Character aplenty in an historic building across the way from Rochdale's magnificent town hall, we arrived after 10pm on a Saturday night so what seemed to be a divorcees' extended night out was in full swing and wasn't for the feint hearted. The beer selection was good but an avoidable band were about to strike up.

Dire does not begin to describe this pub, a dark, gloomy excuse for a hostelry with no redeeming features.

Two ales were available from Timothy Taylor, i opted for the Cheddar Potter guest ale, drinkable and suitably priced. A bit of lighting and atmosphere would go a long way!

I came in here as it's in the great British beer guide! And boy did this pub not disappoint.

It was St Patricks day when I came in, 7 beers on draught and of the 3 I had the quality was excellent.

Rochdale is a funny little place but I quite like it and then there's the gothic looking town hall which is stunning and sits just opposite this lovely free house.

Being St Patricks day and Rochdale being at home to local rivals Oldham the pub was filling up nicely around 12 noon, the welcome was warm, the locals friendly and a roaring log fire was on.....what more could you want?

I'm sure this pub is on plenty of people's ale trail when in Rochdale but if Isn't then add it now.

A really cracking pub with a lovely atmosphere.

A welcoming pub with friendly punters and in very nice area of Rochdale town centre - sit outside on a sunny day, it's great. As for the beer, there were about 5 Ales on. We went for the local brew of Phoenix Arizona and the Phoenix Mild that was on offer. Nice bunch of Northampton football fans in there as well - a good, solid town centre pub offering quality ale. Good meeting point before heading off to the game via Baum...

Large stone pub overlooking the square and town hall, which is like a smaller version of Manchester's. . Lovely part of town and a good pub to complement it. It's opened out and large, with a big front room with the bar and a games room at the back with a pool table and sofas. Nice traditional lamps in the windows add to atmosphere as well as the wood panelling. Had a Blonde Witch from Moorhouses which was good, other beers were as listed by Rob, a very good selection. Food served it seems but not on a Saturday afternoon. Was busy with football fans and a good atmosphere prevailed. A cracker really, not to be missed if in town.

Another one of our regular haunts on the Rochdale real ale trail. Impressive stone built exterior directly facing the even more impressive gothic Town Hall. Inside is one large room divided into several areas by wooden partitioning and seating. Theres also a pool table in the area round the back of the bar. Has two large TV screens often showing sport of one kind or another. Has nine handpumps on the bar but usually only 6 of these are in action, the other 3 are used when they have a beer festival (usually twice per year). Serves Lees Bitter, Taylors Landlord and Best Bitter and 3 changing guests, one is always from Phoenix and the other two regularly feature local breweries such as Green Mill, Hornbeam and Moorhouses. It can get a bit raucous when the football is on, but its a decent pub.
