please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sadly gone for good. It's now a drive-through MacDonalds. The listed frontage has been preserved.

There will also be another rally outside the Tumbledown on December 1st at 1pm to demonstrate the strength of the local community to the loss of their community pub.

Is this yet another one of Paul Thomas's pubs to die a death like the Prince of Wales in Aldershot, Wyvern in Church Crookham etc ....... Perhaps Punch should get better Business Relationship Managers - ones that have a clue about building the business and not knocking off £20k of annual rent for........
katieb - 13 Nov 2012 00:35
Not dead, just in a coma. Punch tavern are still paying rent to the property company landlords so there is still hope. People who would like to see it re-open need to put pressure on the council to act.

Sadly this is not going to be the new "Wetherspoons", that is going in under the new hotel near sainsburys.
salty64 - 29 May 2010 14:05
Sadly still boarded up, no news on if or when this could open again, the future at the moment looks very bleak for this great music venue/pub. :o(
salty64 - 11 Dec 2009 18:37
What's the latest?
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 10 Aug 2008 17:04
Closed. Boarded up. Gone. Another pub dies in Farnborough. . . .
slugbreff - 2 Jul 2008 17:04
Latest word on the street is that this could well be a "Wetherspoons" in the not to distsant future.
salty64 - 19 May 2008 19:07
Apparently Yates have bought it (well that's the local rumour).
Dan137 - 18 May 2008 00:40
was an awesome rock bar with a hit an miss club venue (ie: not always rock in the club, but thats just my preference) hopefully the refurb will not kill the old style of the place
anonymous - 9 Mar 2008 11:47
The Tumbledown is closed for refurbishment, until about September apparently. Boooo :-(
jason - 18 Feb 2008 16:15
No real ale. A great deal of attention was paid to my pint of Guinness. Interesting clientele, lots of pseudo hippy types.
GazzaTheBeerMan - 17 Dec 2007 11:07
The live music venue is not a place to have a drink if you like anything different from Kronenbourg and spirits. Unless of course you fancy paying about 2.60 for a Red Bull? Drinks don't matter though because the music will absorb your concentration too much for you to even think about it!

As a pub is quite friendly and seems to have changed quite a lot over the past two years.
Will2 - 9 Oct 2007 12:47
There is a big room at the back where the music is held but you have to wander down the road a bit to get in as it's run as a seperate venue
deadbunny - 17 Sep 2007 00:59
Baffled by the 'live music' which is meant to take place here. They claim it takes place but does not seem very obvious. Unless the music is played in a special room?
aleman - 10 Aug 2007 11:00
Good music venue - lousy lunch! It has been cleaned up a bit and actually has one side of the room (split down the middle!) as no-smoking.

The staff are always friendly and are fascinatingly decorated :-)
slugbreff - 22 Jan 2007 15:38
Not the best decorated. However staff are friendly and if you like the rock scene - well worth a visit. One of the better pubs in Farnborough.

Some great historic yarn about Dick Turpin to note, to be fair it may not have changed much since his time either. Staff always good even though beer and food is of a much lower standard. This is a music venue more than local boozer so get in the right frame of mind and enjoy. Yes lots of metal & tats but that's only on the surface, bit like the pub rough looking but comfortable to be in. Avoid if you want a nice beer and dive straight in for cover bands and local groups.

This isn't really my kind of place, it's shabby without the chic. The decor is Ummm... "interesting", but not retro enough to be cool. Unpretentious is the best word for it I think.

However, the place seems well run. The friendly staff appear very capable, and the regulars weren't as cliquey as they seemed on first acquaintance. There was a great mix of ages and a large preponderance of black clothing. (But that may have been due to the bands playing.) It's also very women friendly - we felt totally at home and safe here which is not something I can say about all pubs I am afraid.

We went to see a friends band play and had a perfectly riotous night. I'd go back again in a shot.

It's quite refreshing to go into a proper pub with lifelong regulars who welcome new faces, and we love that it hasn't been given a chav makeover by the brewery. Excellent.

Tumbledown by name, tumbledown by nature.

In an age of crass commercialism where character is oft replaced by shallow & sterile mass-market blandness, then the Tumbledown Dick should be celebrated for dodging the populist searchlight.

The beer is OK, so have a Guiness, a bottle of Newcastle or a cider. The decor is tired but the atmosphere is friendly & genuine, the staff are great and the jukebox reflects the raw charm of the metal/ goth/ punk/ alternative clientelle.

This place hasn't been raided for many years, so ignore the sensationalists, leave your pretentions at home and enjoy the music & banter at one of the last remaining true old English pubs.

Pretty basic range of beer available and the food is totally average. However, they do have an excellent selection of tunes on the jukebox which in my opinion makes up for the poor decor, furry staff and underwater toilets.

As for Quarantine, well, it's the Agin Court on Friday night except that the bouncers are twice as nasty and 1/2 as clever.
alan_kebab - 28 Dec 2005 12:47
Some people have a strange idea of friendly. Maybe it's a case of getting used to it. The metallers who tend to frequent here act a bit more normal. Notorious locally for its live music on Saturday nights. Beer range a bit basic but it seems the music is what it's about

Will2 - 11 Nov 2005 19:26
I am not so sure about the friendly atmosphere that fattyboombatty is talking about! the pub seems good in some ways, very musical orientated pub and a nice guinness. Though the people in here may come across as a tad aggressive, quite intimidating!
aleman - 6 Nov 2005 01:43
Much better than it seems on first sight. Shabby but friendly and comfortable.
jason - 10 Aug 2005 17:52
This place should have been burnt down long ago. At least then it would kill the anthrax growing in the carpets. Great pub for keeping normal Farnborough gypsies out of your face, but still rubbish. If I strolled in wearing a bright T-shirt I get growled at by the bearded gnome behind the bar. A mecca for metalers and thier anorexic spouses, used to be good when the dive bar was still going, quarantine? do me a favour, exclusion zone more like.
Cidermaster - 13 Jul 2005 12:52
The place is run down and shabby, The pool tables are hilariously unpredictable and the taste of the Kronie varies from day to day. :) But all that just adds to the character of this pub. The bar staff are cool people, and the jukebox is full of alternative music. There's an excellent atmosphere on thursday friday and saturday nights. Not to mention the numerous great nights out to be had in the Quarantine club. Farnborough Kebab&Burger is an ideal place for post pub food too.

This pub is an island in a sea of townies and Chav's, and if any come in, you just put some Slipknot or RATM on the Jukebox and they soon head for the door. I'd recommend this pub to anyone except those who demand a big range of cocktails and shots, although Simon does make a good squashed frog.
baz2005 - 6 May 2005 14:52
I have to agree with most of these comments. It's not the cleanest or trendiest of drinking holes, but certainly got a decent selection of music, very friendly atmosphere, and resonably priced beer.
On about my 3rd time in there, the girl behind the bar knew my name and my beverage of choice.
FattyBoombatty - 26 Oct 2004 14:57
this pub rules; the staff are al really friendly as are the locals, the music is cool, and the nights down quarantine(including live ones) rule also.
*smeevee* - 21 Oct 2004 14:36
Not my kind of pub, but I haven't been greeted in such a friendly manner in any other pub before. No pikeys - yay!
F'boro folk - 25 Sep 2004 23:00
As pointed out - most pubs in Farnborough are drinking holes for Pikeys so the fact that the disenchanted teenagers of middle class london communitors choose this as there place to express themselves means that though the 'theme' of the tumbly is goth/metal/run down pub the people are more likely NOT to drag you into the car park and beat you up....as I remember it from my days at the sixth form college they always managed to keep the Newcastle Brown Ale cold so it cant be all bad....
ex F/boro Boy - 21 Jul 2004 16:07
This is one of my favourite pubs! Most of all, the people are really friendly, and if you've been there more than once, the bar staff will know your name! The jukebox is mainly aimed at those with an alternative music taste, but thats a plus point... there are a hell of a lot less fights breaking out at the tumbly than any place that attracts the pikeys of farnborough.
anonymous - 7 Jun 2004 14:27
Dank and smelly, with a good jukebox - what else do you need?
The quarantine club night on fridays is a good laugh, with friendly people and not a 'ben sherman' shirt in sight. Best venue in the area.
Marek - 2 Jun 2004 22:51
Come off it! This is one of the worst pubs in the south of England! Obviously there must be one person who likes the place, but there are a good deal more that think it sucks. We live in a democracy, so everybody should be able to express their opinion, but don't distort the facts with mis-guided loyalty. This is a dirty, badly kept hole. Chaz has summed it up very well with the statement "Don't expect the time of your life"! To say that this is even in the same league as most of the other pubs in Farnborough, let alone in anything like pole position, is an insult to the other pubs as well as the drinking public at large. I'm not so sure that people will travel any distance to visit the Tumbledown, cos I'm bloody sure this hole does not attract the vast majority of the inhabitants of Farnborough, most of whom have taste!
anonymous - 7 Apr 2004 12:13
One of the better pubs in Farnborough
anonymous - 23 Mar 2004 11:38
I Think Chaz has got the place pretty well taped. If a pub has to list being nearby a kebab shop as its major plus point then it can't really be up to much! Great place if you want to drink warm beer in shabby surroundings that haven't seen a hoover for years on ripped seats with load music of dubious quality, otherwise try the whimpy in town for decent food! Beware police raids!
Pete - 21 Mar 2004 13:31
Chaz has got it all wrong and maybe should try places like bar med?

This is a good pub, friendly people and bar staff, not too expensive and a good variety of music on the juke box
anonymous - 18 Mar 2004 17:43
Cliquey pub full of 'alternative' middle-class types basking in how 'rock' they are.
Apalling, over-priced and cramped rock-club on a Friday night.

Don't expect the time of your life.

Good points include quite a few pool tables and table football, jukeboxes in both rooms.
Chaz - 7 Mar 2004 16:19
Known as a goth/alternative hangout this is a great pub - cheap, good food, pool table, giant Connect 4 (!) and a decent beer garden, and situated a stumble away from the kebab shop. Usually decent music, with guitars, and the pub also has its own club next door playing metal and rock, and hosts regular gigs.
The Good Doctor - 10 Jan 2004 17:37
