Strictly a pub for the locals. By locals I mean the regulars who hog the bar and get their beers topped up first even if you have been at the bar a few minutes waiting to be served. At least they had some decent music in the function room. Bland selection of beers on offer.

Harsh comment from the beer festival guy but he clearly doesn't know the pub or the landlord (and landlady) very well. They run and financially support various live music events all year round and raise a lot of money for cancer charities , not just over 2 days in the summer. I attended the beer festival in 2010 and it is a good event for a good cause - true - but I think it's a bit insensitive to stick posters up in a pub 200m from the festival when we all know how tough it has been for licensed trade of late. With so many pretentious and really expensive gastropubs in the area, it's good to have a down to earth, well run local boozer with a few well kept beers that offers something for everybody. The 6 B&B rooms are excellent and the breakfast superb and the newly extended function room is perfect for live music and private parties. If it is too rough a drinking hole for our critic above, maybe he should stick to a nice cappucino down at Costa's with the Cubs?

This pub is a rough drinking hole and the landlord is not a man I would have on my christmas list ever. Does anyone know why he would be so mean by ripping down posters advertising the Hersham Beer Festival and being rude and threatening to people about it? The Beer Festival not only brings the community together with two days of fun and entertainment for all but it is a charity event raising much needed funds for the local cubs and scout troop and the Princess Alice Hospice. What an awful man. I am off to the Beer Festival. Avoid this pub

I have stayed at this pub for a lttle over a year. This is a great place. The management are very friendly, the food is excellent and the rooms are first class. The locals are very friendly, and I have had many happy hours with most of them. They have a jazz night on Wednesdays where a local band just roll up and play to their hearts content. I commend this pub to anyone, and is in an ideal location being only about two miles from the A3 and fifteen minutes walk from either Walton or Hersham stations where trains are readily available to transport you into Waterloo in just about twenty minutes.
I will definately be back here. And just to prove that I am not biased, read my comments about the Hautboy at Ockham. That place was a disaster!

nice traditional pub with great music. I also love the excellent Tuesday night blues band - they do some classic rock also, and if you can sing or play guitar you can get up and jam!
Nice and friendly, not at all pretentious just authentic.

Not a bad place for live groups. Just one suggestion. Why not put the gig list on the internet so pepes know what is on. It gets hairy trying to read the blackboard while on the roundabout.

This is another pub that is greatly improved by the smoking ban!
The Wednesday night jazz sessions are still popular, with visitors from as far afield as Scotland.

A great olde style pub, soon to have a B&B added once the long awaited work is finished, although it may not be, the landlord is waiting to hear about a court date following his assault on a customer who nearly died as a result. This can't be a good advert for a pub, Friday night is Pikie night with drunken idiots and women with their dyed blonde hair, trying to be Essex girls. You are better off drinking in the Royal George or the Bricklayers.

Nice quiet pub on a Friday night because on that night there's no live music but no food either. Quite a bit of character because of the old beams, but less so in the large 'barn' section normally used for gigs - which is the section you need to use if you're a non-smoker. I found the staff very friendly. London Pride and Courage Best were on tap.

As a Wednesday night Blue Moon Jazz Band regular, it is good to see all the improvements to this pub.
Certainly a good night's entertainment of Traditional Jazz, every week.

Any pub is good that has live music. I saw a band months ago, can't remember the band. They were excellent, they were a 3 piece unit with a tall stocky [ rugby looking ]dark guy on guitar, really good guitar, and the band played led zep . . yes!!! and greenday and even reggae, they were superb. Never seen them since, as i go in there from time to time.
The bar maid that night was a sad looking young cow. No smile. Not good! The beer was good and a good selection. The place could do with more of a face lift.

I have fond memories of this place as they let me drink in there when i was 15, I also remember the thin 80's throwback of a landlord closing the curtains on all the windows at 11pm and winking at most people, letting them know theres no rush at all to leave (if you know what i mean) great days.
Rough crowds sometimes though.
Enz5060 - 22 Jan 2006 19:38
As a regular visitor to Hersham I infrequently drinkin the wtaerman arms. it is a pleasent enough pub although you can get strange looks from the regulars as an 'outsider'. But that doesn't stop me a decent pint is what I am after. One thing that would be an advantage to the pub would be a juke box.

Very glad to hear the 80's Farrah pant chap is gone.

Will be back in the country in October and will play the place a visit. Haven't been back for a good few years, usually to the Brick layers arms because Finn's beer was always a suprerior pint.

Hey. Don't judge the place on being banned from it. There is a seriously good chance that you or someone you were with rightly deserved the ban.
anonymous - 20 Jul 2005 23:59
When I was 16 I saw a man's head repeatedly stamped on outside this pub and have been wary of it ever since. The former landlord was a badly coiffured 80s mistake who would not have been out of place wearing a thin 'piano' tie. I hated that man. Am happy to try it again now I hear they have decent barmaids. I hope the food has improved too as all I can remember were the vacuum packed mild strength cheese rolls.
Woodman1977 - 11 May 2005 16:47
The new landlady is really lovely along with her smiley barmaids. Used to drink there in the late 80's. Will definitely be going more regularly as is within walking distance.
daisyduke - 9 Apr 2005 00:16
wehn you need a desent pint of stela, this is the place to go. a pal of mine was banned before for fighting, hopfully we will be let back in, once he gets out of the nick.
shussett - 29 Mar 2005 09:42
its alovely pub with an open fire to warm you up on these cold evenings.i used to go to the watermans before it was taken over by the new land lady, who has put anew lease of life in the old place
i have only recently gone back in there and its still the same as ever, the changes have been simple but affective new flooring, glamours evening barmaids, and a very warm and inviting atmospher.i was very suprised to find all the old regulars in there and after talking to afew old mtes in there they are all very happy with whats changed.i would like to say well done to the blenkinsop family for making me relise why i liked the pub in the first place.
alan wilkinson - 13 Feb 2005 15:52
give the pub a chance you can't just ban people because they were banned before. They need to do something wrong first!!! don't you give second chances?

My wife and i had visited the pub before Anthony took over and was not made welcome at all, in-fact we felt like outsiders. We heard there was a new landlord and decided to give it another try, we were made very welcome, and as soon as the landlord realised that we liked darts, installed a new dartboard with an excellent throw. Everytime we go in there now new work is being carried out to improve the facilities. People we didn't know have joined in and had a good fun evening of darts with us. The staff are always very welcoming and although we do not go there every day have not seen or heard of any trouble so the landlord can hardly ban people for behaving. If you feel like this perhaps your the one that shouln't use the pub. My wife feels so comfortable she actually said she could pop in there for a drink on her own and would feel perfectly at ease.
Good luck Anthony and we will see you soon for another great evening.

me happy bunny - 6 Sep 2004 20:41
The Beer Price was not my main issue, What I really was sad about was the qualaty of the stela and how it looked like and ice cream with a huge head on it also i would like to know why people who Chris barred are now aloud into the pub?
A not Happy Bunny - 28 Jun 2004 18:16
Having actually worked for both Chris and now Nicky & Tony, I can say to 'A not a happy bunny' that the prices have not gone up since Chris has left, the prices had gone up in the budget as most pubs would have done. Plus we're still not the most expensive pub in Hersham, I think they know who they are! It's a shame you can't actually put your real name down!!!
Tina - 4 Jun 2004 17:21
I went down to the Watermans Pub again as recommended and I can clearly see it has not changed, It is still full of all the people Chris had previously Barred in there in the past. That is all I have to say on the Matter. A not happy Bunny! P.S and the prices have gone up for worse quality beer!
A not Happy Bunny - 26 May 2004 13:57
What a great pub.( you know what I am saying)
Mick - 19 May 2004 12:03
Well done Ken, thanks for standing by up for the pub. Good luck to Nicola, Katie and Antony from the original bar staff that are still with you.
Tina - 19 May 2004 09:49
I have read the comments from bearman & geoff with interest, as a local businessman I have over the past 25 years used the Watermans both lunchtimes and evenings and have never been quizzed by anyone, nor can I remember any Karaoke evenings! There is NO large screen TV, but a new landlord more in the style of the original "Mine Host" the changes can be seen the moment you walk in, there is still good food available, new friendly staff and signs of refurbishment are underway. Dont pass this pub by, call in and enjoy a glass of fine beer, not a trip to the Bricklayers Arms.
kmj47 - 18 May 2004 07:10
Everyone will be glade to know that the watermans is under new management, yes chris is gone, i am one of the new bar maids there we have only just taken it over, so the improvement are being done at this very moment. it will be the new place to be in hersham if you don't beleive me come and see for your self, so all im asking is for Geoff and Bearman to come along and hopefully there minds will be changed.
katie blenkinsop - [email protected] - 17 May 2004 21:01
I have lived in the area for 40 years, and this pub, despite its village green location, is terrible. The landlord, Chris, staff, and customers are the most unfriendly people you could meet. You will quite likely be quizzed on how long you've lived in the area, and may well get to see some of the locals have a punch up "on the green". If someone would run this place properly it could be a goldmine, until then, avoid!
