user reviews of the King's Head, Huddersfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The King's Head is the better of the two pubs at the train station, in my opinion. A very basic interior. But, a great place for the real ale and cider drinker. Yesterday's selection was Bradfield Farmer's Blonde, Timothy Taylor Landlord & Golden Best, Magic Rock Ringmaster & Hat Trick, Vocation Pride & Joy, Moorhouse's Vanilla Stout. Ilkley Ruby Jane, Goose Eye Chinook & North Riding Mosaic Pale. The cider was Broadoak Draught and the perry was Abrahall's Cracklin' Rosie. Without a doubt one of Huddersfield's best pubs.

My how station pubs in the UK have improved to be outstanding. Decorated or non-decorated in shabby chic style, it's a bare but pleasingly large space with a great number of excellent local ales on tap. The town's own Magic Rock brewery was represented as was Ilkley. Busy in advance of a Roses football fixture between the Terriers and Preston North End.

The King's Head is at the other end of the station from the Head of Steam. The tiled interior of this place is much simpler than the Head Of Steam. But the ale and cider range is good. There are craft beers too. Drinkers spill out onto the large square in front of the station. The ale range on Saturday was Yorkshire Dales Fors Abbaye, Small World Thunderbridge Stout, Golcar Dark Mild, Abbeydale Red, Wit and Blue, JW Lees Kaleidoscope, Church End Goat's Milk, Timothy Taylor Landlord & Golden Best & Bradfield Farmer's Blonde. Ciders were Burnards Oakey Dokey & Pulp Damson Cider. Needless to say, it's handy when catching a train. Although you may just miss it!

Half way through a great, painfully slow, re-furb. So far so good.
Watch this space. Still great beer.

Like previous reviewers this was our last pub before the train home and I would agree that it is basically one huge square room with a small stage at the back but there is also a side room which although not as interesting may be a little more "cosy" ? Anyway, again like many pubs in town - a great selection of beer (we tried Bradfield Farmer's Blond which is a nice easy-drinking golden ale) Very busy at 7pm on a Saturday - probably a mix of people coming into town for the evening and those; like us, heading home. There is no doubt tat it has the feel of a large station waiting room and that,of course,is exactly what it was/now is but don't be put off - the beer is good and it is perfect for the train! ps I'm not sure if they already do this but beer take-outs would be handy for the journey home!

Situated on the Huddersfield train station, this serves a great selction of real ale at good prices. Whilst it is a little tatty around the edges, there is something appealing about the place which makes it better than the cleaner but more expensive Head of Steam nearby.
This is a large one room pub with a great deal of atmoshpere and that certain genuine feeling that some pubs try to copy and often fail. Give it a try.

Last Huddersfield pub we visited as we had a train to catch and a few minutes to spare. Good range of well-priced ales - some might say it is a bit open and waiting-room-like but we found it fine.
Stamfordian - 7 Apr 2013 23:17
Good selection of ales. Left feeling underwhelmed by the bar staff as I was left waiting while locals came to the bar and was acknowledged immediately while I was served as an after thought. Is a proper boozer and convenient for the train station.

Good choice of ale and good service. The wife insisted that we moved away from the seats by the gents door due to the unpleasant aroma. It amazed us how many people tried to use the door next to the stage to access the railway station. Perhaps a big notice on it might be a good idea.
GazzaTheBeerMan - 22 Oct 2012 12:27
The better of the two pubs at Huddersfield station, a large selection of ales and friendly staff. Pretty tatty inside but it's a pub so who really cares? Worth a visit.

Superb pub, but beware - as part of the Rail Ale Trail it can get stupendously busy on a Saturday lunchtime / afternoon, to the extent that people queue out of the door. A lot of these clientele are not bothered about the quality of the real ale, but simply want to get tanked up on lager before their next port of call in Dewsbury or Stalybridge. Midweek is best if you want to be able to hold a sensible conversation.

As for the beer, you can't fault it on quality and price.
arihall - 2 Jul 2012 18:18
A revisit last month as part of a CAMRA crawl. Excellent pub with sensibly priced, moreish real ale. Recommended.
founddrunkinyourgarden - 4 Apr 2012 14:00
Cracking pub serving well kept, well priced ale. A bit ramshackle maybe but who the hell cares. A better prospect beer & price-wise than the pub at the opposite end of the platform.
founddrunkinyourgarden - 16 Feb 2012 14:22
Not sure what this place is about, just seems to be a room with sticky beer splattered floors, second hand school furniture and full of bloody students. More akin to the student bar at a Uni. Rancid. And my pint was off too.
Hodge1 - 8 Nov 2011 15:03
Called-in while changing trains. Service is always friendly and efficient. Ales are kept in tip-top condition and good value - starting at 2.20 a pint. There is always at least one dark ale and one strong one. Big, good value sandwiches help soak-up the ale.

The furnishings? I'd go to Habitat or Ikea - not a pub - if interior design was my primary concern.

Splendid pub - always worth a visit.
wobblybob - 19 Aug 2011 13:33
Can't really say much more than what as been written. This pub is OK but with a little imagination, effort and probably not too much capital investment it could be a gem. Would visit again but prefer the Head of Steam at t'other end of platform.
dhekelia - 19 Apr 2011 19:18
As a previous poster states, a tiled floor does exist. The only highlight i'm afraid, this is a cheerless dump with a mediocre selection of beers and not particularly cheap either.

NO!!
nokegthanks - 13 Apr 2011 21:41
Huge indoor space that was quite sparse and rather empty. Minimal furnishings do not detract from the cheap prices for an excellent selection of real ales that were well kept. This place was not as nice inside as the other at the end of the platform, but I preferred it for the beer.
FlimFlamMachine - 7 Feb 2011 14:06
Far more of a pub than it's twin at the other end of the station. Largish room with tiled floor - there is a smaller room at the 'Leeds ' end which seemed like a laundry room (possibly to do with it smelling dam;p and having a washing machine in it).Tried the Church End Goats Milk and Hophead Bitter - both excellent and both cheap.

Enjoyed this place in several ways. OK so its scruffy but so what-excellent range of beers with Taylors Golden Best at a wallet pleasing 2.10/pint! Would imagine it would be really good when the live music is on. Reminded me of the pubs in the early 1980s.
However sad to see at 5pm midweek hardly anyone in, in contrast to the Head of Steam up the other end of the platform which was almost full. I'm afraid the aspirational customers of the Head of Steam may well end up having to drink in the Kings Head once dumb Dave and traitor features Clegg have finished with them.
Corkypunt - 15 Sep 2010 18:47
Having visited Stalybridges station buffet and Dewsbury's "West Riding", the interior of this pub was a bit of a disappointment. It has a tiled floor which betrays what was maybe a former Victorian opulence. Apart from that it has a vast interior with a mish mash of furniture that feels empty and lacking in character. A stage and the Jimy Hendrix sign outside suggests it is probably a good live ban venue and I am guessing that band nights would be the best time to visit.
Apart from that, a vast range of real ales at relatively give away prices. As commented elsewhere this place is really about the beer. Definitely worth a visit for that reason alone.
tarkatherotter - 13 Aug 2010 19:55
Great real ale pub just off the platform at the Leeds end of Huddersfield station. There were ten ales available on my visit. The pub has one entrance from the platform and one from St George's Square.
Rod_Hariga - 5 May 2010 20:51
Another great pub in Huddersfield - this place is about quality real ale.
kernott1 - 2 May 2010 06:45
Please don't mess about with your lovely pub. The beer is great, the company is grand and the bands are awsome. If folk want shiny new tell em to go to any of the wino bars in town! We love KH as it is thank you.
Barmie - 21 Mar 2010 10:52
The King's Head is one of the best ale houses in the area - not just Huddersfield, but West Yorkshire. If you're paying a flying visit to Huddersfield make sure you go to this pub rather than the Head of Steam at the other end of the platform.
Beers tend towards the pale and hoppy/citrussy type and prices currently are around the 2,20/30 a pint mark. Sometimes our pub crawls of the area never get further than the Kings Head!
arihall - 23 Feb 2010 18:00
The King's Head is a dump, dump, dump.
The beer is about the best in Huddersfield and that's saying something.
the only saving grace is the lovely floor. Planning permission was granted for big alterations (restaurant, mezannine) which would be great, but that was years ago. Come on Richard, get cracking with it!
Richardhuddleston - 23 Feb 2010 13:45
10 ales on make it a visit, a bit more working class than the classier Head of Steam but so what - the beer was good and there's lots of it. Do both pubs and enjoy life.
Booze_Allen - 30 Jan 2010 21:02
Can't add anything much to oldboots' review, he's got it spot on. You really can't do Head of Steam without visiting this one!
Abteilung - 29 Jan 2010 21:06
On Platform 1 like the Head of Steam, plenty of good real ales. Bit School Hall like but worth a visit.
ppw - 2 Jan 2010 22:50
Not much to add to the thorough reviews below. Came in on a trip to the ground with London Saints. Lots of excellent real ale and a must visit if you are training it.
GuideDogSaint - 26 Aug 2009 20:08
Called in this pub in March while in Huddersfield for the Star beer festival. Massive room with a few tables and a smaller room that was pretty full. Looked cold as the floor was tiles and with the large room having so few furnishings in it. It is certainly a place for beer lovers to go to though. We enjoyed a Durham and Howard Town beer before continuing round the Good Beer Guide pubs.
gillhalfpint - 10 Jul 2009 11:32
Found the atmosphere a bit stunted in here after being in the Head of Steam on the other side of the station. Scuffier pub too. Beer choice was good though and i would go back just for that. No decent cider or perry.
ZapuTheSnake - 15 Jun 2009 07:55
Housed in part of Huddersfield's impressive station building at the east end of platform 1, although access appears to be only possible from the street side. It is basically a large plain room about 35 foot square, with a smaller room beyond and a smallish alcovelike space next to part of the bar counter. There is some bench seating and tables round the edge with a few Britannia tables with stools in the middle. There is a stage at one end of the room under a window that allows you to watch the trains going by or if you're going towards Manchester see when the next train is due, a very useful if unintended feature. The walls and ceiling are plain painted anaglypta but enlivened with some framed Rizla adverts and a large mirror over one of the fireplaces, as it says below there is a nice victorian tiled floor. It may once have been a more impressive victorian buffet but dcor is not the point of the Kings Head, in the words of Fyfe Robertson in a long forgotten TV advert; No! It's BEER!. The impressive collection of 10 hand pumps, three serving real cider, have a changing selection of wonderfully well kept ales from mainly small breweries, there are a few kegs also available. A large blackboard over the fireplace shows the usual strength and price information although I wasn't the only customer who totally missed it on entering even though it's right opposite the door! Friendly staff and as you might guess the customers are largely but not exclusively, real ale devotees. By the way, the King in the pub's name is Jimi Hendrix, according to the sign outside.

Not only does this pub have some of the best kept and served ales in town, but it also has some of the best live bands on every sunday from 4pm till 6pm. Totally immersive heaven
ferritmaster - 21 Apr 2009 16:13
Very different from the Head of Steam at the other end of the grand station building, this is a fairly basic pub with an emphasis on just one thing - beer. The main room is a large space, looking rather 'unfilled' by the plain wooden furniture, but this allows you to see the interesting tile-work and other original features. The side room on your right as you enter feels less like a cavern and I guess this tends to fill up first. Great range of real ales on handpump, including an excellent Roosters Amarillo (chosen mostly because its distinctive pump clip, I have to admit).
rpadam - 28 Feb 2009 12:07
My first stop for each town game and its a joy to arrive.. plenty of choice in the ale stakes which change on regular basis which varies each visit so you dont get stuck down with the same drink week in, week out ...

As far as I know the building is listed so it cant be altered too much and in that it keeps a lot of traditional features (i.e the tiled floor) which is great..

You cannot go wrong with a visit here .. 10/10
aleterrier - 21 Feb 2009 06:15
Located at the very end of platform 1 or accessed from St Georges Square, the Kings Head (renamed from the Station Tavern in 2008) is easily missed. That makes it all the more surprising that its usually so busy. The building itself comprises of a large room with two smaller rooms coming off. Its a bit rough & ready, in terms of decor & facilities, but the saving grace is the beer. Always a decent selection of handpulled beers, at competitive prices, and always on good form.
viewfromthebar - 13 Feb 2009 13:17
Good range of real ales - well kept. However, not the most aesthetically pleasing location within which to while away an hour. Unless you like Victorian mosaic flooring anyway...
aquadave - 28 Jan 2009 23:12
Great choice of ales, friendly service and brilliant sandwiches. Well worth missing a train for!
wobblybob - 12 Apr 2008 22:30
Pub has reverted to its former name, "The Kings Head". Fantastic pub, had at least 10 rotating guests on when I visited yesterday, and the beer was in excellent condition.
Sharp - 28 Dec 2007 16:07
Visited here whilst on a football trip yesterday. A rather functional, ex-station waiting room, there really is an excellent selection of beers here. However, the rather characterless and barn-like quaility of the decor rather detracts from the experience of going there. Would go there for the beer, certainly not the atmosphere.
