Nice enough pub, busy on a January Thursday, and with good beer.. Moongazer and Bure valley to name a few... Full of locals as well..

With the Cottage and the Plasterers Arms not yet open, we moved onto the Wig & Pen. Yesterday was my first visit to this pub, which is close to Norwich Cathedral. It's fairly small inside. A number of people were dining. 6 ales were on - St Austell Tribute, Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie, Wolf Sirius Dog Star, Lacons Saint Nick's, Woodfordes Bure Gold & Adnams Bitter.

Decent pub that does great value food. Very close to Norwich cathedral. When I called in they had great range of beers on. I had a Little Sharpie from Humpty Dumpty and then an Edith Cavell from Wolf Brewery. Both were excellent and well kept. The staff seemed friendly and very pleasant. Would certainly call back if in the area.

Nice enough pub, aside from the barman calling me 'Buddy' all the time!

Decent beer, but the reason I'd go back is the food - really top-class pub food (Steak and Ale Pie, Fish and Chips - that sort of thing) in huge portions at reasonable prices. Ideal for stomach-lining at the start of a crawl!

Nice compact pub which seemed geared up for food. I visited for the festival of dark ales which was unique and must in its self. Every beer tried was in good condition. Could not find a festival beer menu though, (not that my daughter and I are beer tickers of course) !!

I had high hopes for this place but to be honest the beer selection on offer was somewhat unimaginitve and the JHB I had was fairly unpalatable.

Smallish white-washed reasonably traditional pub in a quietish area of the city reasonably close to the cathedral.

The pub is a GBG regular and, so I'm told, one of the best known Norwich pubs.

Food appeared to play a major part when I visited, but there were 6 real ales on - London Pride, Adnams, Deuchars IPA, Mauldens, Woodforde Nog and Oakham Ales JHB.

It's quite compact inside and probably usually gets busy quickly, but there's a spacious outside drinking area on the square outside to help relieve any crush.

Not a must visit pub, but I'd probably return

The beer was fantastic, with good variety, the atmosphere was excellent, and the food was absolutely top notch. Not cheap, but good quality and excellent value. Staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the 'waitress' with the dyed red hair. Will definitely return next year, assuming no unexpected promotion/ relegation.

Straw Dog and Moonrocket beers went down well in thus busy pub. Two TV screens were a bit intrusive - especially as were showing different things.

On out tour of Norwich one wonderful place followed by another. This was no exception. Good atmosphere and beer range.

I've been going in this pub now for a number of years and the quality of the Real Ale (mainly from local breweries) is always excellent. Superb ambience with a top Landlord as well who knows what he's doing. If you fancy a snack, try the jacket wedges with chilli and cheese.............

Great range of well kept ale. Quite compact inside but has some outside seating over-looking the square.

As the name betrays, the pub is located a pebbles throw from the courts, near the Cathedral and on our luncthime visit was busy with a mixture of locals and lawyers.

A choice of five real ales when I visited most of which are local brews.

A special mention has to go to the food. Locally sourced where possible and home made, I opted for a club sandwich and received a monstrous Scooby snack

A steak, onion and Dijon mustard club sandwich, served in toasted fresh, hand cut bread with about 4 potatoes worth of chips and a fresh salad. Its no exaggeration that these three slices of bread and meat, cut in half and stacked together before being skewered to hold it together, were taller than my pint glass. At under 7 this was value in extremis.

A superb pub and a superb snack. Just be sure you havent eaten too much before you order the club sandwich. Starving yourself for three days beforehand should do the trick.

Highly recommended and will be going again next time I'm in the area.

Lovely pub near (and much more worth visting than) the Cathedral

A flying visit whilst passing as we had all been here once before. Another great Norwich pub but only a half in this pub. I think 6 hand pumps were available here. I went for Tipples Moonrocket as never seen it before and the others went for Buffy's Norwich Terrier. I made the mistake as the Buffy's Norwich Terrier was in fine form and lovely.

A lovely pub with a good choice of real ales available. Friendly staff.

lovely pub, friendly, good ales, screen sports are on but dont dominate, pub has lovely interior. nice food.

Still a top notch pub - excellent choice of 6 real ales (changing all the time) plus friendly and helpful staff. Major sporting events shown on the 2 screens at either end of the pub. And on sunny days tables and chairs are placed on the open area in front of the building. The food looks good, with an extensive specials menu, but I've never eaten there.

Ply a pub with enough LSD to trip a nunnery and the result will be an establishment like the Wig and Pen.

I cant put my phased finger on quite what makes this tucked away watering hole radiate with weirdness: it could be the twee wall adornments, carpets and furniture, the rolling silence, the slightly too jolly and spaced out staff or the clientele that can on occasion veer towards the mental (good evening Mr Loud Conversation With Himself and hello Mr All Over Face Hair). Or maybe its just that all these little scraps of quaintness come together to create an undercurrent of wackiness that makes you half expect to find a table occupied by a purple horse and a talking broom.

Still, while the W&P maybe surreal and a tad quiet, it nevertheless has character, something which cant be sniffed at when one considers how turd chains (Spoons, S&L etc) are spreading throughout the land like an STD in a whorehouse. It may be quirky, but at least its interesting. The tap selection is also first rate, with Martin R (below) providing a spot on description of an extremely wide, rotating, well kept and affordable ale selection that puts this pub into the top bracket of booze variety. And despite my smart arse comment earlier on, the staff really are a joy being not only friendly, but efficient and knowledgeable.

The W&P is therefore an above average pub that certainly is worth a visit on a regular basis. However, the environment doesnt lend itself to a pub crawl or for particularly long sessions unless youre someone who likes their bars quiet and populated by an unusual cast

Went here in Autumn 04 on a self-made crawl. Excellent Beer and very friendly staff. Hadn't got through their entire range by closing time but the barman wouldn't let me go without trying the best one I had not had - so got a free generous measure of the Adnams Hopleaf...a delight. Can't praise the place highly enough - wish I'd been around longer to try out the food!

Good beer but just a little too quaint to be believable.

very friendly staff and excellent and well kept beer.
Guest beers change often and it is best to go there fairly frequently to make sure you dont miss the really good ones.
Keep and eye out for Murphy the dog and a chap at the bar who, it is said, used to be a taster for Fullers - if he drinks there then the beer should be OK!

Near courts. Very good food, especially fish. Good range of changing beers. Ouside tables, traditional pub area and bistro area at back. Friendly staff
