My first visit today. Despite living in the locality for 12 years, its well off my beaten track, so I specifically made the trek out of curiosity today. First things 1st - no real ale. A bad start. The pub itself was empty, all the 'action' is out back in the somewhat run-down shisha and outdoor seating area at the back that has two screens.

Promotional offers, music nights and membership discounting are geared entirely towards the local student population. Grilled meat dishes were being served and there's a tie-in with local kebab shops. Staff and many of the young crowd are Arabic speaking.

TBH, when I was at Uni drinking gallons of snakebite and black, I'd have absolutely loved this place. But as a grumpy middle-aged old scroat with a penchant for pwopa beer there's nothing for me here. Full marks for finding a niche to keep a backstreet pub open though as we've lost too many in recent years.

This was once a great pub, fantastic Turkish food, really nice outside area and great atmosphere.

What has happened is that the people who run it think you can keep a pub going without any attention at all. The outside area is now broken and run down, the furniture is shabby and dirty. The menu is reduced and the quality is slipping. It's not a bad pub as such, it's just very bad compared to the way it was.

No real ale and hardly anyone in this afternoon, despite having the football on TV.

Love this pub. It IS a hidden gem Strongers and I hope it stays that way - stuff 'Spoons (sorry, "Spouters" - like the change of name makes any difference), the Goose, the Anglers, Tollgate and the Nelson. I agree about the Scottish manager but I'm not sure he's there any more - haven't seen him on my recent visits. It seems to have 3 or 4 older Turkish men doling out the orders (Sopranos spring to mind ha) but the back garden area is the only place we go - great heating, covered areas, backgammon boards, hopefully more live music and fantastically fresh food that's really inexpensive and in large portions. I've said too much - I want it to stay a hidden gem.... I can't fault it though :-)

I had been here when it had newly opened. Very quiet and quite evidently still undiscovered.

I visited a few days ago again, and so much change has been made. Much busier than the last time I had gone. The back of the pub has been made brilliant use of with relaxing seating and a shisha area. Freindly staff too.

Although in a hidden location still definitely worth checking out. Im sure if more people start to hear about this place it has a brilliant future.

Visited on a Sunday for a quick pint a couple of months back. Very quiet, but comfortable enough. Pool table to amuse, too.

Back street pubs are having a hard time of it at the moment, so I wish them luck.

funny spot for a pub, nice inside, food decent, bit pricey for round here though

I agree with the previous posts that this is a nice out of the way pub where one can relax over a pint of standard draught or Staropramen. I thought that the Scottish guy behind the jump could brush up on his customer service skills as a hello and thank you goes a long way when a newcomer walks into a pub.

This is a good sized L- shaped pub that has been recently refurbished with a couple of plasma screens and a projector screen and Sky Sports along with a pool table. There is plenty of seating out the front in a decked area and there is also a beer garden out the back that I didnt get to see, but it looked nice enough in the photo advertisement at the front of the pub.

I dont think that this is a hidden backstreet gem, but I would make the three minute walk from the high street to drink here again.

Myself & partner has a very relaxing saturday evening at the Duke of Edinburgh sitting in the really excellent decked garden. We will definitely be going back. It was not busy so seems to be undiscovered by most of the locals. The most pleasant pub in the local area in my opinion.

Decent pub, good food (turkish), location is a bit out of the way
