Landlord formerly of Monmartre of Essex Road (Now a Japanese noodle bar). Usually quite good for food, however last time we went, was dissapointed mainly with quaslity of ingredients (cheapo sausages) and wobbly table. Not really a beer drinkers' pub, with unused handpumps and some weird Adnams lager thing on keg. Will go back, as I'm sure last Sunday was just an aberration.

Congratulations to the young French couple running this place. The food is fantastic and although the handpumps sadly lay dorment, the wine selection is very good with wonderful service too.

Now called the Bastille, it serves fantastic french food, reasonably priced with friendly (and beautiful female) staff!
Not massively recommended for just drinking, but if you fancy something to eat then it's the best around.

After reading some bad reviews I approached this place with trepidation. I had been before for a tasty starter but was going for an occasion with the missus and didnt want it going tits up.

Got there early and pub was nearly empty. Nice big windows, good seating, nice vibe, the customers typical Islington fare - I couldnt swear to it but I think they were all reading the guardian.

Had a very pleasant few drinks then headed through to the restaurant as the first customers of the night. We got excellent service from the french chap who served us and my foie gras & pheasant starter was excellent, as was her humous & olive starter. her mixed seafood pasta and my tuna steak main were both absolutely fine and portions generous. We couldnt face desert after - and left happy paying 60 odd including a very reasonable bottle of champaign.

In the mid late 90s this was a cracking bar. Something happened around 2002 though and it filled up with annoying "yummy mummies" who seemd to spawn annoying brats - I once went expecting a few scoops on a Saturday evening only to find around 15 snot-goblers running around the bar - the mums all sitting at a table drinking there Chablis and talking about baby-systems.
I didn't go back until November last year - the place seemed different - there were 3 or 4 obnoxious middle aged men f'ing and blinding [one of them turned out to be the landlord] - What a shame that a great bar has turned into a nothing bar - I blame the yummy mummies!

Just premium lagers here and you won't get much so you're looking at nearly 6 for two pints. Friendly staff and foods OK. Not really worth sitting outside as adjacent roads are busy. Bewtter to go to the Snooty Fox or Alma round the corner.

I first went to this pub when i moved to the area about three and a half years ago. It was great. lovely atmosphere, good food, nice building with planty of light...

i went in again last wednesday for dinner with a friend and was shocked. at 8 o'clock we were the only people in the restaurant and smugly thought to ourselves that we must no something others did not.

Alas we were wrong. all of the draught beers except stella were off and the menu appeared to have doubled in price and halved in options.

To add to all this misery the kitchen is open plan in the dining room and the chef had a friend to 'visit'. She looked as if she could do with a wash, a change of clothes a decent feed and - judging by the volume at which she was talking - her ears syringed as well. She gave the chef some money and he went away and brought her back soemthing in return. I don't know what it was, but it certainly wasn't a steak sandwich or any other food.

Do yourselves a favour and go to the excellent canonbury in one direction or the alma in the other.
