Tried here after a rebound from the nearby Sun.
Good 'pubby' feel and welcoming inside.
Four of us all had steaks (under £9 each) with all the trimmings and very nice they were too.
Beer was okay but being a McMullen pub only AK and Country available.

Cracking night on 13.6.14 - versatile "Russell Grant" guy doing the Karaoke. AK and Country in good condition too.

Visited with friend at end of Waltham Abbey crawl - arguably the liveliest atmosphere was found here. As it was Karaoke night there was no Heart FM as mentioned below! Mac's beers in reasonable form, and this was a good pub in which to finish before the walk back to Waltham Cross station.

Welcoming pub with a few tables outside and AK and Country Bitter from McMullens on handpump, quality fine.

Nice pub, beer good but could do with losing Heart FM.

We popped into the Welch Harp last Friday lunchtime and it was quite busy. Smell of fresh paint. I was told that there is a new landlord and things are improving. Then about twenty singers from a local choir came in and the place was buzzing. McMullen's is not my favourite beer but it was OK. The round of sandwiches was excellent. Lots of atmosphere but I could have done without the piped musak. The grave of King Harold II is only 20yds away.

This was aregular haunt for me and my mates when I lived in the area some years ago and ai'm soory to hear about the the lack of customers which I simply can't understand as it was a terriffic little place with bags of atmosphere and good beer.

Use it or lose it . . .

Was very popular when I lived locally (many years ago) but visited last month at lunchtime on a Friday and was the only customer! Sad for a pub with such character and excellent AK.

A dissappointment. Looked impressive, a true hisorical pub. But lacked a welcoming atmosphere inside and had run out of food.

I visited with a friend last night at the end of a "crawl" in Waltham Abbey. It was about 10.30 and my drinking companion and I were the only drinkers in the pub. Although the McMullens AK was on perfect form and the staff afforded us a warm welcome, the visit was tinged with a little sadness. This is an ancient, heritage pub, full of character and seriously under threat from under-use.

With this review comes a plea from the heart - Use this pub or lose a major part of the village's heritage. It would be very unfortunate for the town if the Welsh Harp were to close. The landlady last night told us that it is on a knife-edge.

Surely it can't survive on two people coming up from London once a year - Use the pub to keep it open!

Excellent.

I popped in during a visit to Waltham Abbey yesterday (05/09/07). Staff and locals (Michael, Lee and others) were very friendly and afforded me a welcome fit for a VIP. Since I last visited a year or two back, the pub remains unchanged, still keeping the Mac's ales in good condition. AK and Country were the better-tasting of these. Tasted "Cask" for the first time, rather like Greene King IPA in flavour and texture.

Kind of them to make the special effort to provide food at a time it was not normally available; thanks Michael for that.

I enjoyed the pub so much it is worth making a repeat journey to spend and evening there.

Ancient, probably medieval, pub with wonky beams, right next to Waltham Abbey and the towns main drag, Sun Street. A very characterfull place. The local morris dancers drink in here after their shows.

Eio's comments made me laugh. He went there in 1979 - probably a bit late to comment on the place 25 years later!

It could be great here, but is in fact average. Good building, bit it looks rather tatty inside. At 8pm Saturday night it was dead (3 old men). Perhaps it gets more busy at other times?

Sorry to hear of Eio's bad experiences here - ours were simply of a friendly country pub with crooked walls, keeping McMullen's Country Bitter in very good condition (My mate and I had two jugs of it each).

The landlord's friendly, and the pub was very relaxed at closing time because there's no trouble here (or at least it seemed like that). The fourth, and last pub on what had turned out to be an excellent crawl of Waltham Abbey Village, well worth the mile-or-so walk from Waltham Cross station.

I lived in Waltham Abbey for about six months in 1979. I found the locals to be ignorant unfriendly imitation Londoners who hated anyone from outside their miserable little village. The one exception was the landlord of this pub Mick Murphy. He was the only decent bloke i met there. The beer was a foul tasting local brew called McMullens. I soon returned to sunny south London and have never been back. I don't know if Mick is still there or even if he is still alive but he was the sort of bloke who would buy anyone a drink and there were plenty who took advantage. My advice to anyone who gets offered a council house in this horrible little place is don't take it. Life in a Deptford tower block is no fun but at least the people are genuine and you don't have to wait an hour for a bus.

A small, one-roomed pub around 6 or 700 years old. Can get too hot in the summer but worth a look as you can "taste" the history. Views of the Abbey to the side and Market Square from the front. Beers are very good but known locally as being expensive. Taxi office 50 yards away along with Chinese, Indian and English takeaways. The main tourist pub for visitors to Waltham Abbey.

tiny pub but loads of character, more than welcoming,in a great area

Something of a timewarp, this virtually unspoilt gem of a pub is worth a visit. McMullens AK and Country are in excellent condition. Very friendly staff and locals make this hostelry all the more inviting. Note the "collapsing" frontage through which you can walk onto the abbey grounds. Note the sign on the piano inviting competent players to have a go whilst others are advised to kindly refrain from doing so. A good pub. Recommended.
