Enjoyed a lunch here with some friends, an excellent pint of Harveys means I will certainly be returning. The food was good and wholesome but slightly disappointing. I feel they could, with a little extra effort, take it to a new level. My main criticism is that I consider sauces and relishes to be a personal taste, though I don't dislike thick glutinous gravy neither do I want huge quantities covering my meal. This one let down aside I enjoyed what I had to eat.

Visited The Plough at Plumpton Green on a Friday night in January whilst looking for a traditional English country pub in which to celebrate a forthcoming big birthday. Found the Harveys Old Ale to be well kept and the food to be reasonable value for money. Down to earth hostess. Pub was nicely quiet which suited my taste. All the boxes were ticked and I may well find myself taking the family back there later this month. The Plough certainly warrants a better rating than the overall 5.3/10 it currently has so 7/10 from me.

This pub does not really exude cosiness, could do with an internal refit with some nicely arranged comfortable furniture. The bar billiards table is an excellent attribute though and the pub hosts a very strong team.

This pub has recently changed hands, again. But appears to be heading in the right direction. Beautifully cooked and locally sourced food, a much improved pint of Harvey's, and live music on Sunday afternoons. The staff are friendly and welcoming, as are the new landlord and landlady.

Ordered food and sat for 45 mins before being told that the childrens meal we had ordered (small fish and chips) was not available. Suggested that child could have my meal (large fish ands chips) and I would have another main but would only pay for childs portion - was flatly told no, and if I didn't like it I could 'bugger off'. Rude owner, never go back again.

Very friendly staff, pity about the quality of the beer, especially as the only had Harvey's best on.
Huge pub, completely empty, bit obvious as why.

Food really bad, service was unbelievably awful, get your staff in smarter clothes ( if my children went out wearing the rubbish your staff were allowed to wear, i would have something to say about it!!) when you go out to eat you at least want a standard of service and food (also a bit of nice decor would not go amiss!!) the food was really one of the most tasteless and badly presented by a waitress/owner who really did not give a s***!!!
Harveys pub, i think that they should make sure their Harveys tastes good, because it was off!!! Never ever go back!!

Not been to this pub before, but decided to have lunch today as we were passing. Found the food and service excellant, prices seem to be on a par with other pubs in the area. Lovelly seating area, the staff were friendly and we did not have to long to wait for our food. The crab was great. It was also nice to find a pub that had salad as a choice on their menu. Will certainly being going back for an evening meal.

Went for lunch on a sunny day recently. Good selection of beers but considered food poor value. The ham of egg ham and chips was tasteless. Chips good but small portion. Cheese ploughmans at 8.50 (approx) was the biggest let down. The smallest piece of cheddar I have ever seen served, the plate overwhelmed with lettuce to make it look a good size. Has a large outside area for fine days but could do with smartening up. I never cease to be amazed that so many places (restaurants as well as pubs), do not realise that customers will always return if they get value for money. They will also tell their friends.
In summary, not a bad pub, but so typical of many others that can't quite make enough effort. I shan't be returning.

Food seems to have improved since my visit last year. Service a bit slow and some staff should smile a bit more. Overall, I believe that this is a value for money pub with a good choice of food on offer. Will be back.

This pub has improved greatly since my last visit. It seems to have a very good landlord at last and he and his staff (possibly family) were very welcoming. The beer (Best, Old and Armada) was in excellent condition. Will happily give a higher rating. I wish the bus service was a bit more frequent though!

Went lunch time, good food though at good food prices. Starters were excellent (especially smoked salmon). Main course was good, well presented though the portions are not over the top (which in itself is fine, we didn't want a pile-it-high place) but, for example, the lamb had a fair bit of fat, not something to complain about with a large piece, so this was a little dissapointing. Perhaps food better in the evening?

On the whole, a good find, nice service food homemade. though have to say the Sussex Ox (near Polegate) and the snowdrop in lewes both do better food (from our one trip). Will return.

Met some old friends at this Pub for Lunch in early August as never been there before and thought it was worth a try, we all had the Fish Cakes, supposedly of Salmon, Prawns, Cod and salad at 9.95. What a huge dissapointment, I could only describe it as a Fish Bomb, it was deep fried and full of deep fried fat, it was 80% made of potato and truly woeful, the salad was miniscule and tired and limp, mayoniasse surround the plate, this meal was a classic cholesterol killer five star meal, this is rather typical out of sate cooking by pubs for the great british public. What poor value for money and this meal probably only costs a pound to make as described above. Told the bar man what I thought of it, but he did not the initiative to offer a discount or a refund, so thats off the list for a re-visit, why can't Pubs like this see what they are doing wrong, improve the food out of sight and then think how many more new and repeat customers they would get, or is there so many people living in the South East that people really don't care?

Harveys Best and Olympia available at this pleasant pub..........Food is good if a tad expensive.
cirrusvfr - 18 May 2007 22:14
Yet more new owners trying to turn it into yet another restaurant but they are up against strong competion
Expensive and working knowledge of Latvian an advantage :)

Warm friendly country pub. Harveys Best and Armarda available - both in excellent condition. Good to see Nigel (ex landlord of the Sloop) running the bar.

Food looks good, if a tad expensive.

Taken over by new management, same group as The Chaser Inn, The Old Mill, The Little Brown Jug & The Mark Cross. Real ales, good pub food and roaring fires. Nice atmosphere and well worth a try!

its ok , busy on sunny weekends , little play area for the kids , not much atmosphere when its really quite , good though

Worth a look with the new owners - nicely redecorated, good staff and nice grub. Much better than the rough image it recently had. Beers good too!
villageboy - 4 Oct 2006 10:40
Sorry, Mr. anonymous, how can you relax and enjoy a meal while kids run riot? Since your post, this pub has changed hands (again!), so hopefully the new landlord will stop the alarming downward spiral this pub has suffered over the past few years. On my last two visits the beer was far too cold and the atmosphere unwelcoming. I would rate it the worst pub in Harvey's estate. However, with the new landlord, surely things can only get better.
southdown12jack - 9 Jun 2006 12:14
great food, quality beers, good friendly atmosphere especially towards families. new outside play area gives time to relax and enjoy meal while kids run riot.

This pub is awful I'm afraid. It has no atmosphere, good or otherwise, and the real ale is served so cold there's almost ice crystals in it! Does the landlord know nothing about cellarship? Steer well clear if I were you.
Get_me_some_Old_Tom - 14 Oct 2005 14:19
Now well through its refurbishment, the pub still retains its unspoilt character. Good food, reasonably priced. Roaring log fires! Harveys has finished its promo price.
DavidLove - 28 Dec 2003 12:07
Built in the 1950s, this pub has recently changed hands and has having a bit of a facelift. At present the old landlord, Reg Randall's memory lives on with the best pint of Harveys around for 2 per pint. Hurry this price is only temporary!
