ARHH the dear old griffin seems like i was the the only supporter of this pub and now due to no fault of the pub I cant go anymore but hey it gives someone else a chance to wright some reveiws

Yes the griffin is a little old fashioned but that gives it a nice charm, I have no connection with the pub other than being a regular but they do keep some nice ales and I personaly dont think they are over-priced, food isnt a strong point but 'hey' its not a foody pub if you want that you are in the wrong place! check out the griffins own ale called super bmw it is a wonderfull pint and they do some cracking local pork pies and cheeses for nibbles.

My first visit for a number of years. My wife and I had a lunchtime meal which was just about edable not very impressed. The beer was good but overpriced. We will not be going back.

Not since the mid 90's have I been to a pub that closed at 3pm

This pub is going downhill....the beer is getting very expensive, approaching London prices.

It badly needs a re vamp and there seems to be more and more dogs there every time I go in. There are regular scraps between these mutts and I even saw one throw up under a table. Very off putting.

well once again I shall make a comment on the griffin, if you are a real ale drinker this pub is mecca, me and my mates come to this pub every wednesday night, I disagree with snarling_mallard, us regulars are not all about 70 ! and there are quite a few younger customers.

check out the griffin beer festival each year.

love the pub and the beer

The Prices being charged at this pub for a pint are now becoming obscene.
nothing has been spent on the building, toilets, or the grounds in twenty years there is always a good choice of ale but if you are happy to be ripped of then go for it

On first approach one would not agree with a lot of the superlatives previous posters have used to describe this pub. It is a nice old fashioned kind of a place though nothing spectacular archictecturally and younger folk may be discoruaged by being surrounded by a clientelle who's average age appears to be around 70. However, if you like proper beer it is highly unlikely you would contain yourself to a pint or two (so not advisable to bring the car). The house brewery's "'ere it is" was exceptional as was the RCH Pitchfork. A total of 10 beers on offer along with local honey and eggs (which were being boxed on the bar as I was supping) and three varieties of scratchings (for those of that persuasion) make this place worth a visit. The 717 bus from Birmingham Airport to Nuneaton will drop you right outside but there isn't a recognised stop so let the driver know well beforehand as it is on a bit of a precarious bend.

Like "LittlefamilyFish", I used to come here regularly in the late 80s and early 90s - the pub is conveniently placed for the M6/M42 and meeting friends coming from elsewhere around the Midlands. Coming back this year after a gap of some 10-15 years, it was good to see that the pub has maintained, even improved, its standards. Helpful staff, fine beers (of varying gravities for all tastes, including the pub's own "Terry the Tent" and guests such as the dangerously drinkable Baz's Bonce Blower from Parish) and cosy rooms with the only noise coming from good conversation. Plenty of parking but take a second look leaving/entering the car park - the right-angle bend right by the pub makes one vulnerable to less careful drivers on the B4116

Great Pub,always a great selection of ales and wines available. eggs and cheeses also for sale, food is available lunchtimes only. Evenings are a treat especially wintertimes as open woodburners are always on the go. Price of a pint here is heading toward London pricing why? but worth a visit.

Back in the 80's I used to travel out from Coventry to this pub for the great range of beers, the unspoilt building & friendly atmosphere. I've since left the area but last weekend was passing so paid my first visit for about 20 years and I'm pleased to report little has changed, although I don't remember the conservatory being there before. The range of cask ales was excellent and the beers in top condition, although a bit pricey. The huge inglenook fireplace is still there as is the large outdoor seating area. Unfortunately another thing that hasn't been modernised is the opening times and on a busy, sunny Sunday afternoon they closed the bar at 3pm, not to re-open until evening. Will remember to arrive earlier next visit.

the only problem with the griffin is it knows its good and charges on this basis. however once you have saved up enough coppers to be allowed in it amazing.
mybeerlove - 9 Aug 2009 23:22
I agree with phil, the griffin is a superb real ale pub that will take some beating, the landlord 'mike 'is really friendly and keeps some exelent ales, the griffin Black magic woman or BMW as it now seems to be known is superb, The list of exelent ales here is endless, Exmoor gold, Witches brew, Old hooky, Sarah hughes, Dune bah.......it just goes on......
Oh and check out the pork pies, and chilli chease.

An excellent Pub for the range of real ales, the helpfulness of the staff, the friendliness of the regulars and the terrific atmosphere.
Marstons Pedigree best I have tasted. All other beers I tried very weel kept (Pitchfork, Jaipur and Old Hooky).
Lack of meals in the evening enhances genuine pub atmosphere.
Best pub I have been in.

I have only recently discovered the Griffin after years of trawling the local area for good pubs and I was plesently suprised. Not only does it have possibly the best selection of real ales in the area, the atmosphere is of true English countryside pub. Something the Americans come looking for but rarely find, let alone us Brits in the present age.

I am yet to sample the food but as long as they have a steak pie or a good sarnie then my rating for this pub remains at 10.

Oh and also they have a great collection of beermats attached to the beams, and if you are like me, you will find it very interesting. It took me a few good pints/hours to pick my favourite mat.

P.S Try the black magic women, its a dark ale (which i am normally not that fond of) that is surpassed by non. Also nice name, thanks Santana.

There is no greater drinking establishment I've yet discovered! The Griffin Inn, is a truly unique drinking experience with some fine ales; in particular Theakstons Old Peculiar and my particular favourite Sarah Hughes' Dark Ruby. An absolute must!!!

Have been a regular at this pub for over 10 years. Always excellent beers and at least 10 real ales, my favourite being pendles witches brew. The staff are friendly and welcoming and always up for a laugh. I eat there regularly at dinner times and find the meals to be really good value for money. Me and an old school friend have travelled to pubs all over the country but are still yet to find a better one. I hope i'll be drinking here for many years to come
Phil

P.S The Griffin has now started brewing again, known as The Griffin Inn Brewery. The first brew is called "Ere it is"

The_Doc - 10 Apr 2008 13:08

Great Pub, 10 Real Ales all the time- all equally excellent, can get busy but the atmosphere is friendly and the family run pub is obvious due to the friendly staff and the walm atmosphere! Great pub would reccomend to anyone!

Excellent olde worlde pub. Now non-smoking. Good quality ales but only 8/10 given by me, because it is forbidden to taste and try the ales and the genuine freehouse still has old fashioned opening hours due to a huge influx of custom at all hours from Coleshill, where real real ale is hard to come by. Closed 230-7pm every day, including weekends. I'd still recomment the place and i'm about to cycle the 7 miles uphill shortly, to get there!

I also like this pub very much, but the staff were a bit tetchy last time, when I asked them if they mulled their own country wines. They don't, but, well, it's not obvious, is it?

Also, I went there with my wife and 9-year old at lunchtime and they don't let kids inside the bar. OK, fair enough, so we sat in the conservatory, which is the only place kids can go that isn't outside, and where they also serve food. Someone came in and lit up next to us. I was about to argue, but, sure enough, there were ashtrays on most of the tables! Weird.

It's good - a lovely atmosphere most of the time - but it could be even better.

Well would have to say that its the best pub i have ever been into.. All the staff are friendly and have knowledge on every real ale being served and thats 10! Thats right 10! All top quality as well.. I was offered by the young barmen with curly hair, obviously bit of a joker 2 c if i cld make my way around the bar.. i took up the offer as he said a free pint on the house if i was 2 make my way around! Unfortunatly i wasn't able to take up the offer as he didnt reveal to me that it was thomas sykes at about 10% on the last pull! Ahh he was a good laugh! anyway all the other barstaff seemed friendly enough 2 poke the fire and keep my drinking partners busy as i was enjoying myself drowning myself in every type of real ale i could find my friend decides he would put one of the bar maids to the test and see if she could supply him with a drink that would blow his mind.. 30 seconds later out comes a pint, it was cloudy purly because of the reason that it was 7% Westons scrumpy cider, he sat down to drink it and did enjoy it, however as he stood up he felt that his legs were not working to the full potential ( i might add that this was his first drink - we have now rejected this man from our friendship group he he) Ur probably asking yourself if you want to visit this building full of history? My answer would be yes definatly, i still have not found a better drinking hole!

Absolutely brilliant pub that has everything:

Great beer (7 or 8 handpulled ales)

Great food (big portions at reasonable prices)

ROARRING Real fire

Affable landlord

Oh yes and you can buy fresh eggs and fresh veg here too!
cobbo - 8 Oct 2006 21:39
2nd visit here and other visits by friends support the general views reflected here, 10 real ales, old hooky, pedigree, old peculiar, lots of variety, sometimes a 10.2Vol beer here, blow your mind. nuff said a great drinkers pub worth of the CAMRA Accolade.
crseel - 24 Sep 2006 12:09
Everything already said above is true !

If you like proper beer i,e real ales then this place is heaven. they have loads of variety & they know how to keep a pint.

The Pedigree is the best in the midlands - bar none!

It can get very busy at imes

in the middle of nowhere but well worth the visit.

a TOP pub

I went to The Griffin last night the first time in 10 years. Nothing had changed the same land lord, same bar maid, same eggs on the bar, same till that does not work, still excellent ale.
My favorite pub bar none !
IanFarquharson - 23 Nov 2003 20:16
No music, no TV, no food in the evenings .... just fantastic beer. A choice of around 10 real ales, changing week by week. Old Peculier always available along with a great range of others at great prices. Open fires, low beamed ceiling, lunchtime pub grub, locally produced eggs & cheese on sale! The Griffin sets the standard!
anonymous - 12 Nov 2003 23:54
Where do I begin? A classic pub with an ever changing variety of ales (normally around nine or ten at a time). Good food and a great atmosphere makes the place what it is, VERY busy at times!!! Don't ask to try thr beers though as the answer is NO!!! Friendly gaffer but he doesn't give beer away!!! Theakston's Old Peculiar always on! A bit out of the way but well worth a visit. Attracts a lot of walkers.
