user reviews of the Crown and Cushion, Blackwater

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Dropped in on Sunday lunchtime to check out the new owners. Very polite and friendly service. Really enjoyed the food - plentiful and good value. The pub is lovely and particularly enjoyed the abundant outdoor space on a nice day (some overlooking the cricket ground). The separate function room is AMAZING - would love to hold a party there. All round great value in a lovely setting. Would definately go again and recommend.

WONDERFUL!! Fodd excellent, staff friendly and the Pub its self if beautiful. Also there is an events room which is just sunning, all original stone floors and a cricket pitch next door for those summer drinks.

We will be coming here again and again!

A fairly traditional pub with lots of internal seating and even more outside. Beer is Shepherd Neame - we tried Bishop's Finger and Spitfire and both were fine. Staff were efficient and friendly.

A wide choice of food available. Two of us went for the Ridiculous Burger - a well filled burger with cheese, pickle, etc - but why ridiculous I couldn't tell you. The other two of us went for the Haddock and chips - served on a long thin plate on what appeared to be greaseproof paper.

All in all a pleasant lunchtime stop.

Cracking pub which I have been to on many a lunchtime (best pub close to the office). The home-made burgers are superb and ales are excellent.
Also has a an outdoor seating area for the summer months which looks across a cricket green.

Oh dear how standards have fallen.!!!!
The only thing that is consistent is the bad manners from the landlady.
Not sure if chefs have moved on, but food quality has fallen.
Will not use this pub again as prices high and standards low.

In response to the comments about the curry, the menu clearly states Thai curry which is a world away from the Indian curry, that customer obviously expected. The Thai appetisers and curries are about the best I' ve had outside Thailand, maybe due to the Thai chefs.

A pleasant country roadside pub within 5 minutes of the M3 with ample parking, good food and reasonable beer. Food was wholesome and freshly cooked, and the staff was attentive and helpful. I asked for a chicken curry - what arrived wasn't what I'd call a curry, it was more a spicy soup, but it was good nonetheless, and I have no complaint. I had a pint of Kent's Best, but I'm afraid to say it wasn't the best pint of Shepherd and Neame I've had. There were two other Shep's ales on but as I was driving I couldn't try them. Well worth stopping here if you hit this area at lunchtime, and it provides a welcome relief from the motorway.

Popped in here after a meeting miles from home - so a random drive past, and needed some grub and a pint...

All excellent. 3 ales on incl those mentioned below. Fantastic burger, superb fish and chips, plentiful portions, friendly staff and a convivial busy atmosphere - even on a Tue lunchtime.

Just what the doctor ordered.

This is such an excallant pub, had a finger, very enjoyable! will be back agian soon! great pub, either sitting inside in winter, or outside in summer.

Spitfire, Bishops Finger and Guest Ale - Currently Canterbuys Jack, the ST Patricks Stout was Excallant!

Log Fires, Tankards, three Real Ales, Shephard Neame Own pub, Plenty of Seating, its Cosey, Warm, overlooks the cricket pitch! 10/10 one of my fav pubs ever!

Went here on a Friday night with friends and had a couple of stunning pints of Bishops Finger and Caterbury Jack.

Lovely pub with friendly staff.

Only drawback was the lack of seating. All of it was reserved for diners, but then its actually quite a small pub and quite different during the week. There is plenty of seating outside.

Will try the food next time.

Setting: Lovely setting with loads of little trinkets, very homely and warm feeling when walk in. (4 / 5)

Staff: Very young staff who don't have the customer in mind. When we sat down and was reading the menu the Manager came over and plonked down a "Reserved" sign on our table and annoced that the table would be needed by 6:30 that evening. He then said that the Kitchen would be closed for an hour from 4:30pm. At this stage he had not notice (or bothered to) that we were reading menus and we had to ask could we order as the Kitchen would be closed in 10 mins. He was very aburbt and was not frendly. When we had all ordered he said "Do you want to pay now or open a tab" we decided we wanted to open a tab, at which point he said he needed a credit card. He was very snappy with taking it and then walked off. I though he should of least brought the machine to use or had asked the person who had the credit card to come with him. We were glad when he left the table and were hoping that the food would win the day as all we had at the moment was a bad taste in our mouths. (0 / 5)

Food: The fish was really good and the presentation was fantastic. The lamb though it tasted fantasic was let down with the amount of veg and the oversized Yorkshire Pudding. The food as a whole was really delightful. (4 / 5)

Overall: Even though the food was fantastic, the overall service really was bad and I would not go back again. It was a family meal with a mixture of young adults and older members of the family and I felt that a little more respect and customer service would have made the Sunday evening meal a wonderful experience.

We had seen this pub many times, passing to get on the M3 as its right on the junction. Decided to give it a go one day and we were greeted by the then, new landlords who had just taken over (this must be almost two years ago ish now.)

We have been back regularly since. The food has got to be among the best 'pub food' out there and is fairly priced for the quality you receive. We have NEVER had a bad meal.

The pub itself is beautiful, has loads of history and is sat next to a cricket field. We have spent many a Sunday, in the garden watching the cricket enjoying a fantastic roast (with the HUGEST Yorkshire pud you have ever seen.) The interior decor for special occasions such as Halloween and Christmas are all done in house by the Landlord, no sign of tat here, very tasteful!

In my opinion it well deserves the two awards it has won over subsequent years. I have recommended it to many friends who have all had a lovely meal and been back.

Its just shame that not all pubs live up to this standard and whilst you 'cant please every one all of the time', appreciated, if you love food, you'll love it here!!!

I am always dragged here for work outings, been there ~ 20 times in the last two years, each time it was a bad experience. bad food, warm beer (lager), suuuper slow service, very rude staff. I have to go again this Friday - might be better because I can stay outside where it may actually be warm (inside is always freeeezing, even in front of the fire.

I see good reviews here and dont understand where they are coming from - must be all family friends of the landlord?
appeland - 26 May 2009 11:19
We have been here 5 times and counting, for lunch.
Good beer on handpump (Sepherd Neame)
Excellent food - well cooked and presented.
Menu has a good selection and changes regularly.
I had the best fish pie I've ever tasted here!
Friendly and attentive bar staff.
Outdoor seating - new tables under pergola.

Last year in the Pub Food category of the Shepherd Neame Pub Awards, recognising more traditional pub fare, the Crown and Cushion won the top prize and was praised for its "fabulous food with a terrific choice of quality dishes". Judges said the pub, run by tenants William Upton and Julie McNally, was "a dream local pub and a true winner". this year, following on from that success, they have now scooped the top prize and been crowned Shepherd Neame Pub of the Year.

Well deserved congratulations to William and Julie; just reward for all their hard work and vision, over the last two years, in creating one of the best pubs in the area.

This is now my lunch time local and has steadily improved. we used to drive past now we stop. Good geer ggod food and good service.
tinplatetony - 15 Mar 2009 08:00
Really like this pub. The food is excellent, the Guinness is very good and the venue is really atmospheric and cosy. The perfect spot to "waste" an afternoon reading the papers and catching up with friends on a miserable winter's day, and I am looking forward to the summer as it has brilliant outdoor areas where I hope to do more of the same. Interesting seeing the mean comments about the landlady - what is wrong with people? Pubs are about character and 'real' people as opposed to the saccharine fake smiles you get in the chain pubs/bars. It is her pub, her choice of decor, her choice in menu, her direction as to the condition fo the beer - if you want to know what she is really like, look at her pub!
Lisa_Lashes - 11 Mar 2009 09:12
evie and FrankFr both joined on the same day i don`t subscribe to coincidence, maybe they cohabit or more likely they are one person.
On our last visit to this pub we found it below average,so no reason to go back.
Beersupper - 2 Jan 2009 15:20
Wonderful,extremely/incredibly,atmospheric,cheerful,attentive,cricket,woodland,best...........at ease.

Frank and evie - not a negative vibe from these members of staff (!?).

These one posters have very different views than those who have rated this and many other pubs. One wonders why !! 2/10 rating for contrivance.

simwilliams - 2 Jan 2009 15:05
I think this pub is one of the best I have ever been to. Wonderful hosts, wonderful location and extremely hospitable. Am not sure what some of the negative comments are about as I have always found the landlords to be amazingly friendly and welcoming. Having spent Xmas Day 2008 there in Meade Hall with such an amazing dinner laid on, I would more than recommend this place. Even if you don't live nearby, it's worth the extra effort to see such a wonderful slice of England. I wish it was my local and I think all the staff have made this a place to be incredibly proud of.

evie - 2 Jan 2009 08:25
Excellent pub, food and landlord, shame about the landlady(if it is female with its deep husky voice)very rude ignorant person not a lover of the general public does not like to be challenged over a bill, makes me wonder what that type of person is doing in this type of business. Landlady would fair better as a drag artist got to be seen to be believed.
MISSYGREEN - 12 Oct 2008 13:50
Good ale, although limited range and expensive, and food OK but shame about the tart behind the bar. The expression 'rough as a badger's a...e' comes to mind!

Move on.
BillJ - 5 Oct 2008 22:21
Sadly, the landlady (petite blond lady with specs and a husky voice?) must have been having a bad day today. I came with two business colleagues for lunch; firstly she kept us waiting at the bar for a good five minutes before she served us. She was very 'offish', sternly telling us we had to have our table number before ordering (fair enough), and making no attempt to be 'mine host' whist we ordered. The food came quickly and was nice, delivered by another much more cheerful gentleman. When I came to pay she was very put out and humourless that I got my table number wrong; I tried to help by reminding her waht I had ordered but she snapped 'everyone ordered that today'. When I politeley asked why she was so 'cold' she put it back on me and said 'Are you having a bad day?.' What a shame - I shant be going back, and I will be telling all my contacts at the nearby SUN offices about her cold welcome. Her Loss.

Always looking for a good pub in the area for decent food and at last we found one. Not within walking distance for us but no matter, its worth it! The food always delights - new ideas and old faves, presentation 10/10. My husband's the ale drinker and he hasn't complained so I guess thats good too. The manager is eager to please and very attentive, he clearly wants the customer to enjoy their meal without being in your face. Great, give it a try.
patriciareid - 30 Apr 2008 20:14
The beers are well kept and always in good condition, the Kent's Best being my favourite session beer. The wine list is good value and wide-ranging with quality wines by the glass. The food is freshly prepared cleverly presented and served in man-size portions with a constantly changing menu that mixes pub stalwarts like fish & chips with Thai fusion and Spanish tapas. The staff are efficient and the pub is usually full at lunchtimes with IT types from the local industrial estates but it is still a proper country pub.
paddymiguel - 1 Apr 2008 16:11
Even though the address is Blackwater, Camberley this pub is on the Minley Road in Minley, the road that connects M3 J4a and the A30.

The landlord & landlady who took over this place back in 2006 have done a stirling job of both the dcor and the food. The atmosphere is warm and cosy, every dish is a delight and the Bishops Finger ale is one of the best pints in the area.

The Mead Hall nextdoor is good for parties and there's a cricket pitch outside... how much more English could you get? Highly recommended pub.

Great pub with great food
stevedon - 13 Dec 2007 20:21
Has to be one of my Favouite Pubs in our area!! The Bishops Finger is the most delightful pint around, and the other two ales (Spitfire & Kents Best) are well kept as well!
haleale - 12 Dec 2007 17:26
Now owned by Shephard Neame this pub offers Kents Best, Spitfire and Bishops Finger! Their are Tankards, Fire Log Fires and a Large Car Park to be found!
Either in winter sitting next to the log fire or out on the large patio area over looking/watching the local cricket team, either way its great with a tankard of real ale! Well Worth a Visit!
timsmith88 - 4 Dec 2007 13:00
Great little boozer. I don't go to pubs to eat Sunday lunch, and frankly anywhere that has such a low turnover of Smirnoff Ice that it goes out of date gets my seal of approval! Great Shepherd Neame ales, top atmosphere, a superb pub.
guinnessdan - 25 Nov 2006 07:10
Although the decor and layout is fantastic, I can honestly say that I have never had such a disappointing roast Sunday lunch in all my life! My friend and I agreed that it was very bland, the meat was terribly tough, no taste, no colour - just awful! Oh, but it was hot (credit where credit is due). The staff consisted of a few young boys that looked half asleep and very slowed up..even though the pub was empty (now I know why!).
To top it all my smirnoff ice was past its sell by date and although I didn't expect anything..and actually, it tasted fine..an apology or offer or something else, wouldn't have gone a miss. No, just this blank look...
This place had got so much potential! A real pity. Would I go back? you have got to be kidding!

For a real taste of old time country charm you will have to go a long way to beat the Crown. Situated off the beaten track next to a cricket ground (where the aptly named Crown Taverns CC play), this quiet watering hole offers quality real ale in peaceful surroundings. Part of the site houses the Tithe Barn which serves good food at good prices in a rebuilt tudor barn. Atmosphere is very much the watch word. Getting there can be a little difficult, but it is well worth the effort, you won't regret it.
