Now totally demolished. When are BeerintheEvening going to mark it as 'closed'?
Trequites - 12 Aug 2011 18:28
closed - no great loss to the real ale drinking world.

Hi,trequites, bad news the pub has already closed down, I went past today and it`s been boarded up, it didn`t even stay open for the final matches of the world cup.

Yes we are re-open as an Irish Bar and although some users believe this to be outdated we believe that the best pub atmospheres are created in an Irish Bar. We have Seamus O Donnells in Torquay and you would probably not get through the door after 9pm on a Saturday night in the Summer.
We will be having live music every weekend, midweek Karaoke, Quiz nights for cash and prizes and a battle of the bands to start soon.
All I would say is don't knock it til you've tried it!!

Just when you thought that the fake 'Irish Bar' had finally died out, Exeter catches up with the rest of the world - The Artful Dodger has reopened as 'Seamus O'Donnells - The Irish Bar'.
It says that it is Exeter's No. 1 Irish Bar - that's because it's the only one in Exeter, if not the UK.
It is difficult to imagine the mentality of the marketing people who came up with the idea of an Irish bar in 2009. The last one I can remember in Exeter was what is now The Farmers Union, about two marketing reincarnations ago.
I suppose it will have ice cold (i.e.too cold) Guinness, like they drink it in Ireland. Maybe Harp lager and that horrible tasteless Caffreys as well.
It's unlikely to be able to compete for the custom of the real ale drinkers or those looking for cheap beer - there are the Imperial and the Great Western nearby - but it promises live music every weekend so it might just succeed with those who don't want to venture over the river to the Village Inn in Exwick.
I give it a year before it changes to something else or closes down.

I visited Exeter University on an exchange program a few years ago and ended up staying in a dormitory not too far from the Artful Dodger. While I was told initially to avoid this pub by students, eventually I found myself going for a pint one afternnon. This pub, while lacking obscure/higher quality beers, more than makes up for it with the vast wealth of characters who frequent it on a daily basis. It's been four years since I set foot inside the dodger, but I recall those days with fond memories. I could regale the forum with tales of Uncle Kev, Therese, Steve, Lee, and Barney the dog, but I will save those for my memoirs. If you have a minute for a sneaky pint while waiting for a train, or if you are an exchange student studying at Exeter University, I highly recommend you stop at this pub. While people may not roll out a red carpet for you, as long as don't embarass yourself, try to pretend you're something you're not, or otherwise make yourself appear stereotypically American, you can meet some incredibly interesting folks. There is seating outside as well, and a reasonably stocked jukebox. Cheers and I hope the Dodger is under the same ownership.

I visited several times when visiting Exeter last month. No real ale,keg John Smith's BUT three ciders on handpump including Weston's Old Rosie plus a couple of farmhouse ciders in plastic containers. The farmhouse ciders are seriously strong. It looks like an utter dump but is in fact very friendly.

The Dodger is currently for sale (according to an article in the 'Express & Echo', 12th Feb 2009)..

Doesn't seem to be open anymore. I've heard a rumour that it's closed 'for refurbishment'.

Visited on several occasions now in the hope that the experience will improve.
Pub is one of 3 located across the road from Exeter St Davids Station,(So ideal 4 a quick beer while waiting 4 a connection).
Not had a refurb in years and is looking a bit tatty round the edges.
Friendly Bar Staff but poor if u like real ale. Only one on tap the last few visits, and each time it's been returned 2 the bar as it resembles vinegar!
Opted 4 a pint of Flowers instead.
My Rating 5/10

Drank here occasionally as a student. It's a bit of a time-warp, but in a nice way. Great burgers and a good pint in an atmosphere which can't have dated much in the last thirty years.

The new landlord here does not encourage students to come into this pub. For better or for worse, this is the situation. Decent beer and food at reasonble, if not cheap prices. Not a bad gaff all in all.

Top notch pub - pool, darts, jukebox, enormous burgers and friendly staff - who could wish for more! Should be avoided by the faceless wonders who think 2 bottles of Reef in a 'Spoons is a night out....

The artful dodger is an up and coming student pub. The beer is resonable, the atmoshphere is great and the food has to be tried. The pub has very friendly bar staff, and equally friendly landlords who are willing to cater for most occassions if they have the means!! If in Exeter, this pub has to be tried!!
