user reviews of the King's Ransom, Sale

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Paid another visit on a recent weekday afternoon while in Sale.

Of the 8 pumps, 7 were on, 2 by Greene King, 2 by Morland (Golden Hen & Hoppy Hen), Butcombe Bitter, and Old Rosie by Westons. I appreciate that doesn't add up to 7, so I must have forgotten what the other one was - it obviously didn't jump out at me!

I am a fan of the Golden & Hoppy Hen ales and it was nice to see them available but as I had a couple of bottles waiting for me at home decided on the Butcome Bitter instead. Sadly it was not very inspiring, nothing wrong with it as such, just nothing to write home about.

Service was swift. Finding a seat not a problem. The booth I sat in had a massive tear in the leather seat. Some tables were full of empty plates and glasses. A few people in but not packed out.

Visited on a weekday evening. 8 pumps of which 7 were on. Went for a pint of Cornish Coast (Penpont Brewery) at 3.7%. Possibly the palest ale I have ever had, but very pleasant, lots of flavour and very refreshing.

Pub is large with a few different levels. Plenty of tables. Worth a visit!

Expensive and unwelcoming. Don't go in here if you have walking problems. There are stairs everywhere.

Quite a good selection of beers and people inside not scallified, well-presented and friendly-feeling.
When busy (weekend) you can get squeezed and it can be expensive, especially for the fact you're in sale. Also, the canal-side brings flies in summer and cold in winter, though I haven't seen any dead badgers floating by just yet

Real ale is kept well and it is reliable each week.
I visit with two friends each week following our sporting activity. The staff welcome us and they start pulling three pints of our usual real ale after greeting us.
We visit in the early evening. Lots of space to sit, good food.
I disagree with previous contributer about the beer.
The pub is centrally placed in Sale and close to the tram station to get into Manchester so it does get busy later.

Good night but does get chokka block later on into the night up to a point where you start to feel like a sardine in a can

Excellent location, brilliant for sunny days. Food is reasonable but watch out for the manager, he seems to think everyone is just using his car park to go shopping & can be quite rude about it.

Great pub, friendly atmosphere 10 out of 10!!!!!
darren01274 - 19 Jul 2007 14:46
Probably the only decent Pub with a beer garden in Sale which means it gets very very busy when the weather is fine. But all the same is good with cask ales and decent food. Beer prices are quite steep but acceptable.
LastSupper - 20 Jun 2007 16:10
Good canalside location, choice of standard real ales - might benefit from a few rarer brews. Had Speckled Hen on where I was there.

Fairly pleasant pub and staff are OK. Would say one of the better pubs in Sale.

this is the best pub in sale, food is especially special with the carvery on sunday which is soo nice the red wine gravy is homemade and very nice, they also have themed nights where they have a curry night on a wednesday which is also top class all currys are freshly made by the chefs at the ransom. the down side is the summer it is so busy and often nowhere to sit but i suppose thats as the ransom has such a good reputation for top quality food and a wide range of drinks. It is pricey but worth it you only get what you pay for.All staff a very polite and clean and always happy to help . worth a visit i will be going there again especially for sunday lunch !! GREAT PLACE

A rare outlet for Hardy and Hansons ales and was in good condition, a nice atmosphere and the staff were efficient, guy on the door was friendly, a nice outdoor area in good weather, overall a comfy pub.

I love the fact that you don't mention the METROLINK station 10 yards from the door, but tell people that Humphrey Park is a mere 2 miles away!

Transportation dysfunctionalities aside, The Kings Ransom is in truth not a bad pub. Given that Sale has attracted more than its fair share of cnuts in the last few years, due to its location and the explosion of "aprattments" (sic), the Ransom still manages to host a good mix of genuine people. Good food (particularly on a Sunday) and a pleasant atmosphere make it one of the better watering holes in Sale.

some previous comments mention the door staff being friendly, strict yes, friendly no!! they have got as much charisma as a dead fish, not been in for a while im a divorcee who got lucky and met the woman of my dreams!!got to say tho they had the best barman alive called Aki, shame he was a city fan but u cant have everything rest of the staff just goin through the motions not very friendly. As for the food only ever had Sunday lunch, one word describes it 'superb' well worth whatever they charge who cares we're only here once cant take it with u!!!!!!

I've always found the bar staff to be unfriendly and moody.

Good position by a litter-strewn canal doesn't ditract from the fact that it's quite a dull pub.
Cirrhosis - 28 Jan 2005 14:24
Always start off here with y sister on a friday where we have a drink with plenty of sparkly things, animals and umbrellas!!!!!!!!!!! Staff are really friendly pee pee the glass collector makes Elises night all the more enjoyable. Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!

Door staff are also friendly. Dont think i could spend all my night in here i just tend to go in for 1 or 2 either at the beginning or end of the night.
Katy_Hutchinson - 14 Jan 2005 16:19
Clientele is generally a different generation, food's a tad pricey, the episode with a Cher impersonator will never be forgotton...

Think the glass collectors deserve more respect, that place is always packed solid Fri and Sat nights.

Lovely bar staff though in most cases...

Good pub for thirtysomethings and upwards if you're out for loud music. There's plenty posers in this establishment. Bit of a knocking shop (divorcees/single types on the pull). Haven't tried food. Beer prices are far too high. If the drinks were cheaper I'd give it a better rating.
DJ_Dobber - 2 Jan 2005 17:58
Great, nice and cosy in the winter. I should imagine it'd be good in the summer too what with the outside seating near the river/canal.
Nige - 30 Dec 2004 20:10
Cracking pub in the summer. With its barge style seating on the canal itself outside. With speakers wired up outside also playing some classic tunes. And a large stretch of canal side running down the side of the car-park. Perfect for those hot days in Sale! The weekends are a bit too packed. Not enough seating! Good entertainment though-hence the extremely busy weekends! Hardly any Scrouts. Good door team. Brilliant Quiz night. Tasty food. A bit pricey for food and drink-but you can see why once inside. Probably the best PUB in sale.Bar-staff efficiant and generally well traineed. (Rare to find these days!) Nice and friendly, especially Sharon.
well worth popping in when in sale (if you can afford to!) Late licence over weekend.
DjLee - 28 Nov 2004 20:35
Good pub, probably the best in Sale. Look out for Bow, the man is a legend.
Chris - 16 Nov 2004 09:27
Alright pub, watched a bouncer fall down some stairs. Magic!
Si - 13 Oct 2004 12:39
Excellent Pub. Atmosphere is brilliant and there are no idiots/scallies. Service is very quick and very friendly. Late license of a weekend makes it even better.

Chris - 7 Oct 2004 22:36
The best pub in sale all year around the staff are at the highest standard of service unlike the waterside across the canel had the best time on a saturday due to having a DJ called howard lee the best you can so much fun and the doorman are at there best well controled opperation around. go and see for yourself very good night out!!!!
john gibson - 7 Oct 2004 21:23
Not brilliant but certainly the best of the rest. Hardly any scallies slip through, although there was a bit of scrap the other week. Not cheap but again keeps scallies and kids out. Gets FAR too packed on bank holidays and Xmas and that so you can't breathe which wrecks it, especially if you're surrounded by a big crowd of divorcees on the pull!
Emily - 6 Sep 2004 15:51
Lovely place, one of the best in Sale with the least trouble. As for the bouncers, the place wouldn`t be the same without them and the lack of scallies shows they do a good job.

Lovely food, friendly staff and great venue. First class.
Sers - 19 Aug 2004 15:16
cheap, tacky interior which suits a cheap, tacky pub. AVOID !

(Nothing to do with the fact I recently got clamped in their car park and had to pay 85 release fee)
tom howard - 18 Aug 2004 13:42
Great pub with great barstaff. quality ale and only scumbags seem to be the bouncers.
sarah - 30 Jul 2004 16:47
a great place to go. one of the only pubs in sale not full of kids and scallies. The doorstaff (all 5) are very strict but fair. The bar staff are friendly and know their job great beer and great food.Nice in the summer by the canal and kids are welcome till 8pm
mike - 14 May 2004 22:50
A nice place to go and enjoy a night out. Gets very busy at weekends especially in the summer when you can sit by the canal.Has Hoegarden on tap aswell food is great.Door Staff are friendly but strict. Bar staff are always very smartly dressed and friendly. All in all a great place to be.
carol and peter - 10 May 2004 16:56
great pub great place to have a safe night out not cheap but worth the extra few pence to feel safe beer is always excellent door staff are very strict but hey thats why its a safe place to go keep up the good standards
mike - 9 May 2004 21:00
Nice place, good quiz on a tuesday and the grolsch on draught is ok too.

Also have Hoegaarden on tap as far as I know.

And there's always the barge outside for a summer drink!
dpm - 1 May 2004 05:47
A pub you'd "do lunch" in or have a few lesiurely afternoon pints, particularly in the summer when you can sit by the canal.
Gets busy of an evening, the door staff can be a little particular and it ain't cheap.
The food is excellent, particularly on a Sunday, good parking and near to the station and 4-5 other pubs.
The quality of the beer is always excellent
