is the place to avoid, even if the setting is nice!

Have eaten here several times and the food is good value for money. Stowford Press and Wadworth 6X on tap. Nice in the summer to be able to sit outside by the canal. I recommend that you book a table in advance if you want a meal in the evening. It gets very busy.

This really is the dream canalside pub, but we've had two meals here and neither were that good.

Now back in full flow - even better than before - go have a really good meal here. 3,000% better than the unwelcoming and expensive hovel opposite (canal tavern).

Fantastic food and plasant service. So glad we crossed the tow path from the disorganisation and poor welcome of the Canal Tavern next door. Well done Dick and Jane! Lovely

Fantastic place go, we visit every time we are in the area although extreamly busy during summer months! but definatly worth the wait for the food! Its a Cafe/ Restaurant rather than a pub! and at weekends its open really late and stays open untill the last person leaves! They never kick you out! Ran by Lovely people! I cant rate it enough!

No, don't go there for the beer. It isn't to be recommended, to be honest, and the bitter has even been known to run out, on a busy day. But food is good value and good quality. Can get overrun completely in high summer due to pretty canalside setting and lots of outdoor seating. As for end of the night, that can come early - this isn't really a pub. So you may have to move on. Fortunately there are other drinkeries close by.

Nice little place - fantastic food - good value. I don't go there for the beer.

Neat little place in tiny town. Decent beer on tap. Dick's a great owner with an amazingly good attitude. Numerous outside places to eat, like little huts and a long boat in the canal. But since there isn't anything for kids to do in town, the place is overrun by obnoxious teens on a Friday night. Dick does his best to keep 'em under control. He must be exhausted by the end of the night.
