user reviews of the Halfway Inn, Dunwear

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Judging by the reviews on here this was once a great busy food pub.
Why has nobody new come in and took the place over?
Seems like a real shame to me.

Closed and closed down, no used as the HQ of a driver training centre (hgv, cpc etc)

Yes this pub is temporarily closed. I understand the Landlord unexpectedly died and the building and land is up for sale. Was a great pub when open - all very sad

Apparently closed, as the car park is blocked -off and there is a sign to the effect that it is "private property keep out".

Nice pub, food was great. 2 real ales when I was there - Potholer and SummerSet - well kept. I'll go back when next in the area.

Very friendly pub with two real ales on and proper cider available too. Nice to find somewhere decent near 'Bilgewater' to drink in a relaxed atmosphere. Worth a visit.

I have visited this pub recently on several occasions. The landlord and landlady are very friendly and are very keen to support local breweries and local cider makers. There are usually two local real ales on, with plans to add more, and two local ciders. There is a comfortable, good-sized bar with real fire and daily papers (your dog is welcome too!), a dining area with bar, and a skittle alley. Although I haven't eaten there yet the menu looks tempting, and Ian and Fiona have plans to extend the vegetarian menu (something of a rarity in these parts!). After seven years of living in the barren wastes of Bridgwater, with its total lack of decent ale and worthwhile pubs, I am delighted to find somewhere to go for a nice pint and a conversation. If anyone from Somerset CAMRA reads this, perhaps you could visit and see for yourself? I know your support would be very welcome.

Thoroughly enjoyed my birthday sunday lunch at this welcoming pub, a really spot on carvery meal, best one I've had for a while and only priced at 6.50. Superb. The pub was packed and the landlady told me they normally do a minimum of 80 sunday lunches, so bookings are a must if you intend to visit. Was a real bonus to find they had lit the log fire as it was another wet and dull summers day! This is my second visit to this pub in one week - the first time I did not stop long as they were right in middle of changing brewery (updating pumps plus putting in new beers/real ales/local ciders etc.) On this visit we had a great time and having checked out their regular menu will definitely be back during the week.

Yoyo - please don't insinuate that because i only have one review that it is 'suspicious'. Everyone has to have a first review at some point and as it happens i don't visit an array of great pubs on a regular basis. Most are rather mediocre and not worth a mention - added to which i don't have the time or inclination to consider myself an expert on the local area as you clearly do.

I reviewed because i enjoyed myself and i will review again when i find another pub which i feel worth telling others about.

Please also note that I have not posted another rating with this comment as i didn't want to be accused of 'fixing' the score!

"yoyo, what a tosser - why not visit the pubs you comment on?"

I didn't comment on the pub, I commented on 3 suspicious reviews.

"Are you a bitter owner of one of the less friendly pubs in the area as you left a rating without even mentioning whether or not you had actually visited the
hostalery."

I have not rated this pub, nor am I a pub owner.

yoyo, what a tosser - why not visit the pubs you comment on?
For your info, I have 3 reviews at the moment with more to come as I travel round the southwest on business.
You really are a sad individual.

Yo Yo what are you trying to insinuate!!
I have no ties with this pub, in fact I live 80 miles away and if any pub would have given the same service I would have responded the same.

3 ratings and all of them 10's, at time of writing.
The first two reviewers never reviewed anything else on BITE, but both of them were inspired by this pub to register and then make one, and only one pub. review. All within one day of each other.

What a superb welcome from the hosts.
We arrived too late for food on Sunday night after paying 15 for taxi after reading the reveiws on this site.
Feeling sorry for us the landlord fired up the grill and made two fantastic, quality ribeye steaks. We stayed for hours and really enjoyed ourself.
Glad we found this pub and will deffo be back, hopefully in time for Sunday lunch

I happened across this pub last weekend - it's a treasure that ought not be a secret!! Fabulous carvery on the Sunday although as i didn't book i had to wait a while as it was so busy. The service was great, especially considering most of the staff were new apparently. The meal, pudding and coffee were all incredibly fresh and i have no complaint except that myself and my husband could barely fit back into the car afterwards! 10/10!!

Super pub, good food, friendly welcome. Worth a visit. The Sunday carvery is exceptional, but booking is a must.
