user reviews of the Hearty Goodfellow, Southwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Hearty Goodfellow was my second pub in Southwell. It has one large room with a number of separate drinking areas. A male singer was performing. Some of the clientele looked as if they had had a few. Service was friendly and there is a good range of ales and ciders - Welbeck Abbey The Hearty Blonde, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Rudgate Viking Bitter, Everards Tiger, Dukeries Pale Ale, Westons Cider Twist Raspberry, Lilleys Mango Cider & Aspalls Waddlegoose Lane. Despite the good selection, I felt there was something missing here and it didn't quite have as good an atmosphere as the Old Coach House down the road. Still worthy of a solid 6/10 though.

The new landlords seem to have kept everything in order... Brilliant beer and food again in May 2013... Numerous real ales including Barnsley Bitter, Wentworth School of Hops, Blue Monkey BG sips and many more! Food was also excellent.

Sorry to hear Alison & Steve are leaving in the new year, pop into this pub eveytime i'm in the area best pub around for miles.
Hope the new landlord will keep Mallard on ?
Will look forward to see how it fairs.

What an excellant pub... This is Beer wonderland!

The actual pub is an Everards house, but also had multiple guests on tap, including 3 or 4 from the Mallard Brewery in Carlton, Notts. They also had a cider menu featuring around 10 ciders / perrys; Everytime I ordered one the landlady dissapeared out back (presumably to a cellar) and returned with the chosen drink.

The one i remeber was Black Rat; apparently produced traditionally in a family Somerset cider farmhouse using a blend of locally grown apples. I had the traditional scrumpy @ 6.0%.

To add to this, the food was excellant too. I had a ploughmans served on a slate which also came with bowl of homemade soup. There is also a large garden and undercover area outside.

Nothing to fault really...

I really like this pub. The food is superb. The beer top notch. The cleanliness of the cellar is second to none. This manifests itself in the great beer quality. I wish this was my local!!! It's also the Mallard Brewery Tap.

beer was good bit crowded at the bar but just did not quite have it for me bit stale and is it a pub or a food house, dont think you can do both in such a small area, will give it another when back out, but def preferred the coach house
rodneybl54 - 9 Dec 2010 17:00
A little too food orientated and although full had quite a reserved kind of crowd in (actually resembled a pensioner's luncheon club). The pint of Brimstone I had was very nice but didn't fancy hanging on and the missus wanted a proper seat as she doesn't like perching on a bar stool so we just had the one and left.

After being given a couple of tips and finding both pubs shut, it was 2 doors away from the Bramley Apple that we went to this pub. What a shame I was the driver.

Beer heaven. with 7 different handpumps and extensive Bottled Belgium beer selection to choose from.

A good pub taken over by Allison and Steve in January and what a good job they are doing. A very good choice of drinks and very good food. It is only early days but I am sure they will go from strength to strength. As far as I am concerned this pub must be tried at the earliest opportunity.

Another pub making the Top 40 where all the reviewers (except one) have only reviewed the one (or maybe 2) pubs. Suspicious

A warm welcome and a good choice of what can only be described as supebly kept ales await you at this small, but cosy pub. We ate from the chalkboards and were pleasantly surprised at the quality and quickness of food we were served. Local bands every fortnight were being advertised around the place and the landlord tells me we should get here early to get a seat. Hopefully we'll have the chance to enjoy a full evening here shortly. Thumbs up!!

It still comes over as a touch synthetic and dead inside - clientele tend to star at you. (To be fair, the owners are very friendly.)

The Coach has always come across as a much nicer place to me - lovely atmosphere and great ales
Rudyard - 1 Oct 2004 13:00

I remember this place as being good for Everards beers but a bit naff compared to the nearby Coach House and the Bramley Apple.

Will come in again soon having read the comments by the new owners.
Cobbo - 29 May 2004 10:21
Must come back and check it out. The Hearty had a, ermmmm, "fresh faced" crowd when I was a teenager and I haven't been in for some years.

Maybe see you in there some time next month. I will be visiting my parents in Southwell.
TheG - 17 Oct 2003 12:02
We have recently taken over this wonderful pub and are trying to build a strong trade after the pub was really run down by previous landlords. We now open lunchtimes & evenings serving quality, real home-made pub food, fine hand pulled cask ales, premium brand lagers, good wine and much much more! We'd love you to give us a try and tell us what you think. We hope you will be pleasantly surprised at what the 'new improved' Hearty Goodfellow can offer to everyone.
