user reviews of the George, Charmouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pub is pleasant inside and also has a large garden out the back with a few goats and other animals.

Range of ales ok if not a little common.

My only complaint is that the pub felt like a hectic Wetherspoons with kids buggy''s you name it!

However this was my fault for visiting on an August Saturday on a nice day!

6/10 Would be better at a quieter time.

I had a pint of something from the St Austell Brewery, it was far too cold! Definitely geared towards families, which is no bad thing but the food was uninspiring and we decided to head elsewhere. Shame, I think the pub could do so much better.

A pleasing interior and garden which both felt welcome after a trek in blazing heat from Chideock via Seatown and the lofty Golden Cap – the woman behind the bar was unhesitating when we asked if our water bottles could be filled – indeed offering gin as an option. Family oriented and a veritable adventure playground of activities bears that out. The main road location makes it hard to imagine Charmouth as Jane Austen’s favourite resort.

Nothing changed, greedy landlord, hope he goes bust.

could have so much potential this pub a shame the landlord is only concerned about making money and not the quality of what hes producing, food below average and over priced for alcohol given its supposed to be a free house...... local should be supporting the palmers pub up the road.

Visited Charmouth again. No improvement in the George and new landord/lady (AGAIN) in the Oak. Can't see either of these pubs lasting much longer.

On a recent visit staying a few nights cant say I was terribly impressed by the welcome we recieved had to work our way to the bar passed some miserable locals. When we did get our drinks at an extortunate price could at least have got them in a clean glass! Went to Royal Oak following night.

Real ale much too cold. I had to ask for the glass to be warmed before drawing the pint. The Tribute had a chill haze which magically vanished when the glass was warmed.
I ordered a sirloin steak with chips, peas and garnish. The meal itself was ok but served on a cold plate. The pepper sauce was also placed in a cold small jug so this too was almost cold before it reached my table.

The landlord and his partner were also cold. I get the impression that they are a 'We know you have some money in your pocket and we want it. We don't care if you come back, just give us the money and go!' My next visit to Charmouth will be the Royal Oak and definitely not The George.

The wife and I visited the George two evenings in a row for a meal this weekend, as camping just round the corner. Potentially put off by the two most recent comments on here, we walked up to the Royal Oak, only to be told they'd run out of food at 8pm on a Saturday. Came back to the George and were very pleasantly surprised. Otter was just up my street, but I could see why it's distinctive flavour might put a few off. They also had Tribute available. The steak and kidney pie was a huge portion and (whether homemade or not) was very tasty and piping hot. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, including the blonde ones. We recommended the place to two families pitched next to us and they joined us the following night. I had bangers and mash in a giant yorkshire, and the wife had a very nice fish pie. There was a great atmosphere and I would certainly go back. Maybe it does need a bit of a refurb, but I wouldn't want it turned into every other gastro-pub. It serves its purpose very well.

An average pub just off the sea front, nothing particularly good on the beer front,a couple of so so Otter beers, a really good garden( if you are aged four),inside a pool table and a typical early seventies time warp decor, mahogany bench table loads of red everywhere, a fruit machine placed strategically so that it blocks just about anyone who moves towards the garden or toilets, this could be a good pub but just about everything would need changing, different beers, a resiting of new decent furniture and staff that show a welcome and a steam clean.

Visited here with my fiance. Nice looking pub, unfortanatly I think you need to have a reshuffle of staff...

Upon visiting the George at Charmouth I had a nice drink with my partner, and thought we will come here again, good service I thought by the women with the brown hair. EHHHH wrong answer. We arrived the next day or so onwards and went to order. We were told we could only pay by cash...which is unusual but fine ok. Found ourselves a table (which hadn't been cleaned or plates collected so I thought Id be helpful and take them to the bar) ehhh wrong thing to do...wasnt even thanked...so waited at the bar anyway to be served and said Hi to one of the blond waitresses expecting to be served.Nope....she just looked at me blankly and walked on by. They then asked the locals in the bar if anyone was being served, didnt even look in my general direction so thought ok great, got mine and kates drinks and then went into the restrurant which was sweltering. Everyone looked generally annoyed and also the food looked disgusting AND Microwaved rubbish. So after my macdonalds type introduction to the George inn at Charmouth we went onto the Pizza place down the road and this was much more accomodating and the food there is lovely. Im afraid this place is hit or miss, in our case miss. I think the two blonde girls there need to be sacked as they are stuck up their own bum.etc etc..and the people with the brian hair are nice, keep them on. Also do home made dishes and you'll be fine.

Regards,

MJ

visited this pub every year for 6 years now and only seen improvements. A great Family Pub but also has something for everyone. Food always hot and well presented, meats from local butcher im told and are obvious good quality dont know why a previous person said not as i have had many steaks and they melt in your mouth !! All the staff are warm and welcoming and often chat with visitors even on the busiest of days. Beer kept very well . I wish we had a pub as good as this one near our home, although the wife may disagree !! Long may the landlord/landlady remain !!

Visited last week on a very cold day.
Lovely log fire helped to unfreeze us!
Nice welcome and good value food.
The Otter was O.K. as well.
Will visit again when we are back in Dorset

Visited last week and was pleased to see it was a Freehouse so was very disappointed to find that this freehouse only had ONE hand pump on !!
Was offered John Smith smooth though...............YUK.
Had a bite to eat, lovely Steak and Kidney pie but only average chips and the only 'decent' beer, Otter, was okay but served far too cold.
Not really impressed.

Had a meal here with my wife and we were greeted by a very unhappy barmaid who had lost the art of being polite, Sirloin steak @ 13.95 ordered medium rare was nothing more than a slab of microwaved frozen meat from one of the cheaper outlets that looked like it had been washed up on the beach, very disappointing as we were expecting a nice meal at that price, we would definitely not go back there.

Popped in here last week with the family, no complaints, well kept Otter Bitter and Otter Amber, very busy with holidaymakers, our food came quickly and was perfectly acceptable. Big garden out the back full of stuff for kids to do, yes this pub will never be on the CAMRA list of favourites but so what?! Very pretty frontage covered in hanging baskets. And yes, rather odd they do not accept cards at all, luckily I had enough cash on me.....
Hodge1 - 17 Aug 2010 17:12
Be warned! This pub only accepts cash! This is 2010? No credit or debit cards are accepted. Looks like a nice place, shame we couldn't eat there. Dissapointed......

This is the seasiders pub , prams, babies crying and hectic, a garden full of kiddies entertainments like swings , table football etc. If you are a member of the grumpy party the Royal Oak further up the hill would be a better choice but this caters for a lot of families who are hot and bothered with kids who are sunburnt and hungry.
slerpy - 16 Jun 2009 16:59
99.9% of the food is from packets at restaurant prices, if you can stick that and the reception from the regulars then good luck.

good ale, choice of cider poor for west country pub, food quality (dingtechnology) and poor value for money, landlord booring, landlady never seen, (praise the lord).

It is a pub located in a world Heritage site for fossils. It is a very freindly pub with a mixture of locals and holiday people. They allow Adults with well behaved children. They have a play area and an adult only area. They allow dogs in large beer garden and in parts of pub. A great all rounder and owned not managed
