user reviews of the White Star Tavern, Southampton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Large and well built corner location building. It is and feels like a cross between a hotel and a pub so the name Tavern feels appropriate. Several distinct open areas around a central bar. A mix of flag stone and solid oak flooring. Fire places and leather sofas. Opens early and does food all day. Children accepted. A comfy and pleasant place; upmarket but relaxed and informal
Over £4 for a pint. Regular beer is Itchen Valley White Star. Also does a changing cask - on my visit it was Landlord. The White Star was tired and not fresh. Overall a pleasant pub worth checking out if in the area, but it's nothing special, and beer cost and condition prohibits a strong recommendation

Beer excellent. Was a choice of Ringwood or Tribute (St Austell brewery) when I was there.

Food was excellent too although you need all 3 courses to feel full - by which time it isn't cheap.

Seem to have some very pretty staff and clientele too which is always pleasant.

Highly recommended.

Situated on trendy Oxford Street, which passes for upmarket bohemian in this rather soulless city, the White Star Tavern is a pleasant bar/restaurant which also doubles as a Hotel with some 'boutique' style rooms upstairs.

Inside its all polished leather and tasteful wood furnishing, and busy with suits (such as myself, in this instance) after work. This place is unlikely to become a BITE favourite, with only 2 ales on - Ringwood Best and Palmers Dorset Gold, a tasty golden ale which I quaffed two pints of (though at 3.10 a pop I'd expect quality). Standard lagers e.g. San Miguel are available but the emphasis of this place, as evidence by the carefully arranged bar area, is on cocktails and exotic spirits.

It was highly enjoyable to sit outside as Oxford Street has very little traffic and my only gripe would be with the staff, who seemed more interested in flirting with female clientele than serving me, but otherwise this is quite a nice bar and I'd happily go again.

Decent and not especially expensive food is the high point here and there is nothing to complain about with the service. Located on a pleasant street in a city not overly blessed by urban planning, this is worth a stopover, but the light wood and jazz (nice) is all a bit too much like a David Brent music video for my liking. A good pint of Ringwood though.

Realy good food not as expensive as expected, given where it is. Also makes for a grate place to stop off before going to any of the other good restaurants in the street.

Best food in the street if you ask me! And they're really friendly in there. Just booked our work xmas party with them. The menu looks soooo yummy!

This Gastro Pub is brilliant! you might think is slightly pricey but the food is to die for and definately worth it! Although this is a very high quality establishment they manage to wrap it up in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Real friendly and great for the full on candle light dinner as well as lunch or just a drink after work.
