Sad news regarding the Whip. Landlord Nick is retiring and the pub is under new tenancy as of Wednesday 7 December 2016. I have been a customer there on an occasional basis for years and have always enjoyed the experience hugely. I wish Nick the very best for his retirement and hope he had many years of peace and quiet before him. Thanks, Nick, for all the beer and food! Lunch there today was a sad event.

A great, unpretentious pub at a high point in the Chilterns. Six interesting real ales on tap met our gaze on entry including brews from Maldon and Saffron Walden outfits, the food was home made, of the pub grub variety and carried off well and the service friendly. The beer garden proved to be a perfect place for the two house Jack Russells to gambol.

The Whip Inn was the best of 6 pubs I visited in the Chilterns today. It has a good range of ales and 4 ciders from Lilleys too. There are 2 main rooms - a bar area and a larger seating area at the rear that was being used by diners. The young bar staff were quite entertaining. Although the 'f' word was perhaps being used a bit too liberally by one. Ales were Malt Prestwood's Best, Stancill Barnsley Bitter, Slightly Foxed Brewing Company Slightly Foxed, Nottingham Rock Mild, Rebellion IPA & Burton Bridge Stairway To Heaven. Ciders were Cheeky Pig, Pear & Raspberry, Bittersweet & Gladiator. Chalkboards show the beers and ciders and I liked the idea of having the ales on display in third pint glasses high on the wall next to each ale on the blackboard. I've never seen it done this way before. I wasn't expecting to find a pub this good today. I'll probably make the effort to get back here one day.

finally got to the whip inn this weekedn and i am amazed. it is a fantatic pub.

its perched up in the chilterns with great veiws, and on a quiet road.

the building is nice and traditional and the inside is nice and cosy and traditional as well.

the landlord and bar staff were absolute gentleman, the pub dogs were lovely and the locals very welcoming.

the beer is excpetional. 6 beers on the taps (at least 4 were local) and the next 6 were chalked up on the board ready to be put on the pumps.

didnt eat but food prices were reasonalble.

a spectacular pub.

This place is one in the eye for all those who believe that pubs need to move with the times in order to be a success. No frills, just great beer and food in an unpretentious, old-school boozer.

On the way out we couldn't help but notice a beautifully kept vintage Mercedes Roadster which had just pulled up. It was only after we'd chatted to the owner for a few minutes that I realised he was Jay Kay. So there you go - Q.E.D.

The current rating of 8.7 pretty much says it all. Taken dispassionately a medium size pub, half bar half restaurant but it is the bar part where it all happens - don't ask me to recite what beers were on as I certainly couldn't remember them all, but every single one was in excellent condition. To add to this, the service was friendly and the place certainly has atmosphere. I have eaten here and the food was fine, but that was some years ago.
To sum it up, a brilliant pub in an otherwise ordinary building. A visit here should be included in the itinerary of anyone who has a yen to run a pub and many already doing so should take time out to pay it a visit.

Decided to visit some pubs on the 300 bus route unfortunatly we didnt get to far as The Whip was the first port of call and we never got any further.
What a great little pub 6 ales mainly from micro breweries all in great condition. It was surprisingly busy midweek but you can see why.
Whist we were there a chap came through with boxes of fish which the landlord told has had just come of the boats in Devon and delivered direct. So as it was 6.30ish we stayed for cod & chips it was the best ive had in years.
Brilliant beer great food open all day more pubs like this please.

In the living hell that is Buckinghamshire, this is an oasis of happiness.

Paradise for the real ale drinker. Even better my visit coincided with their beer festival; huge tent in the garden and a jazz band! Fantastic. Good honest pub grub served by cheerful young ladies. Sadly I was on cola. I will return for a few beers. Probably on that infamous bus that stops right outside.

What a brilliant pub, 6 really good real ales, good sensibly priced food and a very pleasant and efficient bar maid, ticks all my boxes.

5 ales on as usual - I tried 3 of 'em including the Vale Ninkasi seasonal and I couldn't fault them. Get a torch when flagging down the bus driver at night (directly opposite pub) otherwise they'll either ignore you or run you over! What a great pub.

I was most privileged to be taken to this pub by locals, Ian and Marie. He had mentioned this place and I'm so glad I took him up on his invitation.

It was pretty miserable outside but the bar is warm and welcoming. The beers were high quality and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. In fact in the three hours we were there, we saw 2 pumps change to new beers.

The three of us all had different meals and all were first class.

So nice to spend time somewhere in such pleasant company without loud noises or chavs spoiling the scene.

I will be back!

Went on a sunny summer weekend. I started by ordering the Beef and Ale Pie. This was an inspired choice, as it was the only item on the menu that had run out. I had a "Whip Burger" instead. This was a large, tasty burger in a fresh bap, wih fat free crisp brown chips and a salad. Excellent! The Rebellion Beer was top notch as well. Nice garden for sitting out in summer.

Went again on Monday to see how it had fared since my review last year. Still fantastic - beer in tiptop condition, food adequate, and whilst a different Barmaid this time, still a warm smile. They must hand-pick these girls, as you never see any chavvy types here - HURRAH!!

Will be back later in the year, keep up the excellent work!

Can't believe this is within 35 minutes of home and yet have never ventured here before. Arrived at about 3.30pm on a gloriously hot and sunny afternoon, very few people in at that point, but a welcoming barman and six very well-kept ales to choose from. Sat out in the garden taking in the windmill and the circling kites and watched the clouds float by - absolute bliss. They had a food stall set up at the front door selling local cheeses, chutnies etc and a real coal barbecue on the go as well.
Well worth becoming a regular stop-off, highly recommended.

great pub situated on the edge of the Chilterns escarpment, lots of Red Kites to be seen flying around and that is a fantastic sight on it's own! The Whip inn is an amazing pub serving 5 ales on hand pull serving Bridge Farm Cider from Somerset, the Landlord goes down and picks it up himself! the ales were all in top condition and i had a Sandwich for lunch, it was delicious, 6 rounds of farm house ham and English Mustard on delicious brown bread! a real treat to find this pub and it is obviously well known as it was packed! well worth the trek to find it.

However the Landlord has got rid of Sky TV due to the Business costs, fair one! something like 1500 per month!

try this pub it is well worth it!

Great pub, good selection of real ale, seperate dining room with good food, and the beer prices were very reasonable.
Randyray - 14 May 2009 14:47
Fantastic pub for real ale. 5 handpumps with beers rotating through them at a rapid rate -- 700+ in 2008.

Very friendly staff and nice barmaids (as mentioned below).

Publican actually takes care to cook his own food, which is very reasonably priced.

On the 300 bus route between Aylesbury and High Wycombe to boot.

I visited this Pub this afternoon, and can honestly say I was not disappointed. A friendly smile greeted me as soon as I arrived by the rather gorgeous girl behind the Bar, and to cool me down I had a Pint of Golden Archer's, followed swiftly by Oxford Gold....both in excellent condition.

The Cheese and Onion Baguette mopped up some of the Ale, and owing to the fact that I had the Chariot outside, I had to call it a day.

I thoroughly intend to visit in October for the Beerfest, and for those who have no idea what a typical English Pub should be like.....get and visit this one!! Probably the wisest decision you'll make all year!!
bitterboy1970 - 21 Aug 2008 18:33
Second last two comments - 5 real ales including one from the Breconshire brewery and Sharps on this visit. Food is good - decent main courses for 6-10. The 300 bus service from Aylesbury to Wycombe goes past (& stops)here. Beer festivals are held in a large marquee in the garden - the jazz band always makes a bit of a racket though.
Booze_Allen - 20 Jul 2008 22:51
Pretty much agree with the last reviewer. Range of beer is far out and to be honest, I'd never heard of any of the 4 ales on when I visited. Made for an interesting evening though - especially as the wife was driving! Food was good but as the bar can get boisterous, not the kind of place for the food snob who aims to eat in cathedral-like quiet.

I cant believe I am the first to mention this pub.
If you like real ale and good then this is the pub for you, there are 5 hand pumps for guest ales and the selection is always changing, over 400 different ales served at the bar last year. The ales are always in top condition as the Landlord Nick is a dedicated follower in the art of keeping cask conditioned ale.
The pub also holds 2 real ale festivals a year one in May and one in October where you have the choice of over 20 ales.
The restaurant is spacious and the bar cosy there is always good conversation between the punters. Rugby is popular here as Wasps play a few miles away so you can catch any games on sky, footy is also shown.
A great selection of pub grub and it does get busy at lunchtimes and weekends.
The beer garden is great in the summer, its right next to the windmill at Lacey Green and has a good view of the countryside.
Lots of good walks nearby too, dogs welcome.
