user reviews of Ye Olde One Bull, Bury St Edmunds

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sadly the last of only 4 pubs I had to check into during a visit last weekend - but a wise choice. Although perhaps the interior of the Bull jars somewhat with one's expectations of it from the outside, it was smart, and despite its clear orientation towards the modern and the wine-bar aesthetic, the beer is what it's all about.

Cask-wise there is an excellent spread of ale, including rare Brewshed offerings (the Pale here was simply excellent - refreshing on a hot afternoon without being anodyne). All drinnks were served efficiently and with a smile by the barmaid.

I should make mention of food too, as although I didn't take any lunch here (already stuffed myself with chicken and chips elsewhere), what I observed from both the menu and the dishes as they emerged from the kitchen looked positive. I wouldn't mind coming back some day to try it out for size.

I think there was a garden to the rear which was busy with sun-seekers, though we stayed at the front, making usage of the comfy leather seating. A great place to get 'intimate' with someone over a glass of wine or beer I'd say.

Have a care with the two floor-to-ceiling glass panels set in the wall separating the bar from the seating area though - one of our number mistook the crystal-clear glass for an open doorway and walked straight into it, happily not shattering the pane or incurring any injury (other than to his pride perhaps), but spilling lots of his beer down the glass! The barmaid swiftly attended to it as if to suggest that it might not have been the first time it had happened.

All in all, perhaps a little antiseptic for those who prefer their pubs more trad, but otherwise, a bit of a mecca for beer and grub lovers.

Had lunch here - very well presented and cheap and excellent pint of Milestone - recommended

First visit to this pub last weekend. 4 beers on, including 2 from Brewshed. The Pale Ale was excellent and just right at lunchtime. Good food, too, good service and comfortable seats. The only downside was the number of people drinking at the bar so it's difficult to get served, but to be fair, 2 chaps moved out of our way and someone passed my wife the wine list, so fair play. Why do people block the bar so much and why do staff not do something about it. A minor moan, but needs making. Overall, though, a very enjoyable pub and will be back.

As the Brewshed Brewery tap doesn't open until 1700 (the former Ipswich Arms) if you want to try the beers this is your best bet. A lovely old inn more foody but staff were friendly and happy for people just to drink. 3 Brewshed beers on offer all in good nick. About a 10 mins fast walk from Bury st Edmunds rundown and tatty station.

A very nice airey and busy pub but it does have a hotel bar feel to it as mentioned by Stallywag .3 beers on draught, a nice wine selection and the food smelt good aswell. As said above a very busy pub with a mixed but sturdy looking cliental. Definetly worth a visit along with the Beerhouse.

Disappointed that the Adnams was from a keg rather than a cask. The CO2 seems to give it that creamy head and tastelessness that you associate with John Smiths style beers.

The pub itself is pleasant enough in a kind of hotel bar kind of way - lots of sofas and mirrors. I will pop back again some time but will be more careful in my choice of drink.

After reading the reviews I went in there on Saturday evening with a few friends, as previously stated it is a very nice atmosphere, but it just seems extremely over priced. The menu is quite limited to. In my opiion It is more of a drinking establishment than a food eating one.

Visited today and love this place - had just a light lunch but quality was fantastic. Great range of continental lagers, wine range is amazing. Atmosphere was really pleasent and welcoming. If you want a pub that offers a warm welcome, great food, brilliant beer and comfortably surroundings then this is the place for you.

Excellent pub with restaurant serving great Adnams and Woodford beers with thorough and good value wine list.
Nice warm fire for winter evenings!

Went there yesterday.Had a pint of Adnams Broadside which was very tasty indeed.Lady has Aspalls cyder.Great sit down area in comfy chairs which could of been deadly after a hard days shopping! Recommended for slobbing out.Very clean place too.

Promised well, but has recently started to go downhill. Mostly given over to food (good, but overpriced), the gaff has good beer and wine and desperately wants to be thought exclusive (check the prices), but the loud, brash crowd that occasionally monopolises the bar doesn't make for a pleasant atmosphere. Staff seem to think looking pretty is enough and that clearing glasses away is beneath them.

once a pub worth visiting off the 'main drag' of Burys pub circuit, the One Bull (Ye Olde has been added in last couple of years) is now food orientated and the place to go to try and pull some older, more professional skirt at weekends.
Most pubs are heading down the food route, sure, but give me the golden era 99 to 04 anyday, when beer and great free music was the attraction to this pub.
this was where all the hardcore ravers would congregate back in the late 80's prior to going out for a dance....ah golden days!
a whiff of pretension adds to a feeling of 'been here before' sterility about this pub. There all going this way baby............

Visited in November the beer was excellent both Adams and Wherry, the staff attentive and pleasant, the food was good with reasonable sized portions. The only down side was that the vegetarian option was very poor, My friend ended up having bread and butter for his starter, mushroom risotto for his main and when he asked for the cheese board they had no blue cheeses, very disappointing !!

Had an excellent Sunday roast last week, woodfordes Wherry an exceptional pint. Staff attentive and in the right place - behind the bar! Becoming very popular on Friday and Saturday nights. Worth a visit when next in Bury St Edmunds.

The decor, furnishings and pictures look like a job lot from a Next interiors closing down sale! Not at all as I remember it from a few years back.
The staff were friendly and efficient. They had Adnams bitter and Woodforde Wherry which was Ok, if a little cold for my taste. The food had plenty of flavour, portion size was good and was well presented.

Has been done up but is almost a complete copy of Benson Blakes without the friendly staff and the food was not up to much

I went into this pub yesterday and found it completely transformed from the last time I was in here about four years ago. The pub serves two Adnams beers, best bitter and Broadside and a five lagers including Staropromen. There is an eating area away from the bar, and a coffee lounge as well. I found drinking in here a pleasant experience and hope to sample the food menu in the coming weeks.

Had a lot of work done recently, but something of the character has been lost along the way. Pub is steeped in history but now has the feel of a chain about it.
Shame.

The only pub i know that you can smell the toilets as soon as you walk in the door. Due to be done up soon. Hopefully that includes little pineapple cubes for toilets.

Not a bad place for a late drink. Tends to be quite busy with excellent music. Always stop in when I'm in Bury.

Looking very shabby now. Went in for a drink recently and they had no wine !!!

Amazing old building given a 'theme' back in 1997, pretty average when I was last there. Popular with townies but not as bad as it was 10 years ago.
