user reviews of the Jolly Gardeners, Old Windsor

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I really wanted to try this pub out, it is in the GBG and has good reviews, so I made a special trip one lunchtime recently, only to find it locked at 1pm. The landlady came out to tell me that they dont open until 2pm in winter, which I find quiote amazing. Why 2? surely open 12-2 and catch the lunch time trade, but to open at 2 is bizarre.

Having been told about the previous posters comments, and having been a regular of this pub for the last 13 years, I felt I had to jump to the defence. The Jollies has never pretended to be anything other than a community based (dog friendly) local, as noted by other posters. This, they manage to achieve very well and have been appearing in CAMRAs Good Beer Guide for several years. As for the landlady not getting on with the customers, well, thats just rubbish take it from a regular.
I can only suggest the previous poster sticks to some of the more youthful plastic pubs in Windsor, where they will find other like- minded people supping fizzy alco-pops pretending to be 18.
With their attitude to age, It can only be hoped they never grow old, or at least, if they do, they grow nicer with it. They are certainly not the type of people I wish to rub shoulders with.

The pub looks nice -on the outside- but walk inside and you're going to have a bad time. i visited two days ago on passing and it took ages for me to be served and it wasn't even that busy. I saw by observing that most of the customers didn't get on to well with what i thought to be the land lady, she was very rude and shouldn't be working behind a bar at that age, really what they need is a younger server who is going to be more friendly and able, the bar staff at the moment are all....well...old. they allow their dog to roam free around the pub, which is un-hygienic and off putting to customers. most of the customers seemed to be in their own little world and took hardly any notice of me and my husband. i can see business is not going to well and hasn't been for a while and i can see why. They need to stop being so stuck up and employ some more friendly and attractive staff members and change some aspects of the pub to pull the punters in. i was really unhappy with my visit and shall not being recommending or going there again unless i hear it has changed dramatically.

Visited Friday night, busy pub popular with local residents. Good atmosphere, sociable clientele and prompt service. Bombardier was in top condition, although at London prices. Dog friendly. Will visit again.

Just spotted the last comment about only two real ales . We at CAMRA would prefer that there be only two very well kept and popular ales on offer, rather than pubs trying to serve a larger range and just not achieving the throughput. This results in the barrels being on sale for more than the ideal 3/5 days, and the beer being sold when it has already started to deteriorate with the 'souring' process already under way.
I think the Jolly Gardeners has got the balance spot on, as I have been back quite often since my last visit and the beer has always been absolutely spot on. Sadly this cannot be said for most establishments who would rather put short term profits over longer term quality.

We visited here last Tuesday evening and it was fairly busy with a good mix of people. There were only 2 real ales on offer - Courage Best and Wells Bombardier. It's the only pub in Old Windsor I have ever visited. So I can't compare it with others. But overall I found it disappointing.

When I last visited this pub about 4 years ago, it was a grubby, dingy little back street boozer infested by rowdy, heavy drinkers who seemed to be content drinking the not particularly nice beer that was on offer.
I was astonished to see that it was now in the latest Good Beer Guide, so with reservations I decided to give it another go- my goodness, what a change! It has been completely turned round - now a pleasant, friendly and airy atmosphere. Beer on absolute top form, too.
Sadly, pressure of work and travel means I am not able to get back to Old Windsor as often as I would like, but when I can I will be returning.

Not a huge selection of pubs in Old Windsor, but this one is the best by far. I dont know what time the poster who said no people and no music went in there... maybe when they were closed? This is a well run and exceptionally friendly pub. Food is superb, and if you'll excuse the pun, cheap as chips!

Great beer, excellent and good value food: a welcoming family-run pub of the best tradition.

Last proper pub in the area that hasn't been turned into a faceless chain restaurant or microwave cafeteria! Tasty freshly cooked food and superb real ales. Best pint of Bombardier I've had in ages.
Shame about small car park, but when pub was built I don't think they had the present day volume of traffic in mind.

Great beer in a nice friendly atmosphere. I believe CAMRA approve of it too.
