Pretty tremendous - gorgeous dark wood interior and lots of nooks and crannies while it is set back from a lovely village green atop a hill. Nearish to the Ridgeway, it's a hard pub to have a pint at given the lack of public transport options nearby and, on this occasion, the ale selection was a little unimaginative and lacking in local options. Roast chicken and a halloumi salad went down well and the garden is also a quiet arbour.

First stop on a trip to the Chilterns yesterday was the Lions of Bledlow, supposedly so called as there were 2 pubs here both with Lion in the name. The interior is dark and beamed. There were 5 real ales - Reunion Opening Gambit, Great Heck Trafalgar, Tring Pale Four, Cotleigh Tawny Owl & Wadworth 6X. I was torn about what to order and the barman recommended the Opening Gambit. I took him up on the recommendation. But it wasn't really my type of ale. The table next to us had followed us in and their salads arrived promptly. A nice country pub seemingly popular with cyclists, possibly from the nearby Phoenix Trail.

Good range of local ales, decent food and not too expesive for the area, bar service friendly but a bit chaotic.

i do really love heading out to bledlow to spend an hour or two in the lions.not only is it a really beautifull building nestled at the end of the wonderfully picturesque village, but the beer is top rate aswell. at least 3 constanlty rotating beers, which usually include something local (thame, tring, chiltern, malt, xt, etc.)

the walking is fantastic from here aswell, so its a great place to head off and finnish up at for a sunday ramble

On previous visits there has been a good spread of 5 different ales but last night there was a lacklustre offering of 3 Wadworth beers, 6X, Ipanema and Swordfish and Upham Sprinter with the Doom Bar pumpclip turned round although nowadays it tastes like syrup anyway. Maybe that was why the pub was not very busy which it invariably has been in the past and why we are unlikely to be hurrying back. An overall disappointing experience which I hope is a one-off.

The Lions deserves a higher rating than it is presently given. Three of us called there today at 1.30pm; although they were only doing main Sunday meals (so no sandwiches), there was a good choice of ploughmans lunches- they were ample, a pleasure to eat, and the service speedy and friendly. The staff provided more bread without demur. There were five beers available, and what I had was well up to standard. I havent been there for about twenty years, but will make another visit sooner than that!

A great pub inside & out, don't know about the food but the Channel Islands Liberation ale was pretty decent, they also had Theakstons Black Bull bitter, Wadworth 6X and I think one other. Price was 3/pint

Very pretty pub in the lovely village of Bledlow, lots of different seating areas, and very low beams. Five changing real ales on, usually well kept. But, as they only ever have one guy working the bar it can take ages to get service. The food, takes ages, expensive and is a bit lackluster. Just one or two more staff and bit more effort on the food and this would be a 10/10 pub.

Good pub. Didn't have anything to complain about, unlike other posters.
Good range of ales (except that I didn't notice a mild/stout/porter - why have five bitters?). Food arrived in good time. Nice garden out the back. Dogs allowed.
All in all, a very nice pub in a cracking location.

Yes, the signs on the wall do say you have to give a table number and there aren't any numbers.

Fantastic pub, lovely building in a beautiful part of the world! this pub has a great atmosphere and is one of the best pubs i've been in. The ales were good and in very good order and the staff couldn't do enough to help us. the food was also very good, i had a steak which was cooked to perfection! and it was very tasty. just a superb hostelry.

Visited on a Sunday lunchtime. The service was friendly and efficient. The food (I ordered Provincal Veg Lasagne) was very poor value at 8.50 (where do they get these prices from?). Tiny helping and the pasta was not fully cooked. Ploughman's looked better value at 6.50. I drank Deuchars which was OK. The pub was plastered with notices instructing eaters that food could only be ordered with a table number: the tables did not appear to have numbers. Ho hum.. I think I'll try somewhere else next time.

went here last year. It was comedy at the the bar, a lone eastern european chap was barely coping with the lunchtime rush. fortunately we were not in a hurry and ordered some food which did take an hour to arrive but was actually acceptable. mind you it takes a bit to cock up a ploughmans and a mushroom stroganoff. poked head in the door the other day - looks like same management. Shame because it's a nice pub in a lovely setting. The garden is scruffy and needs some attention.

Lovely Pub. Lovely location. Great views outside. Inside all wood and fantastic large real fire. Good condition of beer and good selection. Sadly let down by polite but cold staff and the food? Don't bother ordering. It was expensive and the quality was awful. The rib eye steak was over 13 and was tough and mostly overcooked with frozen chips. Cottage pie looked meatless or was equivalent to tesco blue stripe meat and sloppy, watery mash what their was of it and a crusty burnt top. Such a shame, if it wasn't for the staff and food this would be a fantastic proper old english pub. A double shame, as Freehouses have a tough enough time anyway. Scored low due to staff and food only.

Visited on a Monday lunchtime - what a wonderful pub! Lovely old fashioned decor, beer perfect (tried 6X and Pride - well kept and room temperature), excellent selection of food (6 veggy options - the ones we tried were top notch); dog friendly (we were invited to let our dog roam around the pub); superb friendly relaxed service.....

The Lions of Bledlow sure is a wonderfull place. The building sure tells a story. The owner Mark Mckeown is a great person himself. If i could choose a place too relax and meet the locals wich completes the story it would be THE LIONS OF BLEDLOW!!!!! I miss you all very much....... I would recomend the Lions to anyone who is openminded and not an old farttt.

Nip along to the Shepherd's Crook at Crowell, only 2 or 3 miles. Beer, food and staff will reach the mark I think you will find.

I have to agree about the comments about the staff, most are impolite at best.
I've been server off beer and told "its real ale its supposed to taste like that", I know my beers, shame they don't.

I've heard it may have been taken over, can anyone confirm?

Visited the Lions today. Nice pub, lovely building, very warm and snug inside. Traditional olde style English country pub.
Bar service....shocking. Absolutely shocking.

Rude, snappy, got the impression that they really couldn't be bothered. Once they'd sold you a pint then they forget about you and move straight onto the next customer.

Food was OK, but nothing special for nearly 9 quid.

Took forever to come too. Desert was tasty but ultimately naff.

Heard one gent politely ask for another beer as his was not right, to be met with indifference and the sort of attitude that shouted "we've got your money now, and now we don't care".

I wouldn't go back, and I'd suggest that if anyone is considering having lunch there, to seriously reconsider.

Terrible staff attitude, followed by pub removing comments on another review site, slow service, snappy staff, terrible guiness.

I think Your Pub Is Pooh :o)
