user reviews of the Red Hart, Hitchin

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Has been subject of a refurb relatively recently, good pub grub but since they got rid of the jukebox not a place on my drinking list and with it being Greene King, it serves terrible ale and cider on draught.

Chavved-up former coaching inn. The only "ale" on offer is the dire Greene King IPA. If you want to drink outside in the sun (does anyone WANT to drink IPA?) you are obliged to do so in what is basically the car park at filthy and graffiti'd tables. One to avoid.

It's all been cleaned up! Still the same dodgy looking customers, but lovely wing-back chairs, and carpet.

Looks quite nice from the outside, so went in. Got told in an incredibly grumpy tone that they don't accept card payments for anything. Left immediately. A load of rubbish, and plenty of better pub choices around Hitchin.

This is the traditional pub in Hitchin where all youngsters first go to drink when they are old enough...or even not quite old enough but think they can get away with it. The landlord turns a blind eye, as does the police as at least they are all in the same place where they can keep an eye on them. I am a bit old for the place now but I still have a soft spot for it. Run down it might be but every town needs a pub like this. It is where young drinkers cut their teeth before moving on. And it has a great jukebox as well.

Great pub if your young and abit mad. Good food. Inside and outside setting. Not a place for families, but good if your meeting friends and have few drinks.

One of the wonnderful things about Hitchin is that with all the pubs you cant help but find one pub that you like. The red hart has always been a bit if a bikers pub and has at one stage been the local for many a poeple who have spent a fair bit of time living in the town. This place could do so much better, but it's a tied house which is another story. I suggest you:

Don't come to this pub if:

1. You're older than 25 yrs old
2. Looking for a decent pint
3. You want a meal

This pub is for you if:

1. You're out to get blotto
2. You wanna game of pool
3. You're an alchol pops drinker
4. You're under 20 yrs of age
5. you're looking for your teenage daughter and son

A place with so much potential, and a obvious lack of enthusiam for running the place. A watering hole at best. Just make sure you stick to bottles and sprits. Shame.

Full of Russell Brand and Jonny Borrel wannabes - Who has the biggest back combed hair? ( And thats just the lads ) Loads of under aged girls can be found here. The fake I.D must be working.
Apart from that not a bad place, cool music and lively atmousphere. No poncey rude boys.

I'm not a fan usually a flat pint, over rammed and difficult to get served kings arms 20 seconds a way much better option.

Is good in summer though outside

it's A L R I G H T, nothing special at all. way too packed on weekends and filled with people who glare at you if you're not recognised/dressed the same as them. and whose stupid idea was it put a pool table by the bar! 4/10

Ahhh the Red Hart, what a pub. Been going here for about 10 years, friendly staff and a great pub for summer evenings sitting on the benches outside with a pint of Snakebite and Black! Prefer it on a Saturday as the crowd seems to be slightly older than Friday nights, also preferred the old layout with the pool tables up the top.Still one of the best pubs in Hitchin though. See you there!

used to drink in here all the time - in fact all day sunday sessions were held for many years, so feel i know it pretty well. BUT - me and 10 or so mates have all stopped visiting as its just dirty, filthy rotting place now - it just never gets cleaned. The beers fine, the rock music is good and the food aint that bad - just CLEAN IT! - last visit there were kebab wrappers floating around inside the bar!

Don't like the layout from the refit in 2004. They've moved the pool tables down to the bottom bar and have effectively turned it into a youth club. They've lost a lot of seating space doing this. Takes ages to get served even when it's quiet. Still, it's good in the summer with the outdoor seating and the food is fantastic (home cooked) even if we did have to wait for just over an hour for Sunday lunch when it wasn't particularly busy!

Everything everyone else has said is true - it is a great place and always has been. Bit too many teenagers on a Friday but maybe that's just me getting older?!

BEST PUB IN HITCHIN WITHOUT A DOUBT,MOST OTHER PUBS IN HITCHIN NOW TAKE THE APPEARENCE OF A GAY LADYBOYS PUB.ITS GREAT TO HAVE SOMEWHERE STILL TRADITIONAL AND LISTEN TO ROCK MUSIC INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO SOME POP SONG,SUNG BY SOMEONE WHOSE BALLS HAVENT DROPPED YET.I LOVE IT AND SO DOES 99% OF PEOPLE IN THE LOCAL AREA.

Given a recent facelift - pool tables moved downstairs and the bar extended at the top (too long imo, not enough bar staff to cover it and it takes ages to get served (45 minutes on Friday)).

Queen Elizabeth I stayed there back in the 16th century.

It is now a pub ideal for bikers and rockers.
