Weird place but I liked it. No draught beer but a reasonable selection of bottles. Place for unusual spirits and cocktails. Wished i'd seen the four poster bed thingy upstairs sooner, might have made myself at home on it....

Although the door staff deserve credit for always being friendly. Wish I could say the same for the pretentious bar staff.

If you don't have a pair of tits attached to you then good luck getting served when its busy. I've also seen the bar staff so hammered that they are literally staggering, collecting glasses which they then proceed to drop half of one the floor, all the while having a glazed over expression on their faces. And the one who seemed to be the manager was among the most pissed. Dropping glasses left right and centre as he made drinks. Half the spirits he poured ended up on the counter. And at rush hour he seemed more pre-occupied with playing the Russian National Anthem over the speakers. Bizarre.

Great atmosphere, good selection of interesting beers from around the world. Excellent thai menu. A nice interesting place if you are still up for a slightly studenty vibe.

This was crowded and not much in the way of 'proper' beer, but I couldn't help but like this place. It was trendy without want to be 'lux', quirky and with a decent outside area. Ordered a cocktail, enjoyed the environs and moved along - was well worth the stop.

It seesm some people have some rather strong negative comments about this place or maybe their expectations are just to high. as for those who enjoyed their experiance at the Evil eye, well I totaly agree. My brother took me there not so long ago and I thought it was brilliant. Yes it took a while to get served because it was crowded but what does that tell you? that its a popular bar were every one likes to chill. The cocktails maybe pricey but lets face Evil eyes cocktails are killers. My two perconal favourates are the Brazilian monk, Long island iced tea and the Evil sun rise. The bar tenders and friendly and there is a great atmosphere.

Hate this joint. Decent cocktails sure, but what's the point if you can't get served? Have avoided like the plague for probably two years now.
droolian - 3 Apr 2010 11:29
Admittedly does great cocktails but very pretentious place; takes about 10 minutes to get a drink with all the tricks they do with the bottles, etc. Also, usually massively busy which doesn't help getting a drink. Prices are pretty high, but I guess that comes with drinking cocktails. Got some decent beer on tap, at an average price.

I thought this place was awesome! Me and my friends were doing a drinking a to z while here and were stuck on the last few letters so came here as reccommended by other pubs. The bar staff were very friendly and helped us find the last drinks we needed! They even had to get out a cocktail book to help us!
We even got a picture of all of us drinking with the staff!!

I definately plan to come here again at some point when in the area!

The Evil Eye is a fantastic venue, maybe a little overpriced. However the ageing female door supervisor is over-zealous and unpleasant, and in my opinion should not be employed in a capacity where she is dealing with the general public.

I'm going to big up the evil eye, i think it needs some praise for once! Having lived in York only a short time, this has got to be my favourite bar and has been for a good few months. food is reasonably priced and amazing, drinks menu is the most extensive I've ever seen, the bar staff certainly are very accomplished at mixing cocktails which you can enjoy in really interesting surroundings. Obviously I can't talk for everyone but I've never had to wait long for service and waiting staff are smiley too. yeah it is a little sticky in places but there are worse things. this place is definitely worth a visit

love this bar, will definetly make a point on going there on my hen night, best chocolate martinis ever, staff are friendly and so are the people who drink there. had a good afternoon there when the tills were down and they charged the same price for everything to make things easy for everyone, happy times

Used to love this place when it first opened, can't stand it now...Bar staff are the most pretentious, unfriendly people I've ever had the misfortune to be served by. Made the mistake of telling the manager the toilets needed looking at (sink not working, seats ripped off, stinking) and he basically just insulted me...It may serve good cocktails, but the nasty attitude of the staff far outweighs any enjoyment you'd get from their drinks...And I wouldn't order food here either - if the state of their toilets are anything to go by, you'd be risking a severe bout of food poisoning..

Really liked this place, as commented on before it has a really mammoth range of cocktails which i had a couple of but also a few decent bottled beers - Desperado's are really nice.

Didnt find it at all pretentious as another person commented before, in fact all the staff were friendly as were the other drinkers.

The only downside is that it can be a long wait for a drink - luckily it wasnt that busy when I went in, but a friend who lives in York said that they actually used to take drink orders and give you a time to come back to the bar to get them - i.e. go to another pub/bar for an hour then return.... crazy!

I've been here a few times and want to like it - they have a fantastic cocktail selection, and I'd recommend drinking one of these rather than a beer. They are skilled at making them but be warned it can take quite a while to get served - the bar staff have their own idea of how fast to go or who is next.

The second floor is unique with its beds and cushions - every time I've been there's been space. They offer wifi but it still doesn't work with macs, disappointing considering the booths are a great spot to get some work done on a quiet afternoon with a decent drink.

This place has potential - nice drinks, unique idea, perfect central location - but I always end up just a bit...disappointed.

This pub used to be good, been here before and thought the place was brilliant. Unfortunately me and a group of friends were there on Sunday night and the service was absolutely dire. Waited for ages as bar staff wandered past, checking out the "cool" (translate that to prententious)people to serve. Our group not being of that ilk basically were ignored (by the way we are not Chavs either!)so one of our group decided to ask why we were not being served and requested to speak to the manager who then laughed in our faces. We walked out at this point and got served in Ye Old Starre Inn next door an altogether more pleasant experience. Moral of the story is unless you are a middle class student living off Daddy's allowance don't bother going, unless you like to be insulted on a night out.

Not a bar for everyone but I love this place. This isn;t a real ale tavern or pie and a pint place, this is a place to chill out and relax and the perfec spot for a spirit or cocktail drinker.
i have rarely seem a spirit selection to rival this place, everything from Absinthe to Zubrowka and a few specials on the evil shelf.
A few coments about slow staff but I reckon that has more to do with them taking the time to make your drink well and so some top cocktails and the defining skill of a barman who makes cocktails, they are willing to recomend based on your tastes.
If you love alcohol that isn't beer, go there, your liver deserves it.
Hardcore.Stig - 14 Jun 2007 21:24
Bar staff are slow, and hardly any beers that you've heard of. Maybe that's a good thing, but it can get irritating when you have to ask for a menu just to get a beer. And no pints - just bottles. Lots of spirits and wines, however. Drinks are a bit steep, but food is good and not too expensive. Distinct lack of space in this bar.
slew - 23 Feb 2007 15:29
was cool the first time i went in. next few times not so good. the bar staff are waaaay too slow and like to serve their mates first. The staff have bad attitudes too, one swore at my friend because he couldnt hear what she ordered! And he asked me for i.d even though he just served some chick who looked like she was 12! when i did show him my id i expected to be served but he still served all his buddies before me! It's one of those place that you can tolerate once every 2 or 3 months! Serve fantastic drinks although theres that much you can barely see what they have so you just end up ordering your usual. overall, good drinks, bad staff, ok atmosphere!
city.bird - 12 Feb 2007 00:25
I swear to God the service in this place gets worse ... the miserable cow who usually works in the off license needs to learn a couple of things, most notably i) she's paid to serve customers, not faff around with her phone and read Vogue while the punters are queuing back into the bar and ii) the meaning of the words 'customer service'

I've said it before and I'll say it again: great food (especially recommend their Asian menu, if you can stand the interminable and inevitable wait) and good selection of drinks let down by piss-poor service and staff attitude.
deepwater - 4 Feb 2007 11:44
I swear to god, everyone in this pub looks like they are in The Strokes. Middle Class student pub, although I did have a nice game of Connect 4 in there.
big_baby_jesus - 18 Dec 2006 18:32
Go once, so you can say you've been, take your wife so she can have a cocktail. But don't go again. Service is way too slow, even at the "Bottled Beer Only" section. And too many students for my liking!
oneofthekingsmen - 1 Dec 2006 19:17
This is one of the only truly unique bars in York. It's a student dive primarily but everyone's welcome. The cocktails are huge and made with lots of love, and there's a MASSIVE selection of spirits on offer, although most of them are probably illegal and hand-mixed by tiny naked people from the Amazon rainforests.
The floors are dirty, the walls are peeling, but that's just part of the appeal and you'll end up loving it. The staff are all young students, all dreadlocked/shaven/dyed/tattooed/bleached/bearded, it looks like an explosion on a hippy factory, but the individual attention they give to your drinks will make you fall in love with them.
If you don't go there when you visit York, you didn't visit York at all.
steeveeweevee - 29 Oct 2006 14:56
This is always a bone of contention between myself and my girlfriend - she loves the place and I hate it.

Why do I hate it despite the fact that it does an excellent range of drinks and above average food? Simple - the service is truly, absolutely *dreadful*, even during quiet times.

Should be visited at least once, but be prepared for a long, LONG wait for service.
deepwater - 15 Oct 2006 11:55
Wide selection of drinks and cocktails. A good bar to go to before goin out to a club.

However, there tends to be a bit of snobbery on behalf of the bouncers and bar people if you turn up wearing any colour other than black. Waited over 20minutes to get served and by the time I spoke to someone it was closing.
jimmyruk - 26 Feb 2006 18:05
Still like this bar...it deserved to get more popular & has taken up extra space to do this. However I absolutely LOVED the way it used to look-when it first opened...The psychedelic rooms with the outrageous structures...The senses were assaulted so much, you felt like you'd had 10 cocktails before you'd finished the first one!
EdgarBriggsMI5 - 7 Jan 2006 22:05
The Evil eye lounge is one of the must visit bars in York. Alternatively hip and a great place to meet friends, cool music, cool staff, and cocktails to blow your mind. Only downside is its so popular that it is very busy on friday & saturday. A change of venue or maybe evil eye 2 i think.
anonymous - 8 Oct 2005 19:19
This bar is certainly an interesting place. I really enjoy the drinks and often the atmosphere, but I can also understand why many people criticise it. It can certainly get very busy, and is popular with the alternative trendy sorts. But don't let this put you off at all, the bar staff are all really friendly, they sell a truely outstanding range of cocktails, spirits and have a reasonable wine selection. This place is certainly well worth a visit so that you can make up your own mind (and check you emails while you are there).
alistair_cross - 31 May 2005 13:05
so they dont actually sell beer on tap, is packed full of people with intimidatingly cool hair and clothes who probably dont save whales or rainforests either but look at me condescendingly because it doesnt even occur to me that i should be.

Internet lives upstairs and there is some odd shop setup going on at the front that sells drunk scorpions and tea made by weasels.

It certainly isnt run of the mill.
iainyork - 15 Feb 2005 00:55
dangerous place. been there a few times and every time ive drunk myself stupid. great place though.
khaal - 28 Aug 2004 18:09

Mark - 26 Mar 2004 22:33
Its even better now they made downstairs into a bar
John - 22 Mar 2004 11:28
MEAD!!!!....Evil Eye rules!, they sell Mead, and lots of cocktails for only 3.50 .. and lots of different Absinthes!.. Usually crowded, and it's a really kewl place to go.
Scary Jeff - 21 Mar 2004 00:43
Sells Mead, which is a good thing. I've been entirely unable to find any other pub in britain which sells mead
Kieran - 19 Mar 2004 13:02
No beer.
Ian - 20 Feb 2004 20:06
The most fun pub in York, but very crowded. Full of stoners with long hair who treat you very nicely.
James - 6 Dec 2003 14:50
evil eye, the only place i can find that sells the sweet drink jaegermeister and its only 1.50 a shot- puts aftershock to shame. leave hellshots to the rich and brave.
urtdunda - 27 Oct 2003 20:51
Not your average pub, as the name suggests. Upstairs bar, above a shop. Mean cocktails, selection of bottled beers (none on tap unfortunately), lots of strange and strong spirits including several varieties of absinthe. Lively atmosphere, usually crowded, the bartenders are all characters.
