user reviews of the Chelsea Ram, Chelsea

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went in here before a match at nearby Stamford Bridge. A somewhat gentrified pub serving gastro grub to a largely well-to-do customer base even on a matchday. I suppose it is befitting of the area. That said the pub maintains some charms and keeps a reasonable selection of drinks albeit at higher end prices. I wouldn't go out of my way again to visit the Ram however my visit wasn't by any means too bad under the circumstances. Average.

Odd place, a bit like watching TV in your Nan's living room... all floral and twee. Had a pint of Pride, well several actually... poured well enough, service was ok, so worth staying as we had a table in what was a very busy night. Can't complain all in all... just a bit too flowery in decor.

Just opened after a refurb by the new management team (Geronimo).

Decor. Laura Ashley circa 1993. In a word, horrible.

Staff. New manager has all the charm and people skills of a Latin American staff torturer.

Beer. No longer doing Ramrod in bottles. Young's bitter and guest ales in very bad condition.

Atmosphere: Awful. Staff have gone from happy and relaxed to stressed and taciturn (mainly due to the overly aggressive shrew who is now running the place).

Food: I wouldn't know. Myself and wife and child were turned away on the first evening due to lack of covers.

It's an awful thing when your local gets ruined. The Chelsea Ram has gone from being a quirky mixture of local boozer and gastro-pub to being a bland, mercenary chain pub. After 12 years as a regular I shall be voting with my feet.

Good-looking pub in a respectable area. Food is good, in the pricy-for-the-quantity bracket though. Drinks prices are pretty obscene. 4.95 for a pint of Peroni?? It's only lager! The ale is fine - but pint of Young's 3.80; not the way forward for a repeat visit.

Classy Young's pub tucked away off Lots Road, but reflected in its prices.Beer quality good and consistent. Above average looking barmaids.

One of the better pubs to frequent before Chelsi (sic) home games

Decent enough pub tucked away on the side streets but worth a short detour to check out. Comforting real fire on a wet and windy night and friendly staff.
There's a large front bar with large chunky wooden tables, and a smaller, cosier rear area more geared up for eating. There's board games and books on the shelves for you to use, and a number of pictures adorning the wall, most of them for sale presumably by local artists/photographers. Small TV above the door but this wasn't intrusive.
I agree with some of the other comments about the prices, we paid 6.20 for a pint and a half.
Beers were just Bombadier and Young's bitter. Ciders were Addlestones and Strongbow.

Tried this pub on a Saturday evening after watching Chelsea win yet another game at the bridge! Seemed to be a good choice as it's on the way to the new railway station at Imperial Wharf.

Have to agree with other comments about having to pay 3.40 for a pint of youngs but then you're paying for the area I suppose and was disapointed not to see other youngs beers on sale as it was a wet afternoon so a pint of winters warmers would have gone down well!

Otherwise okay pub

Nice Chelsea location near to Lots Road power station. It's also convenient for Stamford Bridge. The interior caters mainly for diners. There are several huge tables that would be good for large groups. The beer selection was the usual Youngs range - Young's Bitter, Bombardier and Directors. I left feeling a little disappointed. This is not really a drinkers' pub.
blue_scrumpy - 26 Apr 2009 19:34
The pub is in the typical Young's 'smart pub' style; it's nice enough but I prefer their 'old man's pub' look. I can't be the only person who thinks 3.40 for a pint of bitter is a bit steep either.

Have been here for several Sunday lunches. Good food and nice atmosphere, not too crowded. Recommended.

This used to be the best pub in the area.........and now it isn't........there you go!

Visited the Ram yesterday after an absence of 4 years and was very impressed with the staff, range of drinks and especially the food.
They have got the blend of gastro and normal pub just about right I think, and 11 for a tasty and generous serving of Roast Pork is spot on.

As the place is tucked away, there is not much passing traffic in the way of punters so it was a little quiet for a sunday lunchtime but this in no way detracted from an impressive experience.

Why can't all pubs be like this?

Popped in on a recommendation and was immediately impressed. Light and airy bar, plenty of staff and a good range of beers. Enjoyed an excellent pub lunch and a few pints.

My girlfriend introduced me to the Ram...I was quite annoyed, as I like to be the finder of good boozers. The staff are always chirpy, convivial and really understand how to run a strong, pacey bar. I do not understand the tosh comment either - I have always been more than happy with the food, and I like the fact that I can grab Peroni on tap, in addition to the well kept Youngs and occasional guest beer. A bit Sloaney, but come on, what do you expect! Great pub, nice punters, lovely staff, decent grub...look forward to popping in again soon.

Had lunch in the Chelsea Ram - it was perfect!
Liam and his team (especially the blondes) have got the service almost to perfection and the quality of the food is second to none!

It is a lovely pub and a pleasure to be in.
I will be back.......it is a great local.

What a load of old tosh that last review was. This is my local and it could not be a more convivial, well run pub with great food and wonderful service, if it tried!
They have a new landlord - Liam - who is a breath of fresh air after their previous antipodean attempt at a manager.
a great pub, with top food.

This place thinks it is a restaurant cum local pub. As a result of its compromise it is neither. The food is unspectacular, the beer tastes of arsenic and the clidentele are insufferable. Typically few are from Chelsea and all wish they were. Could they all please stay at home?! However a half talented landlord could turn this place into something good. All is not lost.
Cossack - 20 Mar 2007 01:48
Yet another splendid lunch! Pint of Youngs Special, fish 'n chips, banoffie pie & coffee. Service easily the best, pubwise, in London. Food cooked to perfection - the beer-batter on the fish defies description.
Their antipodean staff must be hand picked especially as most other pubs now offer service with a snarl rather than with a smile.
Will be back again very soon!
almost_an_old_git - 15 Mar 2007 16:56
This pub is worth finding, a great atmosphere and the food is very good. On my last visit I couldn't resist the fish special or the dessert menu!
sarahlm - 29 Jan 2007 18:25
BEST Sunday roast I have ever had in a pub.
Sweeps - 27 Jan 2007 20:31
Really top back street local.
bionicdog - 9 Aug 2006 11:34
An excellent pint of Young's Special and an open wireless connection; I'm happy.
ash - 3 Jul 2006 20:52
Not as special as it used to be, but will always have the name & reputation it once deserved.

As for 'KilgoreTrout'...Henry has been gone for almost a month now, so I don't know what eye candy you are talking about! Still worth a stop by though.
anonymous - 25 Jun 2006 23:08
Brilliant! And Henry is a hottie!
KilgoreTrout - 25 Jun 2006 14:07
A splendid pint of "Special"; Bangers & Mash + Fish 'n Chips. Chocolate & Cherry Pud with Vanilla Ice Cream. Filter coffee. Absolute perfection! Superb service and a good selection of Youngs beers. The Menu is varied and beautifully cooked / presented. Of particular interest is the 'specials' board which lists 6 or 7 dishes and a selection of 'starters'. It does, however, get very busy at lunch time. It's advisable to arrive before 12.30 to ensure a choice of tables. Non-smoking area near to loos which are accessed through a 'bookshelf' !
Worth a visit but I suggest you avoid Chelsea 'Home' match days for obvious reasons.
almost_an_old_git - 7 Dec 2005 19:24
yeah this place is the best local - basically because it doesn't need to try with gimmicks etc. Its a good pub with good beers and friendly staff (which should be enough in itself) but couple this with the fact the food is great too - brilliant! It does get busy at lunchtimes though (as expected) and its advisable to book.... oh and they've started doing a quiz once a month too!
jaminneb - 23 May 2005 10:57
Went there at the w/end. Henry - their new manager - looked after us superbly. Food was as good as can get in a gastro-pub, and the overall level of staff was a delight!
I will definately be back.
anonymous - 9 Mar 2005 22:40
We went there just before CHristmas, and the landlord organised tables for our large group especially. Food was second to none on the gastro-grub circuit, and the beers - especially the Winter Warmer - was superb. Staff all pretty slick too - polite, and not too in your face. A great pub - I'd definitely go again. Possibly avoid on Chelsea FC match days though - gets swamped by football thugs.
PDS - 14 Jan 2005 14:38
a very residential book kind of place you can go and everyone knows your name and you know theirs, food is fantastic, one of the best pubs in london, i have been going for ten years now! 10/10
Helen - 30 Apr 2004 13:35
One of the best pubs around. Can highly recomend the food and as it is a Youngs pub the beer is good to. A great crowd from all over descend om it especially a good young crowd. Having some minor work done in the New Year so should be even better.
