please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Fine selection of ales. Either full of character or a bit scruffy depending on your point of view.

Takes a bit of finding if you do not know the area. Head for custom house.

Great place with enthusiastic landlord. Although we couldn't stay long, he was holding a beer fest with meet the brewers evening. There were 9 handpulls so I guess that even on a non beer fest day there would be plenty to choose from. The building is on the slopes leading to the river about 5 minutes walk from the Market Place and about the same distance up steam from the ferry from North Shields.

BTW the information on rail metro etc at top is outdated. Take metro system into South Shields Town Centre, then head toward Market, then simply turn toward MIll Dam past St Hilda's church, & large 24hr Asda Store, past the Riverside pub. Or make bee line for Customs House or Ferry landing and you can't go far wrong (both signposted)

Joe the landlord has tackled the male toilet problems and its regularly got toilet blocks -and as an added help there's a automated sensor on the wall dispensing pongy stuff -but occasionally needs a hand with an extra press of the button ..LOL. In addition, the duke box can download your choice of music from the web (takes a while though), and there's now another flat screen TV at the right of the bar to compliment the large screen at the far end. Never a bad pint served and recently the 3rd time in a row regional CAMRA winner in 2011. Shipbuilding and marine memorabilia everywhere and if your ex navy your ships crest is sure to be there.

Superb pub. Great choice of beers (real ales) and usual lagers. Basic choice of food but this is a drinking place! if you want something to eat go to near by ocean road for a smashing curry.
The staff are always very friendly the pubs visitors always seem to be canny and occasionally very amusing. Excellent jukebox, plenty of interesting and weird stuff to look at on the walls and ceiling (flag collection).9/10.

My South Shields crawl had started to improve drastically at the Trimmers Arms (not listed on here) and peaked here at the Steamboat. Of the 14 I tried, this was the best. Real ales were Everards Tiger & Original, Greene King Abbot Ale, Deuchars IPA, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Wells Bombardier and Okells Red. Westons Old Rosie is the cider. The barmaid and customers were all friendly. The interior is fascinating with walls crammed full of clocks and shields and cabinets also packed with various items. The pub is nearly all wood, from the floors to the walls and the bar itself. A collection of flags can be seen on the ceiling. The pub seems to have won plenty of CAMRA awards and I would say it is a deserved winner of the current CAMRA local pub of the year.

Traditional character pub, a short walk from the ferry landing in the conservation area of town. It's deceptively long and large, with two main areas, a lower bar area and a higher area at the back with several different rooms. Both areas are packed with maritime memorabilia and a vast array of clocks, which gives a lot of character to the place, as does the dark wood panelling and traditional furnishings throughout.
Beer-wise it's excellent, with 6 handpumps providing microbrewed ales from near and far. On my visit a dark beers festival had just finished, and these featured heavily. All i tried were excellent.
This is the best pub in South Shields and one of the best on Tyneside, and as such you should try to get here.

This is truly an excellent pub. Nice blend of locals and beer tickers. Nooks and crannies galore - tons of interesting tat and keen interested bar staff. Negatives? It's a tough one but if I tried really hard I would moan that in a narrow 'galley' bar - allowing customers to sit blocking access thru the bar area AND to the bar itself could be considered short sighted. Oh and the toilets were tiny given size of pub and therefore smelled - not in a nice way.

Only real character pub left in Shields CAMRA regional winner past two years. Superb range of beers and helpful staff and a freindly atmosphere gauranteed. Only negative point -the mens toilets are a disgrace -take a gas mask and wear gloves...

This is a fabulous pub and well worth the visit. Being in the minority (an under 30 and southern) at this establishment it could have gone the way of many "traditional" pubs I have been in, but everyone there was very welcoming and the bar staff especially. I now use this as my "local", despite being several miles away. The beer is well kept and always tasty, with a variety of guest ales changing regularly and an occasional mini festival to spice things up. Joe the landlord and his dog Betty are always on hand, and the manager Cath has an amazing knowledge of her beers - she has never failed to impress when recommending a beer to me.

A pub not to be missed close to the river and market. Lots of maritime regalia and a ghost in this gem. Friendly and enthusiastic bar maid who knows her beer.

Lovely old pub fitted out with a strong nautical theme. Eight ales on handpum, the landlords were very friendly and helpful with regard to discussing the various beers on offer. Comfortable environment and handy for the ferry terminal.

Known many years ago as the Locomotive. In one of the most historic parts of the town, shares the cobbled Mill Dam with the old Customs House (now converted into a highly successful theatra/cinema/restaurant), the merchant navy monument and a couple of other less appealing pubs.

I used to work here about 10 years ago when it was a Vaux house - before that brewery went the way of so many others and closed its doors for good.

I remember serving a variety of real ales to interested customers. Busy on weekends with an older crowd (very few under 30s to be seen, at least back then).

I note it is still Good Beer Guide and CAMRA listed so obviously they are still doing things right.

I wonder of Joe Mooney is still landlord and if Davie Joe is still running the bar?
