Dived in here to get away from the shuffling Portobello road madding crowd. Nice decor, comfy seats, decent beers and PEACE.

Another pub like so many others in the area that are void of any character. Beer was fine but if this is your idea of a good pub then your life must be dull.

I went to this pub on Saturday lunchtime 15/05/2010, to meet friend and have a drink and something to eat.
The food took over an hour to arrive- our order had clearly been lost. When this was pointed out, the staff were very unhelpfuland disinterested. One of our party ordered Sea Bass, what arrived was clearly not Sea Bass, but an oily fish- possibly Herring. When this was pointed out to the staff, we received a very hostile response. The food that I had ordered was delivered twice, not as I har ordered- I just wanted a plain burger- firstly got one with bacon, and then one with cheese- I had to go to another pub in order to eat.
I have been using this pub for over 40 years, and have never had such a bad experience. The attitude is clearly that they have a captive audience of tourists, so the quality of service and food is irrelevant, because people will probably not visit again. What is going on in this pub will just confirm to visitors, the bad reputation that the UK has for food and service.
I would advise everyone to go to the Earl of Lonsdale, a much nicer pub in every way.

Very overpriced tourist trap. Surprisingly dirty and grubby inside and, according to my wife, the ladies loos are disgusting with the floors awash with some 2" of (we hope) water. Had a pint of Hydes Brewery's Finders Keepers (the only ale) which was pretty good. The place this Saturday lunchtime was full of young , mostly female 'student' types who were occupying all the available seating but nearly all had empty glasses and none were eating. While I was standing there drinking my pint at least 20 people came in, looked at the menus, looked around at all the occupied seats and turned and walked out again - the management of this place must be mad!

This is just around the corner from Notting Hill Gate Tube. We went on a Thursday night and it was busy but not packed, so we could chat and all sit together. The seating is big leather sofas and posh red and gold chairs - comfortable and looks inviting. Chandeliers are a nice touch. Friendly bar staff, decent list of food and nibbles (snacks like onion rings are about 2.50, but this is is Portobello). Also has lots of copies of the wine list, which is pretty good. The Sauv Blanc at 5 a glass is decent, and even the cheapy house white is palatable. One last thing - the music played was right up my street, a mix of mild 90s (You're Still My Sunshine), Lilly Allen and the Scissor Sisters, etc. I also heard that there's a very attractive garden (it was cold when we went, so we stayed in). Totally recommended but don't expect a cheap night!

Regularly visit this pub if in Notting Hill, used to have a great Open Mike night on Tuesdays, remember a young American Girl serenading her boyfriend Darryl one night. It truely was amazing.

Unfortunately the open mike night has now finished.

Food worth a try!!!

Did Darryl ever ask her to marry him????

Pleasant busy pub. Full of tourists on saturday but nonetheless seems to function well.

Nice garden and playing some decent music.

Have been popping into the Sun regularly for the past 5 years, and for the first time the staff seem friendly! On my last visit in 2006 there was a miserable manager and even more miserable staff. It is the best pub in the area, no question. What it lacks in size it makes up for in personality.
The beer is well looked after, the guy working told me that they have just recieved a cask marque, and reasonably priced for Portobello. Food is good, if a little uninspired, and service is fast, even when busy (due to the size of the pub, one suspects). DO NOT MISS THE GARDEN - very secluded but beautiful.

went on a Tuesday night expecting a quiet pub ..but was heaving ..could be bad ..but wasn't as staff very welcoming and atmosphere great ..reason for busyness was open mic music session that was excellent (in places) ..had some food that was great and good value ..highly recommended

Was pleasant on my visit. Very studenty feel. Looked like a garden or something out back.

Worth a look in...

Does have a slight coffee shop feel but inevitable given the postcode...

But seems to work fairly well. Good service, pleasant decor and quite charming.

A warm handshake and a cheery 7.

Had a bit of a "crawl" around the area recently, can't remember this one in particular as they all seemed a bit "coffee shop", but I know I was there because I picked up a nice postcard with a price list on the back. The one fact I can tell you is that the Carling is cheaper in here than in the Beehive in Swindon....go figure!!

This is a relaxed corner pub with a small range of beers including Friuli (one of the few times I've ever seen that put forward as a 'main' beer! I suspect the beers on the counter tap vary regularly.) In a way it's as much a cafe'-that-sells-beer as a pub but sometimes that is what you want, and it isn't really a concept we have in the UK so it could be hard to get a handle on. The people there certainly seemed ok. As to the barstaff, the young woman who served me was sympathetic to my lack of familiarity with the brews on offer. It is all a bit Notting Hill, but then it is in Notting Hill so what do you expect? Dalston?

I've drank in this pub on and off for 20 years, never has quality staff, always look as if thet were a little short in the brain call department.and its the type of pub where I want to get out before my pint is drank,,,,no good for regulars, gets a lot of passing trade from the tourists ,who dont know any better anyway and they wont be staying in the area anyway, and after visiting this pub I'm sure that they are glad to get back to their own country

An accommodating enough pub - a wide and carefully chosen range of beers and some interesting food options combine in a smoke free welcoming atmosphere. The beer garden is not the largest or most scenic of open spaces, more like an old dank alleyway filled with mismatched and somewhat busted armchairs, but it is a good place to relax away from the hordes that rampage daily through Notting Hill pillaging and destroying all in their path. Also possibly the only pub I know where some of the bar snacks cost more than I would normally expect to pay for a pint! Bah! I pour scorn at your bowls of olives and seeds and 3 bags of chill nuts. What's wrong with a 30p bag of nuts, some Quavers and a pair of braised pig's trotter?!

Reasonable price, nice beergarden, ok food, pinball machine, nice atmosphere - and probably the rudest staff in the area. Such a shame, there was a great potential but few of the barmen/maid ever smile and I heard one of them openly laugh at one of the customer who had trouble ordering some food. I've been there many times to give it a chance, but won't go again.

Nice looking pub, had good range of standard lagers as well as speciality beers. food menu was good and the roast filled me up. tall bald bloke behind the bar had me laughing from the minute I walked in. only pub i've been to in the area that is a) non smoking (which was so nice - even though I smoke) and b) has a pinball machine. Haven't seen one in a pub for ages so couldn't resist putting a fiver in. will definately come back and recommend to friends. nice atmosphere, nice staff, nice range of drinks at reasonable prices (i had carling for 2.55 and my g.f vodka/coke for 2.50)
