please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A pleasingly dark wood kind of place on a pleasant street amid Cheltenham's Regency finery. The ale selection is well kept but very uninspired - Doom Bar, Proper Job etc. but also Otter which was our choice on this occasion. A bevy of locals surround the bar leaving most of the rest establishment empty. Just fine - no more, no less.

Fortunately I had the presence of mind to put a reel of gaffer tape and a wad of lint in my large pockets before we set off. The pub is helpfully dimly lit, with wood-panelled walls, dark painted ceilings, and with many a cosy alcove. We managed to find a suitable chair in one of the more shadowy ones. While wife distracted her mother by holding a large tumbler of brandy to her lips, I soon had her ankles and her forearms firmly secured to the chair legs and to the armrests. The moment that the brandy was removed from the black hole-like suction of her lips, then in went the wad of lint.

We thereafter passed a very enjoyable couple of hours in this rather genial, warm-and-cosy real ale pub. I had Otter Ale and another paler one from Prescott. The only minor hindrance was the need for me to stand, and to position myself to hide the occasional re-pacification of Mother-In-Law, which involved wife removing said wad of lint from her mouth, while I hurriedly offered up the brandy tumbler, and then afterwards reversing the sequence of operations.

When the time came to leave, wife and I taped an ankle each to Mother-In-Law's, and by shoving her walking stick down the back of her coat and under her hat, with an arm each around her waist, we were able to deceive the casual observer that she was standing upright under her own will, and indeed walking in like manner. We left the pub without attracting undue attention, which is a rare pleasure indeed.

Highly recommended, eight-out-of-ten.

We will shortly be taking barking-mad mother-in-law here. Watch this space, good gentlefolk.

Very nice pub. Staff very friendly and beer good, and bar and back place to relax. Once saved me from missing a footie match too!!!!
Small but good for it perhaps. Though the stairs to the toilets are almost a form of euthanisia they are so steep! Only the black rock in wakefield are worse and they need ropes.

Not too sure about comment -'local pub for local people, but strangers get a warm welcome' ?! It sounds like Roysten Vasey

OK. Not struck greatly with it, but safe enough. Although ale through a creamer didn't help either.

I once won a turkey here in the friday evening raffle and had to carry it whilst i went clubbing. Great boozer , friendly staff and a fantastic reason not to go further into town.

Old boozer and at the top of the lower-end promenade of Cheltenham...can get quite crowded and is expensive , but you do drink in beautiful surroundings especially in the summer where you can sit outside and do some people watching while getting a few down you.

What can I say? 30 yards from my door, friendly staff, friendly customers, and 1.84 a pint. No wonder I never seem to get further into town...

What an excellent boozer! Except for the cash machine, wots that all about?? Apart from that, Prices are good and the staff are friendly, lets hope the place does not change with the times, as its the only working mans pub in the area.

decent local boozer, decent staff, decent beer, bossy bosses. This pub is in danger of alienating the hard core of long-standing locals, so if you want to keep this local pub for local people, get in there now. Visitors will get a friendly welcome.

It's a pub.

Decent prices (given the location), no pretentions, friendly clientele, even friendly staff.

Excellent annual conker championship seems to have gone AWOL though.

Unlike the pretentious Montpellier Winebar behind it,
1. you don't need to be swinging a set of BMW keys to get served.
2. The mutton is dressed as mutton.
Hasn't changed in years and doesn't need to. Small but perfectly formed.
