please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My girlfriend and i popped into this place during a walk along the teign estuary.
We did'nt eat here and as it was a lovely day we sat outside drinking in the sunshine.
The setting as said many times before is lovely and if only drinking i would recommend staying outside as inside is more of a restaurant.

8/10

Went there again last month. I can't understand the negative comments regarding the service as each time I've been it has been quick and friendly. I would imagine this suffers at peak times but that's common in all places. It's not cheap that's for sure and for a 3 course meal with drinks you have to be looking at at least 30 a head. The food is good and the setting is superb.

Meal service is slow, a wait of well over an hour after we had been shown to our table before we actually got our meals.

Rhubarb and apple crumble pie minimalistic, very thin and lacking content.

Not cheap.

Muzak interferes with conversation during your meal. Staff not allowed to reduce volume.

This establishment is not really a pub, but a restaurant with a bar attached to it.

This pub is in such a beautiful setting by the river, and its a big pub too so it gets very busy. Alas the staff from the manager downwards dont seem to be able to cope.
It's a mitchel & Butler house (I believe) although understandably they dont promote it as such. Anyway they have the same sort of standards of service that you would expect to receive at a sizzling steak type of estate pub (ie poor) so the whole place suffers accordingly.
It's been refurbed recently, and done well except for the toilet doors which seem to be made out of an old garden shed; strange

I've visited this place a number of times now, the last time last Sunday evening. The food was good, hot and the service excellent. the young girl, Amber i think it was, was friendly and helpful and we had a really great time as we watched the sun go down over the river. I would certainly go there again.

Have been visiting this pub on and off for the best part of 50 years. We thought we would call in and see what it is like after Brewers Fayre and although the setting is stunning, and the decor is good, the service leaves a lot to be desired. We waited at the bar for drinks and although it was not at all busy none of the 3 bar staff seemed to want to serve us. No eye-contact, no 'Sorry to keep you, I'll be with you in a moment'. After waiting nearly 10 minutes and when all the bar staff left the area without serving us, we walked out and will not be back.

big big pub. Great view over the river. My pint or 2 of Doom Bar (sharps) was great. The only ale though, so wouldnt spend a whole session here.

a group of six adults went to this pub on sunday evening.
the food was wonderful and extremely good value.
What a great place ! Tastefully laid out and amazing waterside location.
My only gripe was that there was only one real ale on offer
and more importantly the staff could"nt get rid of us quick enough !
We ordered at 7.30pm under pressure from the waitress.
When we left at 9.20pm they had already started turning the lights off !
Shame, apart from the cold welcome everything else was excellent.

What a lovely pub/restaurant, so refreshing to have one like it in the local area, puts all the others to shame! My food was delicious, I had calves liver and my wife had something off the specials board, all the plates were clean and warm and the food was delicious and well presented. The food tastes as if it's prepared by a top head chef! The service was excellent, of a much higher standard than anywhere else locally, I had a young lad (Richard?) serving me, said he was at university, very polite and willing and have a chat and to help but not intrusive. I cannot understand some of the reviews here, you musn't know what you're talking about! Great pub, would recommend to any friend or family for any occassion!

what a great place since its change of owners, a very busy waterside pub with great views.my food was fresh and tasty and the service was first class.

welcome to catering... a place like the coombe cellars would never survive if it allowed people to drink all night in the restaurant area. It needs to have a clear black/white policy on this. Additionally, at 6pm, the window seats are taken up by this time. I would strongly, strongly suggest that this was the case on this particular night, as opposed to '6' people being in the whole pub. 7.60 is not an expensive price to pay for two glasses of wine, there are many, many places that offer worse quality wine at a much less reasonable price. the fact that the CC is so popular just proves to me what a good establishment it is.

I was seriously looking for the hidden cameras during my experience in this establishment because the host was so rude I thought I had stumbled into a reality tv or prank show. On arrival at 6pm the place had about six customers in total, and myself, partner, two five year olds, one 12 yr old and the grandparents sat outside to enjoy the river. Our drinks were massively overpriced, 7.20 for two glasses of wine, and the service frosty.

The owner or host came outside and began to put down all the large parasols even though we were sheltering from the rain. We moved to inside which seats several hundred but was empty, and sat at a table by the window. The host then came over and made a fuss that one of our children was sat behind us drawing a picture. He was unceremoniously removed as the table was needed!?!? Our glasses were then hurriedly collected before we had finished, and we were starting to get the hint, but subtlety vanished altogether when a junior member of staff came and told us that our table would need to be vacated if a diner wanted it. Still, all around us was empty and we had spent a lot of money on drinks. Our children were sat quietly with us, drawing pictures.

Before the hour was up we were literally hounded out of this practically empty pub, and my parents who are in their sixties had been looking at the menu and planning to stay for dinner, but changed their minds and went on elsewhere.

There is a sign outside saying 'Welcome'.... what a joke! For all the fancy decor the staff and owner are simply rude. If tables are reserved for diners only then that should be made clear, but paying customers should not be treated like rubbish, no matter how pretty the view. My advice, go down the river to Shaldon where there are plenty of super friendly alternatives who will be pleased to see you.

We booked a table for 9 with a view and we got a table with a view but rather a poor one at the end of the restaurant and the best tables with a view vacant. The service was very slow although they were very helpful and pleasant. We arrived at 1.00 and didnt finish until 3.15 even though it was not crowded. Food was mediocre - beer battered haddock was soaked in oil with slimey batter, good chips, salad instead of mushy peas (yuk) wasnt even a garnish quantity. Burger was overdone and not eaten. Two baby scallops as a starter - not impressed. Cheese was 6.50 for three little portions of unidentified origin - one was dried up mousetrap - all from fridge so tasteless.
Very good wines but no desert wines.
Shame as very welcoming and not expensive but just really rather poor.

I think I can call myself a local... having seen Coombe Cellars change hands at least 5 times.... it's present incarnation looks good on the outside with those magnificent views visible from a very elegant bar, but here is where the praise has to end. My wife and I visited on a Friday evening and found the 'new exciting' menu very ordinary, and the service poor; the fault was with the training not the staff, who were valiant in their attempts to please.
The dishes, when they finally arrived, were quite awful, and a sending back did not improve matters at all, there was tasteless miniature portions of duck on soggy salad, cold plates under hot food and the clotted cream was a lie. The drinks were served apallingly late and the bill was just too much.
We look forward to either a restructuring or a change of ownership again.... it's such a beautiful place.

I've visited coombe cellars since childhood,(now 40],
I'ts always been a favourite haunt for the whole family, it was great to take kids there who could burn off energy while the adults had a quiet meal and drink, the food was always traditional and satisfying, just as you'd expect in such a location.
What a transformation!! The decor was fantastic with open fires and the smell of burning logs extremely welcoming, but I'm afraid that was the only possitive, I think it's a good idea to keep a menu simple, but I feel it should be less fanciful. My husband had grilled chicken sandwich with sundried tomatoe mayo, and chips. We expected it to be served in a soft freshly sliced bloomer bread, instead it was extremely thin dried out bread, perhaps I'm a little ignorant and it was a speciality bread, whatever,it just wasn't tasty, the garnish left much to be desired, a little coleslaw would have been nice for the price, and the chips could have been better.
As for my meal, well I'm afraid I didn't see anything I fancied, I just had a drink.
So we obviously wont be back, luckily we didn't take our 2 young children there , a beatiful view unfortunately doesn't entertain them for long!
It would be interesting to know if they are receiving more buisness since changing the exterior and menus so dramatically,if they are then good for them, if not, they know what to do.

I stumbled on this site whilst searching for something else and have been amazed by the reviews I've read, so much in fact that I've registered just to say how much I enjoyed my visit there this evening. The minute my husband and I walked in we were impressed with the stylish decor and atmosphere. We were immediately welcomed, shown to a lovely table overlooking the river and quickly served. The food was obviously freshly cooked and there was no problem with portion size or temperature. I can't understand why we need every "pub" to have "nugget 'n chips" and a soft play area before we think it's any good. Isn't there room for different styles? It is very different from before, not an obvious "fun house for Kids"(and before you think I haven't got kids, you're wrong), but would it hurt the kids to eat real food for a change!
We really had a pleasant evening and my husband is hoping to take his office there over the Christmas period.
Go on, give it a try - it was well worth it!

It all started off so well right up until we took a look at the food menu and sat down to eat.

The pub is nice enough, The settings is great but the food is not worth going back for. It was cold and the portions were shocking. I had the Fish of the Day which was Tuna... It tasted like it was frozen the night before, I could not even taste the fish because of the overpowering tastes of the sauces they pilled on top. My partner had the Roast of the day and she was equally unimpressed with it. We won't be going back, It took 5 hours for the taste of my meal to stop repeating on me...... As for the choices on the menu... There were none!....

The fish of the day was meant to be 'market bought'.... When was the last time anyone caught a Tuna off of Teignmouth estuary!

Keep it simple please and stop trying to be something you are not.
If you want to survive the winter trade you will have to start pleasing us locals...If not I can see another change in ownership coming before the summer.

What a shame. Beautifully refurbished and great setting. This pub has never had what it takes and even under new management and no longer owned by Brewers Fayre, it still hasn't got it! Waiter argued when our bread and olive oil and balsamic came with the meal instead of before with drinks. Staff seem very young and dopey and food very average. It's so easy to do right - just do it !!

O.K. I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight.
We have just returned from a break in Devon and had the privilege of dining at the Coombe Cellars on a regular basis over the past week, and we cant wait to return to the area.
Whilst there are some people who do not like the changes made to this establishment, we feel it has changed for the better. . . . (Nice one M& B!!!)
True, it is no longer geared so much for the little ones, nor is the food fresh from the microwave, packet, tins or any other place where nasty processed food can come from.
The Coombe Cellars now offers Great food, fresh food that is full of flavour and that is always cooked from proper fresh ingredients and the quantity is more than adequate for the average adult.
The staff are friendly, warm and welcoming and we found that nothing was too much trouble for them. The views from the rear of the establishment across the estuary are stunning especially at sunset, which makes the place worth a visit if just to enjoy a quiet drink at the end of the day.
So its out with the old and INN with the new, and as the old saying goes you cant please everybody all of the time, but we enjoyed the experience and will be recommending it to all that we meet.

Keep up the good work Coombe Cellars.

I visited the pub for the first time since it changed hands , and wished i hadn't. The staff didnot know what beers were on sale and my wife had to have three attemps at ordering food, the first two choices were off on sunday evening? My salmon and prawn salad was disgusting.I was very disappointed with the whole set-up and won't be going back in a hurry

we have been in the Coombe Cellars on a number of occasions and have visit once since i was takin over, the decor is lovely but the menu is very limited and the place is not at all child friendly we were informed by the staff that the palce was no longer child friendly but child tollerant, what a disgrace.
there were five of us in our party and 2 of us had the Plaice and scampi goujons which came with a tiny bowl of fries and a bit of lettuce, one had the sausage and mash with onion marmalade, you could see at least 3 strips of onion , one had a chicken and stuffing on soda bread and ordered fries on the side, the portion of fries were a little bigger but the menu did not state it was an open sandwich and there was no top! the other party had just fries and rustic breadm the rustic bread was 2.50 and was just 4 chunks of crusty bread, we were shocked to say the least, the place is probably wanting to attract a more decerning customer with its fancier menu and I hope they get it but we will never go again and I warn families there is no menu for kids so to speak.
The prices are high too and porions very small.

Marvellous location, no longer a Brewers Fayre, staff ok but portion size and quality of the food was diabolical and very expensive with little choice and virtually nothing for veggies.
derekr - 19 Apr 2007 11:08
An excellent location but were very disappointed by both the staff service and food portion size. The staff were all very young and seemed more interested in their social lives than taking our orders. The garlic bread was a rip off and obviously straight from the freezer. The potential for this pub is huge - sadly, the current execution is dire.
Lissimon - 16 Sep 2006 00:17
Spectacular location right on the river which largely makes up for the fact that its a Brewers Fayre. Very popular but a sod to get to down narrow lanes. Staff seem a bit more mature than the usual run of BF adolescents which means the service is good as opposed to annoying. Don't waste your money on the 'Surf and Turf' - if thats what a King Prawn is then it must be a bloody small kingdom.
