The Crown was closed on our Saturday lunchtime visit. It looks like they're looking for new tenants.

After some while of going down-hill, this pub has been given a new lease of life having been bought by the experienced team of Ian and Marilyn Blackmore. We visited at the end of June 2015 for an open mic night, and the place had plenty of atmosphere and after some Jazz-orientate music (not my cup of tea really) we had some acapella and other varieties. Beer? St Austell. Price? Well we paid £2.70 for 'Trelawney' - severely bargainous, and later as another beer came on it was just £2.40. Quality of the beer was excellent - Ian is proud of his cellar and no-one else is allowed to touch it! Deffo going again - hopefully to eat.

They were serving Spitfire and Butcombe when I droped in. Tried the Butcombe and happy to say all good!!! This is another old 'Bass House' from back in the day. Sad to say, time has not been good to this old pub. Although clean and tidy, it lacks......something. I guess I found it slightly 'sterile'. Still - 6/10

As a change from my usual sunday lunchtime visits I decided to come in on a Monday night. The beer was like wine and the food was some of the best pub food I have tasted anywhere. Service was in the traditional style and very welcome. I urge you to give it a go, you wont be disappointed.

Popped in here with family for a sunday lunch between Christmas and new year. And, I have to say although the menu was severly limited and dominated by fish dishes the welcome was warm and the beer though not outstanding was very acceptable. What was't acceptable was the schoolgirl waitress who although very pretty and friendly was as dim as a TocH lamp. The place was rammed out, and I thought the speed with which the food came was very commendable considering the vast numbers in there for lunch.
Overall, I think they do a good job in here which is just as well as without it there is no serious alternative in Sherborne.
Give it a go.

Perhaps it was the wrong time of day, perhaps it was the wrong day, perhaps it was me - I found the staff a bit distant and the beer was distinctly average.

A least there trying to make an effort here, which is more than can be said of any other pub in town.
Beer (butcombe) was nothing special, but generally a friendly welcome.

This is the first pub you come to in Sherborne as you ease off the accelerator after escaping from Yeovil. Thirsty or Hungry? Dont pass this by. The Ales are varied and well kept and the grub is fresh, well prepared and reasonably priced. The pub itself is cosy and well maintained. What realy counts here is the friendliness of the landlord, his wife and their staff and the tip top service. Nothing was too much trouble and when we were there the landlord was entertaining some kids with magic tricks. My Mrs wanted to change our nipper and the landlady opened up the function room where it would be 'more comfortable'. How many boozers would do that? Certainly no others in Sherborne thats for sure.
