Have avoided this pub for some years due to boring beer choice. Last month decided to give it a try. Delighted to discover on tap 2 days running a Ruby Mild from Ilkley Brewery. New to me and very nice too.

Westons Old Rosie on handpump also very pleasant.

Have not been in here for many years, but heard it had recently been refurbished or under new ownership and now had an impressive selection of real ales, so thought it would be worth a revisit. I have to say it was pretty underwhelming! Not a very adventurous selection of real ales, though went for a pint of Pendle Witches Brew which was fine. The carpet looks like it may well have been the same carpet that was down 10+ years ago when I last visited. As others have noted, it is pretty much a Wetherspoons-esque pub. Service at the bar was a bit slow, there seems to be enough staff and not a massive queue of customers, but somehow it just seemed to take a while to get served. Probably wouldn't rush to go back - there are much better establishments in the area.

A sort of Wetherspoon's a few doors away from the real McCoy. Does the same thing at much the same price. I prefer it because it is not a JDW, not that I am a snob (I rather like some of them), but because it seems more pub-like. Wetherspoon's look like pubs but are really McDonald's for grown ups. I had a pint of Bombardier (2.69), quite satisfactory, and found a leaning perch without trouble. Bar was a bit crowded with post work drinkers but the staff coped well.

Great range of beers, Barman also very helpful when deciding on choice. Food well priced. Agree with some of the comments that its got a weatherspoons feel to it but 100 percent worth a visiting if you've just rolled out of piccadilly station

I visited this pub on 2nd February along with about 25 other friends who used to work together at Butlins Minehead many years ago. Our ages ranged from mid 50s to early 60s so we are not rowdy lager and shots drinkers. We met just after 13.00 and had been in there about six hours, so you can imagine the amount of money that had been spent! I was wearing a trilby as is my want and a bloke who worked the door came up to me and said "Take that hat off" to which I replied "Pardon" to which he said " I said take that hat off NOW or I'm throwing you out" His attitude put a real spoiler on all of us so we just upped and went. What a disgraceful way to treat people also the beer was no more than average to be honest. Shocking attitude to people who were no threat to anyone.I would recommend total avoidance of this place and how it got into the Good Beer| Guide is a mystery to me

Rather unexceptional pub just down the road from Piccadilly station. As the previous reviewer states, it's similar to a Wetherspoons, in that it has an open-plan soulless interior. Although in my opinion, it was inferior to a Spoons. 3 ales were on - Robinsons Unicorn, Navigation Pale & Ringwood Blizzard. Handy for a drink prior to your train. But there are better options if you have time on your hands.

A lot better than I was expecting,Four handpumps of which I opted for a decent well-travelled pint of Skinner's Cornish Trawler.Nice large comfy city centre pub with great value pub grub, 7/10

A pub similar to the nearby JDW Manchester and County but slightly better. Cheap and cheerful as well as friendly.

This place has improved immeasurably over the past couple of years.Generally 3 ales on though sometimes one pump is a Westons cider[no complaints].Tim Taylor's Golden Best a regular visitor.

The food here is tasty and good value! The decor is also nice and cosy.

Much better crowd than a year ago, scumbag corner has gone! You can enjoy your pint in peace without fear of some redneck trying to sell you stolen jewellry or starting a fight!
Ale is good when it is available.
SORT THE TOILETS OUT! Possibly the worst in Manchester, on par with those in trainspotting!
Good quality cheap drinks though, worth a visit especially on a match day.

OK for a cheap lager in central Manchester...Don`t expect much quality on the beer front....& a strange policy of closing early.

I love this bar. I moved to Canada and it's one of the things I miss the most! There's a fit man who wears a suit that works there too... oh yeah baby!

Another pub which used to serve decent grog before it changed its name from 'The Goose'. 99p for a pint of Bass, or London Pride at 1.29 if you had just been paid. Sadly all the handpumps have gone and it's all smoothflow now. One to avoid.
bob mason - 15 Aug 2004 01:58
Commercial beers, can be alright as a meeting place. 99p per pint on certain days, but that's about the only reason to go there

Always looks like it's trying to be something it's not, although with the demise of Finnegans Wake, it's a long way to the Apollo without a beer.

Went there last night. Arrived at 10pm to be told that there was no draught. Undeterred we sat down with our bottles to see the bar shut at 10:15. They were cleaning tables at 10:20 with the lights full on. We took the hint and left. Never go here!

Bland chain pub not a million miles away from Weatherspoons style. Cheap enough and usually special offers. Does tend to attract the scuzzier end of the market though.
