Small pub with 3 or 4 draft beers, TV, and a food menu (untried), conveniently located half way between Caversham center and Reading station (north exit).

I'm not sure if this is a pub that serves Thai food or a Thai restaurant that serves ale. On our Tuesday afternoon visit, it felt slightly more like a pub with only fellow drinkers and no diners. 4 ales were on - Sharps Doom Bar, Wadworth Dirty Rucker & Wells Bombardier & Bombardier Burning Gold. We went for the Wadworth ale, which wasn't the best. We might have tried a curry. But the specials didn't start until 6pm and there were better pubs awaiting us elsewhere in Reading.

Grangoo has it spot on. From the outside, it looked like a wonderful pub - obviously had a bit of money spent on it. From the inside, its a Thai restaurant. Having walked in, it would have been rude to walk out, so I had a Brakspear Bitter. Wonderful colour but chilled to within an inch of its life. Its rather a shame I had eaten, otherwise I would have been tempted.

Not sure if the Moderation is a pub or the Bangkok branch of Laura Ashley. Lots of Buddhas, leopard print and orchids. Some nice sensitive chaps were enjoying rugger whilst reading the broadsheets. Jumpers round shoulders and doing crosswords. I ordered a pint and spent half an hour being utterly baffled. I still am. Probably a great pub if you are Laurence Llewelyn Bowen.

I'm going to miss the Mod so much! It's my local but I'm moving away. It's a really really great pub. When you first walk in you might think the decor's a bit odd for a pub but once you get past that, the atmosphere's wonderful, everyone seems happy and friendly. Most of the time when I go it's full but not so full you can't find a table, and the oustide space is lovely too. The food is great - especially the thai food, the beer (I've heard, I don't drink beer) is good quality and I have a good time every single time I go there. The quiz on a Sunday is tons of fun, and does a really good job of staving off those back to work blues. I hope I find an equivalent...

Adore this pub. Great food, and great value with different offers on each night of the week, e.g. Ruby Tuesday = Thai curry and a Tiger beer/glass of wine for 6! Smart interior and lovely bar staff.

I'm a fan of the Mod. The food is usually good, reasonably priced for its quantity and quality. Every time I've been there, the beer is good and the garden is great on a warm evening.

Same owners as the Lyndhurst and the Warwick Arms, used to have the Spring near Theale. Not a grungy pub with a big telly, but if you're going out in a group, it fits the bill well.

Doesn't feel at all like a pub to me. Has very little atmosphere and the beer has been of dubious quality on each of the three occasions that I've visited. Certainly wouldn't rush back.

This is (now) a great, friendly little pub. Whatever horrors it used to house, which was before I lived in Reading seem to be long gone. Yes it has the leather sofa trappings of a wine bar, but only a couple of them, and it happens to have really well kept beer, better than many in Reading, and is a great place for us to take non-ale-drinking friends where we can all be happy.
Only reason I haven't given it a 10 was because we haven't managed to eat here yet, but the food looks great. Must be good as both times we have tried to eat here there haven't been any tables.

All polished floorboards, palm plant pots, black leather sofas - far too restaurant/wine bar-like for my tastes, but decent real ale on, including a very decent and rare-for-the-area beer from Rugby. Thai food and barstaff. May call back again to sample the food, but not really a typical pub as such. For all that, it's still, much, much, MUCH better than some of its previous incarnations.

This pub was a good local a few years' back but judging by the comments, had declined. A brave effort to revitalize the place has fallen foul of the tenets of focus group Britain, with lots of anodyne light wood, men in checked shirts and plenty of fake tan. Why didn't they go a step further and provide a hair straightening service for free?

Tremendous. Beer is good, food is good, atmosphere is good. And there are games to boot.

Platic tit sparklers removed, beer quality very good (decent range too - Bath Barnstormer was lovely a few weeks back).

Good service, and a good atmosphere now people have ventured in and not been hit by flying bar furntiure, as they used to expect.

You can take or leave the decor, but the beer makes it worth a visit.

What a change! Gone are the morans or have they just smartened up in response to the pub's refurbishment?
Nice food and great to see a smart pub this side of the bridge as mentioned before!

New owners (same chaps as in the Lyndhurst) and in effect a brand new pub.

Going for a more upmarket vibe, big on food. Has a fair range of ale on but for some reason puts the evil plastic tit of a sparkler on the southern ones (why?). When it's off, the quality is good.

Dcor may not be to some tastes (some of the fabric looks like it was sourced from Bet Lynch's knicker drawer).

Worth a visit.

Has recently had a lot of money spent on it in an attempt to move it up market. Food menu looks interesting although a bit expensive for the area. 3 handpumps with regularly changing ales. Pool table removed. Enclosed beer garden should be good in the summer.

Andy Becalick, who also owns The Lyndhurst Arms in Queens Road, has taken over the pub and its been greatly improved well it wouldnt take much would it?

Cushions on benches, stripped floor, decent food and two real ales. While I was there a couple of oiks came in but were so repulsed by the great ambience and cleanliness that they backed out quietly.

This pub needs to be supported as it is the only proper pub left on this side of the bridge.

How about turning it into more housing ???

One of the worst pubs I've ever been in. Poor booze, unfriendly unhelpful staff, and you are made to feel like a criminal if you aren't a regular. There was an amusing dog in the pub when I was there, but that was about it.

McDrunk - 4 Mar 2006 11:55
A classic locals pub with loads of character. I play in a band that gets regular giggs in there. They love their rock n roll!!!!!

My local,Its a bit scary at first but once your in it a top boozer.Always something happening.Good pool table and juke box.
Daf - 1 Nov 2004 14:37
Proper tatty English boozer, excellent guiness, good barmaids. Occasional interesting debates although participants all too often half smashed...quality entertainment.
Stephen Passmore - 24 Sep 2004 15:22
best looking bar maids this side of the river though....and a great laugh on saturday nights..especially if you catch the landlord with his water gun....!!!!!

Concur with the other comment on this place and add that it is a known haunt of far right-wing sympathisers. Outsiders are definitely unwelcome except during Reading Festival when the benches outside get busy with bikers swilling poorly kept beer!
Julz - 11 Aug 2004 16:32
Dingy, smelly locals-only boozer. Newcomers definitely not welcome.

Last time I was in here there was a group of local neanderthals at the bar holding a lengthy discussion on the merits of wifebeating. They were wholeheartedly in favour. And I don't think they were joking...

Go to the Crown On The Bridge or Piper's Island instead if you're searching for a beer round this way.
