Still a decent cosy pub, seating/tables out front for smokers, helpful efficient barmaid. I indulged in Blue Monkey 'BG Sips', a tasty pint

The Market Pub was one of the busier pubs I found in what was a deserted Chesterfield town centre on Bank Holiday Monday evening. There is an L-shaped bar and the interior has a little character. Plenty of people were eating. The burgers looked tempting. A few drinkers were sat outside on the edge of the Market Square. Ales were Greene King Abbot, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Kelham Island Easy Rider, Oakham Citra & Welbeck Abbey Portland Black, Cavendish & Henrietta. Locals seem to enjoy fruit ciders in this town. The selection reflected this - Lilley's Apple & Blackberry Cider & Mango Cider. Probably the best pub right in the town centre.

Popular pub, but a bit pricey; on our visits I had Abbeydale 'Absolution', which was very nice, & Kelham Island 'Easy Rider' which was crisp/sharp and tasty. Bar staff were efficient.

Very busy pub, showing that if you get things right, punters will come.

Great pub food - ordered off a worryingly large menu. Great quality and all fresh.

Decent selection of real ales - tried a very good Landlord and Copper Dragon.

Good balance between diners and drinkers.

Recommended.

Very busy town centre pub. A lot of people eating what looked like substantial portions. Not all of the 8 real ales were on due to the numbers of customers. Having said that we had take our first choice back as it was just on the turn i.e. approaching the end of the cask. Without question it was changed for our second choice but the beer was continued to be served to other customers gradually getting more and more opaque until it was finally sludge and only then was the pumpclip turned round. This is an extremely bad practice, whether it be a one-off or in general as it could put a new customer to real ale off for life. The beer was one we normally like a lot, Leeds Pale and the replacement of Titanic Plum Porter was fine.

Nice enough town centre pub, somewhat food-oriented but with a good selection of ales to choose from. My pint of 4% ABV blonde beer was pleasant enough if unremarkable: at £3.60 a pint it seemed pricey by Chesterfield standards but the place was buzzing and clearly popular. Pleasant enough, but I would not rush back, there are other pubs in the town which I prefer.

My 4th pub of the afternoon and it’s the popular Market Tavern in as you guess the market area of the town!

There are 9 hand pumps which have 8 ales and 1 real cider on. I go for a pint of Welbeck Abbey’s Henrietta @ 3.6%, it’s a nice pint.

Several bar staff on and I receive a friendly welcome from all of them, always nice when you enter a pub and feel welcome.

There’s flagstone flooring throughout with a seating area for diners towards the rear of the pub. The food is extremely popular and there’s not a spare seat anywhere in this area. I take my pint and park myself opposite the bar and soak up the very friendly nature of this lovely looking pub.

The 4 pubs I have visited so far in Chesterfield have all been different but equally as good as each other and all with a good selection of well kept ales.

Wood bedecked and somewhat contrived town centre pub, but comfortable, with good staff and reasonable beer quality

Good feel to this place, good service and good beer. About half a dozen to choose from as I recall. Well worth a second visit.

Good town centre pub, with good staff and wide choice of ales. Mind you, for a Friday night, the ales were a bit strong. Not much available under 5%. Head is a bit fuzzy this morning.

Shame they didn't do food any later than 7:30, as the menu looked good.

Nice pub. Staff friendly and nice selection of real ales. Pop in if you're near the market and market hall.

Busy market place bar with 7 differing ales on, 3 mainstream. Tried the Spire's Cole Porter which was a fairly decent pint. Does food but is still more of a pub than an eatery. Nice place to escape the bustle of a busy market town. Staff were quite frindly too.

Good real ale pub. Had a day in Chesterfield and finished up here. The best of the bunch. 8 different real ales on and 1 scrumpy. Seemed a bit more real. Staff were friendly (invited us to a wine tasting!) and got chatting to some regulars who were very enthusiastic about the place. Will be back.

We liked this pub, was one of the few pubs in Chesterfield that was busy mid week & we could only put this down to the good quality home cooked food, Good choice of drinks, friendly staff, & locals.
If anything it was a little more pricey than other pubs but hey! its opposite a wetherspoons & still gets people in so im not the only one who thinks it was worth the 10p or so a pint extra for the atmospher.

For me, the Market is still the best pub in Chesterfield. They have good selection of well kept real ales with a changing selection of guests from both mainstream breweries and local micros. The Ashover Poets Tipple that I had yesterday was first class and the food, as always was superb including of course the yummy home made chips. If only all pubs were like this ...

Came highly recommended from someone I know in the area. Good helpful friendly staff and a nice selection of ales, though I must admit I've never seen anything dark in there. Food is top notch too, don't forget to try the homemade chips!

In spite of previous comments, I think that the Market is a pretty good pub. It is clean and comfortable, the staff and locals are friendly and as previously reported, there is a good selection of real ales available. I think that there were 6 on when we visited including a mild. I opted for the guest ale, which happens to be one of my favourites St Austell Tribute and I went back for more because it was in tip-top condition.

The food is tip-top too. No overpriced pretentious poncy continental crap just good honest British food, much of which is sourced locally, including from the market, which is just outside the front door. It is freshly cooked, nicely presented, very good value, and best of all, the home made chips are delicious.

We will definitely be eating and drinking here the next time that we are in Chesterfield.

called on a recent visit to chesterfield.
would agree with rpadam.
handful of real ales on offer.
the ones I tried were okay.
appears more of a qwoffing house rather than a comfy market town pub, which the flowery exterior implies.

The Tetley sign outside didn't seem to offer much hope, and I nearly walked past. However, it has been 'done up' in the coporate idea of an old-fashioned 'ale house' style (i.e. lots of wood) and offered a reasonable range of real ales. The Timothy Taylor Landlord was OK, but not top notch.
