user reviews of The Great Eastern, Isle of Dogs

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After the disappointment of no real ale on draught in the Lord Nelson it was good to find Doom Bar and Old Rosie Cider on the 4 hand pumps, the other 2 had no ale on.

In addition to Doom Bar being on there is a good range of bottles, the Trooper went down a treat until they ran out then it was onto bottles of Flying Dog IPA.

It was busy with the locals enjoying the food and drinks. Re the food, the burgers smelt good but after 9pm when the food had stopped being served there was a strong smell of fat and grease in the pub which was quite annoying.

Lovely décor with high ceilings and lots of lighting giving the pub a very bright feel to it.

Good service from the friendly barman, decent selection of bottled ales but at over £4.00 a bottle I feel these are slightly overpriced, still worth a visit.

We live in the Isle of Dogs, and have been looking for a good local. After being away for a year, we stumbled upon The Great Eastern, and have adopted it as "Our Local". We've tried the other pubs in the area, and aren't inclined to return to them. The Great Eastern has a great feel to it, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Saturday mornings its full of people, and has a good vibe. They serve good coffee too, and that's a big plus for us. Big thumbs up, and hope they have continued success.

Not slating the place, just gave impressions I got on a first visit. Found it very starnge that they dont do any food except pizza, in these days food is a big attraction to a pub along with a good choice of drinks. Sadly there is nothing to make you travel to the pub....thats crazy as it has a super location etc....could have been made into a fine example of a pub but....real shame the pub company appeared to have sold off the garden as well.....

I love how people seem to pick holes in what has turned out to be a pretty good local pub. Friendly staff, reasonable prices on drinks - surely thats the most important thing? In that case, the Great Eastern is just about perfect.

There were worries from people that the backpackers accomedation would lead to problems, but that has not happened - If anything the pub has improved from its previous version, which lets face it was dingy and was losing money because of lack of customers.

The GE has become my pub of choice if I fancy a relaxed local drink close to home, and see it continuing to do so.

This is a million times better since it re-opened.

The old Waterman's Arms before it closed down was un-welcoming and seemed to be full of the same old faces that were mates of the owners/people who run it (always a bad sign).

The new Great Eastern is far more welcoming, has a good vibe and atmosphere to it and is open to suggestions made by their customers if within reason. You get those who liked their status quo and ask for hooks on the bar again (like that is the most important part of a pub) and resist change but the fact is the old pub closed down because it was not making good business (and drugs I heard).

The pub sells pizza as food, this pub came about ten years too late for me when I would go out for a drink and want a pizza on the way home but I can't blame them for that... or can I?

Great little local... The staff are friendly, helpful, make time to talk to you and get to know you and the girls are pretty hot too ;-)

... but please update the jukebox more! :-)

Popped in over the weekend for a drink, first time since the refurb....not really sure what to make of it, seemed quite soulless with no atmosphere. Also the garden has gone, apparently nothing to do with the pub anymore..a big shame i these parts.

What a strange thing to change the name of this historic Isle of Dogs pub. Its history is as the Watermans Arms..look at all the books going back to Dan Farson who took it on and named it the Watermans. If anything it should have been renamed to The Newcastle Arms, its original name, located next to the Newcastle Draw Dock.

About to re-open soon as The Great Eastern. Glad the pub is being kept open but why change the name. The Watermans Arms is what it's called but some dimwit at the brewery marketing deems it not suitable! Its also going to have a coffee lounge and have hostel type accomodation. I only hope the actual pub bit is OK and that you can still get a decent roast dinner for under 8.00 like before.

Popped over for a pint and found it appeared to sadly be closed. Looks a classic boozer.

I'm disappointed to have to report that this pub is "Closed until further notice" as per a notice on the front door ( 7.30 pm yesterday )

Judging by one or two of the earlier reviews, one might expect this pub to be less than welcoming; perhaps even frightening. But that wasnt my experience. The girl who served me my pint was efficient and friendly; I sat down to read my book over a quiet pint while a few other punters at the bar carried on their conversation. I finished my beer then left seems fair enough to me.

Real ales on were Pride, Broadside and Youngs Bitter. I had the Pride, which was not brilliant, but OK. This is a large pub near the river, with a separate dining room on the right as you go in. Actually this is a comfortable, what I might call old style, pub. There were a few locals in, using what some might regard to be overly colourful language, standing drinking at the bar, but otherwise it was fairly quiet on a Wednesday lunchtime. The music was the usual banal pop music, but it was not being played too loud. I wouldnt mind dropping in for another pint if I were in the area.

This is a family run pub, freindly atmosphere locals polite and a comfortable pub to have a quiet drink with friends before you go out on the tiles! food is lovely and worth the money! cooked to high standards. Lovely indian resturant with freindly staff in the evening but traditional english food served hot through the day! Will definatly become my local, I have just moved to isle of dogs! Best pub for beer and a chat!

Out and out east end boozer, be prepared to be a local or suffer the wrath of silence and stares. Try not to step on the lost teeth that litter the floor. Pool tables and fruit machines definitely off limits to first timers. Cheap beer though the Pier Tavern down the road is a less worrisome pint.
