We went to the pub quiz and got ripped off! The quizmaster announced at the start of the evening that the prize for the winners would be 40 and a tee shirt. We laughed about that as we'd been to the quiz here a year before and had a great night but finished last. But this year we won! While we were high-fiving each other, mine host, Malkolm, marched up to our table and slapped down our prize money - 10 - and walked off before I could say anything. I approached him and the quizmaster and asked how come we'd been given only a tenner when it had been clearly announced that the prize was 40. Malkolm replied "Inflation" and again walked away from me. When I got back from the loo, another 10 had been offered, with the new explanation that the prize money was reduced "because one of the rounds was too easy". We left it there. Ironic that this year we left disappointed and sad having won, whereas we left in high spirits last year having finished last.

Malkolm, we spent a lot of money in your pub this week and we really enjoyed The Swan and Noss Mayo - shame on you for tainting our memories with this petty act of chiseling nastiness.

PS: we did get the tee shirt.

We popped in this pub after a walk in the area.
We thought the other pub in the village looked a bit expensive so we tried this one instead.
Everything was fine about the place, the atmoshere, the drinks, just one complaint though was that it was the middle of winter and the fire was out!
When asked the young girl said they had forgotten to get some logs in.
People will not except a cold pub. It's half the reason to go in on a day like that.

6/10

Attended end of May this year. Cracking pint of Doombar. Had a fantastic steak but was ruined when the landlord had a domestic in the kitchen with his wife that was heard by us all.
Nevermind had a great pint of Addlestones cloudy cider.
Far better than the Ship.

Agree with apreynolds. This is the place to go for a pint or three in Noss Mayo. Not that the Ship's beer is bad, but it isn't a pub, really.

Visited this pub whilst on holiday at the end of September 2010. Overall I liked it, nice mix of locals and visitors. The landlord was very friendly too. There are two outside seating terraces, one directly outside the pub and one down a set of steps closer to the water level. I would say this is a pub first that also offers food. That's not to say the food is poor, on the contrary, just that you wouldn't feel out of place just having a pint.

Beer: good, a selection of local(ish) ales and the usual Guinness and Lagers for those not into real ales.
Food: good selection, including tapas, reasonably priced (for the area), plus home-made cakes displayed on the bar to go with a post meal coffee.

Visited while on holiday Oct 2009. Very hospitable, beers perfect and good straightforward home cooked menu. The menu changed everyday we were there, which made our stay most enjoyable. Must have one of the best views in Devon, with a lovely terrace to enjoy them from.

Visited with my kids early Sep. '07. First time for 3 years. Last time, I stayed in the old Post Office which adjoins the pub and the then landlord operated a policy of closing when we left - 3 a.m. - seems to be slightly different now. Beers were good, didn't eat but those who did seemed more than happy. Great location, a pub worth stopping by.

The ambiance was a bit disappointing; why do they put potplants in the grower's brown plastic pots on the table?? But the food was superb! Do try the white-bait and the half lamb shoulder!!

newly refurbished charachter pub by the river yealm. good real ales and wine but the fresh seafood they cook is out of this world. it is nice to see a pub like this who use local produce rather than pre packaged crap.the chef is only young but very good
