user reviews of the North Pole, Greenwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Perfect location all under 1 roof if you are looking for lovely food, amazing cocktails and a place to put your dancing shoes on!!! Not forgetting the lovely garden at the back with table service and shisha pipes!! We really did have a lovely night at The North Pole and I really would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent place to go in Greenwich.

After reading previous reviews about this bar/restaurant, after visiting London for the weekend for a friends wedding, me and my 5 girlfriends decided to come to Greenwich and experience this place for ourselves. We spent the afternoon in Greenwich visiting various tourist attractions. Before we knew it, it was evening time and as it was a Saturday night, we changed into our heels and decided to go on a little bar crawl around Greenwich. We started off in what they call the cutty sark area or the centre of Greenwich should I say. It was rather quite rowdy and after a couple of drinks, we decided to take the short walk up to the North Pole. Well in our heels, it most probably took a little longer than it would have done otherwise. Just as we were approaching it, we all agreed that if it turned out to be how one of the reviews explained it to be, we would catch the train back up to central where our hotel was. Well let me just say this, we didn't get back till gone 4am! It was a truly amazing night in there and if the lights hadn't been turned on, we would have stayed a hell of a lot longer! We were actually presently surprised as to how much fun we had that night in the North Pole. It had a lot to offer with 2 floors of music and 2 djs. Music was great. We loved the fact that the Dj upstairs responded to all of our requests too (unlike in some other places where they do so after 2 hours if ur lucky). Even though it was manic busy, the Dj said he would play our songs and he did. We were dancing the night away! We were also up and down like yo yos as we wanted to dance to both types of music! It offered music to suit everyone of all ages. Cocktails were lush, staff very friendly and helpful! What topped it all off was at the end of the night and how the staff were so helpful in helping us find a cab to take us back. They called it for us and said for us to wait inside until it arrived. As a group of girls, we felt so safe especially with it being so late and what with being unfamiliar with the area. Overall a top top night!! It was amazing! I will be sure to come back when I'm next in town! This time, we will miss out the cutty sark area and head straight to the north pole restaurant which I have yet to experience (sure this has even more to offer!) and then down to boogie boogie boogie!! Definitely 9/10 for our night out!

I havent felt compelled to write a review like this before but I really would like to warn people about this place. We got there at about midnight and paid 5 each to get in. The ground floor bar seemed to be ok except for the fact that men out numbered women by about 10 to 1. The trouble started when we went downstairs to the basement club the south pole, it is seedy and again filled almost exclusively with groups of men but I was kind of expecting that from what it was like upsatirs. I was with 2 girlfriends and we walked in an started dancing after about five minutes a guy that was standing at the side came over to tell us to dance somewhere else. We took this as a joke at first and ignored it but when we didnt move away he returned with another guy and shouted at us to move away now or he and his friend would smash our faces in he was in our faces at this point and a bouncer came over and told us to move away a bit but stay there so that he could see what they would do!!! I was shocked, the bouncer had seen and heard what had happened and wanted to use us as bait to see what they did! We moved to the other side of the room and continued dancing only to have the guys surrounding us start to touch us, they started my repeatedly stroking our hair and trying to grind up against us and then moved on to what can only be described as groping! We tried to fend them off and I also went to another bouncer to ask for help but he said he could do nothing and maybe we should just go upstairs and dance. We left after this, in all were there for about 45mins, as we waited for a cab upstairs we were asked by the owner how our night was, I tried to explain to him how I felt being downstairs and he laughed it off and said that as long as he doesnt see anything he will do nothing and that the men downstairs come for a good night out too! I wasnt drunk and I go out to clubs often, I have never experienced anything like this place before, I genuinely felt unsafe. I have been to the restaurant before and I can honestly say it was nice but I would warn any girl never to go there for a drink or to dance!

well, my wife and I and 2 of our friends who live in SE8 development went for diner on friday and we were again very impressed. Suzy-sue says that its no longer a restaurant??? On the first floor we had a lovely first class meal with a pianist entertaining us on the grand piano they have. The service from Mr Kumar was terrific and the free champagne on arrival is a nice touch. We had a 3 course set menu for 25 per head that we were very happy with and the food is best described as modern european. Ive eaten at the Guildford Arms and Inside as well as Bar du Musee and Rivington and can easily say that this place is just as good - perhapos the fantastic pianist even swings my vote towards the North Pole. We headed down to the bar after our meal and the music playing was club classics and disco style. The crowd were a lot younger than that of the restaurant but we certainly didnt feel out of place (our age group was late 30s). I definitely felt safe and saw no signs of the illicit activities that previous reviewers have claimed. Yes, the decor is a little tired, the disco lights look a little naff but the atmosphere was good, the drinks were very good (2 for 1 on cocktails on a friday night all night!) and the staff were very friendly and polite. We were all very happy and will definitely be adding this place to our list of favourite places. After some research, I found that the restarurant is advertised on top table - I suuggest you check out the reviews on their from genuine diners - they have a very good rating!

Went yesterday for the Eng v Slovenia game and was quite impressed actually. They had a tv on the front terrace which was packed and loads of tvs in the main bar which was also packed. was about to walk out when the guy on the door told us there was a garden at the back with screens too. when we went out there it was really nice. there was a bbq, two massive umbrellas and also 2 tvs and it was a great atmosphere. we had a jug of peroni on tap for 10quid and a couple of burgers and thought that the venue was good. the recent negative comments surprised me a bit because it really didnt seem that type of place? will definitely be goin in the evning this friday and again on sun afternoon for the eng v germany game so will keep u posted but it seems that the managment have sorted things out? my work colleague told me the restaurant on the first floor is very good so will probably try it on friday.

johnmichael34 - you want to get out more if you think this is as good as a bar can be... unless you are one of the chavs that AutumnBanter refers to...

It has been going strong for over ten years but not run the current owners - it used to be really good value when it first opened but slowly the prices have risen, the quality has dropped and its no longer a restaurant but a bar that does average food. Strange the AA don't mention that 'award' on their own website.

Oh and maybe the reference to a stabbing was either about the guy who was hit on the head with a rock or the shooting - take your pick...

Small corner location pub on the main road that has been turned into a modern bar/nightclub with an upstairs restaurant. No cask, and lagers 4 a pint. Black painted floor and modern uncomfortable chairs. Not that large. Not my sort of place, and hardly a pub.
SilkTork - 22 Sep 2009 22:49
I've been here a couple of times before on a Sunday night and had a good time. Went along for the first time in a while with my boyfriend on Sunday - and didn't have such a good time. Main disappointment is that outside they advertise jazz - and the band ain't jazz - just cheesy pop cover versions! The bouncers are unwelcoming, and the young lady behind the bar made it perfectly clear that she was more intent on talking on her mobile phone than serving me at an empty bar. A feeling of rudeness permeates from the staff - and the decor really is like stepping back into the 1990s. Don't go for the live music - unless you're plastered before you get there!

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I am a regular of this pub and also know the owner and his wife and would like to commend them on the great job they do running this place. This is the "original" gastro pub of greenwich. It has been going strong for over 10 years. they serve excellent food and with the recent addition of the lovely garden this is a great pub and us locals of the area are very lucky to have this pub. even in these gloomy days the pub is still flourishing and with regards to the last review about a stabbing THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING OF THE SORT! they have won the aa pub guides "pick of the area" 6 years consecutively and also been a finalist for best "modern european" restaurant for the archant life restaurant awards. in short i love this place and feel that people should support there local and keep them in business instead of writing stupid reviews about factual innaccuracies. well done north pole the locals of the ashburnham area and onese8 will help to maintain u stand strong and keep up the good work!!
johnmichael34 - 3 Apr 2009 11:45
what about the stabbing?
secretdrinker - 1 Mar 2009 12:27
If you like living in Hollyoaks, this is the place for you. I will say the staff was very friendly and drinks were reasonable - but the people, my goodness, the people who go there are absolutely astonishing.

I came here on the recommendation of an acquaintance and was absolutely amazed by the trashiness and nastiness of the people there.

Tacky, tacky, tacky.
AutumnBanter - 3 Feb 2008 00:28
Went here for my recent birthday party dinner and was very impressed. The restaurant is very swish and the food service and ambience superb. After our meal, we headed down to the main bar and we boogied till 2am. The staff were very good, the drinks priced well and the dj played some classic old skool disco tunes. We all agreed that a good time was had by all. Will dfinintely return.
johnmichael34 - 2 May 2007 10:35
Nice bar, decent promotions (Happy hour runs from 4 - 8pm Friday and Saturday), lively atmosphere. The restaurant can be expensive but the food is worth it; they also have attentive friendly service and a pianist tinkling away in the corner. The basement club (South Pole) is an abomination: fill your living room with tacky lighting, one girl and 20 moody wide-boys and you have a decent approximation.

What a place! We went for New Years Eve this year and last and had a ball! The place was transformed into 3 floors of dancing, and the atmosphere was friendly and lively. The DJ was plastered on both occasions, but that just made for a more amusing night! The drinks are a little on the pricey side: 3 for a pint of nat's pee and it was 20 to get in, but worth it. The ladies behind the bar (and indeed in front of it) were very pleasing to the eye, and we will definitely be visiting this coming New Year's Eve. Top night, not too crowded, prompt and attentive bar service, and - dare I say it - friendly bouncers!

Came here to watch the Croatia, En ger land game (11 Oct) and was pleased to easily get a seat. The place was empty despite 3 large plasma screens showing the match. 2.90 for a pint of Star and 3.50 for a Magners, so make what you want from that. Made a welcome change from going to the nearby Auctioneer to watch an En ger land game and unlike the last boozer I was in (Phoenix, Victoria), they had the commentary blaring out to generate a bit of atmosphere. I might come here again to watch football when in Greenwich, but see my previous posts about this place!

Regarding the game, I initially missed Paul Robinson's farcical howler for En ger land though. I had turned away from the screen to tell my mate at the bar I did not want ice in my Magners, assuming Robinson would comfortably clear the ball. Why do people follow fads by drinking Magners with copious amounts of ice, when it comes out of a fridge anyway and the ice simply waters down the drink, usually numbing your throat in the process??

I am a jazz fan so I had lunch in the Novotel along the road and heard some great free jazz. I am new to the area so after a wander around Greenwich I walked past the bar and went in to hear the "Jazz". The manager should be arrested under the trade discriptions act. The musicians loved themselves but were terrible, the staff couldn't care less and the majority of customers were up their own ar*se's

We came here Saturday night before 9ish (2 Sept) after watching the En ger land game in the nearby Auctioneer. Fair enough, I had my Charlton top on and didn't expect to get in, especially with local rivals Millwall playing at home today. Yet the bouncers tried to tell us, 'mixed couples only' on arriving at the door!?! They were having a larf, surely. Central London zone 1 policy in Greenwich?? The jokers. We eventually got in, as I wore my mates t-shirt and he just put on his jumper, but I was not impressed with the bouncers attitude. 'Mixed couples only'!?!

Inside was devoid of any vibrancy or female talent, so we went downstairs to the South Pole bit. Awful. It eventually became too packed with blokes and for the non-smoker, it became so smoky, my eyes started to sting. As I have said before, too costly, too crowded and too cosmopolitan. There were a few nondescript women in the corner near the toilets, but most of them were so far up their own @rse. One even had the cheek to tell me her mate 'was not interested', when I was simply dancing close to her. Given how packed it was, there was not much room for me to dance elsewhere! Anyway, I had as much chance searching for H-Files in the North Pole, as Andorra scoring against En ger land earlier that afternoon in the footy. See my previous review which I feel is quite apt. I will not be coming here again, unless with a 'lady-friend'.

Stopped off for a quick pint with my wife on one of the hottest days of the year so far, the air conditioning was turned up full, just what I needed, as was a few nice cold pints of Staropramen. We left when they started clearing a dance area and setting decks up. Not somewhere I'd come at night or in winter, there's no ale on tap and it's expensive, but good for a few cold ones on a hot summer's day. Nice friendly barmaid too, which always helps
mannyowar - 25 Jul 2006 16:39
I agree with the first review about the North Pole, in that it is a livelier place to impress your partner, given the appeal Greenwich generally has towards couples, i.e. the plethora of restaurants. For this reason, I like the North Pole and it does a job, given my girlfriend enjoyed her time there Easter Sunday. For a Friday or Saturday night out with the lads though, I find the club downstairs (cleverly named South Pole) too costly, too crowded and too cosmopolitan. Can also get too smoky if that is not your cup of tea. Yet this place is quality for New Years Eve if you live locally, as all 3 floors are open and the vibe has always been great the years I have been. I did also enjoy watching the 2006 Brazil, France World Cup quarter-final game outside with the lads. The food here is supposed to be excellent. Overall, a great to visit as a couple or watch football with mates, but I would not otherwise bother.
Searching_for_H_Files - 14 Jul 2006 10:42
Horrid place, we went downstairs to the South Pole. Full of rudeboys kissing their teeth trying to act the big man. They let it get too packed. Drinks were also very expensive
casual66 - 11 Jul 2006 14:41
Had a few beers here the other night as a friend's band were playing (OK - more than "a few" but who's counting? I certainly wasn't...) On the plus side the music was great, the place felt pretty lively for a Sunday and the staff were attentive and very friendly. On the down side I'd like to see some proper ale. I had a damned good evening though and would certainly head back if I was in the area.
tim_eyles - 28 Apr 2006 00:40
This was a fantastic old fashioned boozer in the late 90's with an authentic interior. It had nice bitters and a pub theatre upstairs. I Saw an Oscar Wilde play and Shakespeare's The Tempest here. Somehow I doubt it's current clientele would know much about Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Am I right in thinking it had two bars? Anyway, I wouldn't bother going to it nowadays. It's just plain boring.
JamesW - 16 Mar 2006 00:52
I've been drinking in this establishment since the day it opened. It is brilliant. The restaurant in particular is outstanding, they are the only restaurant other than chapter two that are in the michelin guide and that are aslo very highly rated in every other quality publication. If the previous reviewers consider the customers chavs because they wear expensive clothes then no wonder they feel out of place - they must be the real chavs! This place is always busy, has very good dj's, serves excellent food and drinks - what more could anyone want! I cant wait for the world cup this year now that they have 8 plasma screens!
DavidThomas - 13 Mar 2006 23:39
The main reason I joined this site was because I ran the North Pole PH on Greenwich High road London from 1980-85.
Took it from a quiet pub of dart players and Saturday night gin drinkers to a thriving Real Ale Free House.
We had A theatre group that used what is now the first floor restaurant.
The clientele where varied and colourful. Anyone remember little old Flo, an Irish lady that grabbed the best looking guy every night to see her across the Road. Not bad for over 80 years old.
We even had a few legends.
Mr."Tickle the ivories Holland" and the guys from "The Squeeze" (although in those days I did not know them from Adam).
It's a shame to read what it has become now.....in my day it was a REAL PUB.
There you go......

Intrepid - 10 Jan 2006 13:05
Like sitting outside in the summer but as mentioned below this place is full of knob end rich people with bad taste who talk VERY LOUDLY and thus the atmosphere suffers sometimes.

Dont ever come here for a drinking session, you will have to remortgage your house.
reverendlionelblair - 8 Jan 2006 15:39
Pretentious over priced hang out for wannabe Paris Hilton types. Passes itself of as the "Classy" pub in the area but it is full of Chavs and well helled ponces. Avoid it like the plague if you like a proper pub. 1/10 for laughing at the nouvell riche
paulhodgson - 30 Dec 2005 13:03
This pub is awful, second only to St Chris's for Chavs. This place is done up like it is a set from a third rate RnB video (complete with microscopic VIP room ffs!) The beers are alright and are different from your bog standard pub but just the same as any over priced bar round leicester square, though I have heard good things about the food. However, DO NOT order spirits in there, they gave me the most woefully short measure I had ever seen when they thought I wasnt looking!

The clientele is awful. Basically designer chavs (Think Lacoste, Chaps, etc). Last time I was in their was a woman in with one of those small little rat dogs like Paris Hilton's got - and she blended right in. I mean if that doesnt underline the type of wannabe bar this is I dont know what does.

All that having been said it is not a bad place to go and watch the football without having to put up with a crush.

Hello! I am ALI BABA from New Jersey. Yhis pub is the best. After having a nicely poured drink with the Mrs. we waltzed upstairs for a lovely and well-priced orange duck and seafood meal. We sat by the fireplace and will always maintain the North Pole as a wonderful memory. We now live in New Jersey and when we return to Greenwich, it will be our first stop. The owner, Osman and Tam were really great guys and even ran out to get my car because of the weather. Ali Baba and George

Really great restaurant/bar/club. fairly small, but good atmosphere, wicked cocktails, a vip room and a cool little club downstairs(south pole)... what more could you ask for?
mike - 8 Nov 2004 13:54
food's great, can't fault it... pricey though
Dan - 14 Jun 2004 15:41
Not the kind of pub you would go to if you wanted to drink real ale, but a very friendly and relaxed bar. Sells Staropramen and the best cocktails in Greenwich. Quite a large bar, larger than the Guildford or Ashburnham, with a private section. Also has a restaurant upstairs which does some of the best food in Greenwich and Blackheath.
Andrew - 15 Feb 2004 09:53
The sort of place you'd go if you wanted to impress a potential girl/boyfriend "Look, I come to this place so I must be loaded!". Staff are reasonably friendly (probably due to the amount of cash you hand over) but the pub is very small and you can forget about the club downstairs, you'll have more room in your local broom cupboard.
