user reviews of the Harbour Moon, West Looe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Yet again new tenants. Nice friendly bar staff. Now serving good food. Three draught ales unfortunately one of them is doom bar. Pub on the up

Not a good place at all.

The place was totally overdone with halloween decorations, not that i have a problem with that but it was the 12th of October! Far too early for that game and it made the place feel awful.

Felt a lttle rough and touristy and no atmosphere whatsoever.
There are far better pubs in Looe than this one, the only thing going for it is the lovely location and views something that almost every other pub in Looe is lacking.

Not a good experience.

3/10

The Harbour Moon is under new ownership and is now open again and has undergone some major works since June 2013. The Bar, Restaurant, Customer Toilets and En-suite rooms have all been refurbished and are looking lovely. With a good selection of real ales and a new menu The Harbour Moon is set for a very bright future.

No surprise to see that the place has gone under again. Lease terminated by Enterprise Inns on 15th Jan (same as the Fishermans Arms incidentally). It is immensely frustrating to see this place failing time after time. I've said it before but it should be knocking the competition out of the park. All it needs is a competent landlord, or more accurately, a competent pub company that don't charge ridiculous lease and rental costs so the lessee has no chance of survival. I sincerely hope somebody with experience can wrestle it off Enterprise and make it into something special that it always should have been.
Lord_Jeffers - 4 Mar 2013 11:59
Doom served from a barrel on the bar was good. Licensee said he had many more complaints when he ran the beer through a line and That keeping it on the bar has been more successful though Sharps (Molson Cours) not too happy. Last drink on a Monday evening so not surprised that it was empty. Guvnor friendly enough, but it felt less of a pub and more of a holiday camp bar.

We visit Looe 3 or 4 times a year and this used to be our favourite pub in town. It has the best views, a good choice of beers, and a well priced menu of quality food.
Sadly changes over the last year or so mean we only visit if the weather is good and we can sit outside. The layout lacks charm and makes the pub feel souless, the bar staff have a couldn't care less attitude and the food is not what it used to be. The bar itself smells of stale beer and the large TV screens are a distraction. I also resent being served food by minors, who the hell thiks that is acceptable??
They also used to do a good selection of beers which were well kept but on the two recent visits there has only been a limited choice of beer with 1 or 2 barrels on the end of the bar, not sure what that is all about.
Overall, the pub is in sad decline and I can fully understand why none of the locals frequent it these days. Bad attitude, bad seating, no atmosphere and management that seem to have lost the plot. (Still the best view though so 3 stars for that)

I am the Bar manager of the Harbour Moon Inn and would like to welcome all pub lovers to visit the pub and judge for themselves what our facilities are, I will give everyone a warm welcome and make sure that their visit is an exceptional one, serving good food and great beer. It is a shame that the pub has received some poor reviews over the last 12 months, the current tennants have tried very hard to make the pub a clean and welcoming place to visit. I would ask all beer in the evening members to try the pub for themselves and form their own opinions rather than listen to some rather uninformed and inaccurate ratings which have appeared on this site in the last 12 months.
My name (unlike many) is John Upton, please ask for me if you have any complaints whilst visiting the pub and I will do my best to rectify them

Speaking as neither landlord nor friend of the landlord, I must say the Harbour Moon has improved noticeably since my last visit here about a year ago. It's been repainted terracotta colour externally - doesn't look too bad - and is in the process of an internal refurbishment as well with tiles just about to be laid according to the barman. The old curved bench seating has gone - I wasn't entirely sure about the high tables and stools running through the centre of the room but it does make for more space. The beer was fine and the barman polite and helpful. Noticed a little shot glass by the pumps so assume you can have a free taster if unsure what to go for. I personally wouldn't use the pub in the evening as Karaoke is a big thing there most nights and I don't enjoy Karaoke, but for a drink during the day, especially when the tide's in, it's a pleasant enough place to while some time away.

i'm sorry to hear about everyones poor time at the harbour moon.. i personally get a lot of compliments off people about the refreshing changes made to the local pub after the last tenants. our aim at the pub is to please everyone from all walks of live and provide live entertainment 7 nights a week, ranging from a jam night to live acts on a sat night. we're the only estsablishment in the vacinity that serves hot volcanic stone steaks fresh to order and the taste is out of this world. if they is anyway you feel it could be improved then feel free to message me and we'll see what we can do. so as you can see ollie123 is not the landlord i am..
Rebeccahampson - 30 Apr 2011 09:25
Oldjamaica is quite right - I assume "Ollie123" is the actual landlord by the tone of his ridiculous review. For the record the pub is still the same dump it ever was and, as others have said on here, a complete waste of THE prime location. Don't waste your time or cash when there are plenty of other pubs around which actually work hard to give their customers value for money.
MarinerBill - 27 Apr 2011 19:56
The comments left 26/2, 27/2 and 28/2 would seem to be from landlord or those close to him. If you want an honest opinion ask any local, even facebook amongst the locals laugh at what a dump this pub has become. I wont say any more other than repeat ask a local. None of them use it and that should tell you something.
Oldjamaica - 15 Mar 2011 18:14
Agree with Midlandale below. This place doesn't know what it wants to be.

It has one of the best sites in town, the best view, and is visible to attract the punters, yet it is an strange mash-up of bar, pub, club, restaurant, sports bar, karaoke bar, etc. Since I last visited the inside has been made over, and all new furniture and upholstery which has made a big improvement.

We were there to catch the Six Nations rugby on a Saturday afternoon and in th past this would have been crowded for that. Not today.

Beer was average, service was adequate, view still spectacular, rugby was quality (England 17-9 France) but it is a lost soul when it should be packing them in.

I think the hot stone steaks are a mistake in the bar (although the meat looked great). The smell just lingers forever as it keeps sizzling long after it was served.

No sign of any kids running about as other posters have noticed, but the place needs a swift kick up the back passage by someone who wants to make the most out of what should be Looe's number one boozer. Lose the karaoke for a start.
Lord_Jeffers - 2 Mar 2011 18:03
first time ever been only to see if comments were ture cause i couldnt beleave a pub could be this bad and i really enjoyed myself with my childeren we even went back that evening for a meal which yes was cheap but didnt taste cheap or look cheap was a very nice meal. the entertainment was brillant made everyone fill welcome which not many pubs do anymore. im only from from plymouth and will be going again. see you in the summer. thank you you for a loverly time
daveplym - 28 Feb 2011 11:12
Wow.... What a change. Not been there in years. It's so clean what a turn around. The food fantastic. Last owners gave our family food poisoning....... The entertainment that eve was karaoke. Was shall we say very impressed, all singers was great. Don't know why there is bad comments. Fab fab fab. Deffinatly go again next year.
Fullofprudence - 27 Feb 2011 20:57
What a fantastic pub!!!! Great staff, great food and a great atmosphere.

They have a great selection of bitters, lagers and soft drinks. The pub is lovely and warm and is really nicely decorated! There are many tv's dotted around the place so you can keep up to date on the sports fixtures, news etc......

Now the food....absolutely fantastic and great value for money not
Overpriced like many other pubs in Looe! They have just started doing homemade pizzas what can I say......FANTASTIC and the HotStone steaks delicious! Yum one of the best pieces of steak I've ever had full of flavor!

Entertainment is fantastic we had a great time
And the kids loved it too! Karaoke, disco, quiz night and EVEN and film night!

Well I can only say good things about the pub I don't know why people are criticizing it, it's just fantastic!

" The toilets are great.....I won't spoil the surprise"

To sum it up am extremely good clean, friendly pub! Will definitely be going back.

Alls I can is I don't know where all these people who have reviewed it been going and you MUST visit the pub!

11+/10

Awful pub, visited this pub many years ago and was great one of the best in Looe on recent trip pub is now rock bottom. Toilets full of mirrors so you watch yourself in the urinals or cubicals. The bar is souless and devoid of customers, certainly no local trade, they must know something?. Didnt try the food looks and priced cheap and nasty. Beer was awful. Pub struggles to know what it wants to be, Pub, Fast food outlet, restaurant, kinder garden or appears to be trying to set itself up as a night club. Staff foul and loud who appear to take their kids to work with them.
midlandale - 23 Feb 2011 19:51
Visted this pub Friday evening 11/2/11 3 yr old child running up and down inside the bar area tipping out drip trays, 9 month old baby behind bar in bouncer constantly screaming its head off . The only member of staff trying to serve and placate the children behind the bar. When doom bar ordered staff member did not pour drink from pump on the bar but disappeared behind bead curtain and mysteriously returned with full pint. The food was absolutely awful and the bar smelt of chip fat, due to steaks on stones. Couldnt drink pint fast enough and escape as did others. Worst pub I have been in by a mile not just for some time but ever. Do yourself a favour and AVOID. Shame as in a lovely position.
Oldjamaica - 14 Feb 2011 17:59
A pub that was once full of character and used by locals. Now freqented by yobs and terrible karaoke singers (if you can call them that)!! Sub-standard beer and staff lacking in personality and conversation! A pub to be missed!
aboutownies - 23 Sep 2010 21:29
1 of my locals , improved hell of a lot. good staff, good atompshere .. worth a visit
avhil - 12 Sep 2010 17:22
I am a little biased as I work in this pub, however, it serves excellent beer, both cask and keg, the food is pub grub but excellent value and quality.

Staff and entertainment seem to me to offer a freindly atmosphere, within a clean environment, the views are second to none !

All in all I would like to say, if you haven't tried it, please do and if you have been dissappointed in the past please give us a second chance, we are trying very hard.
cornishjohn - 27 Jul 2010 01:54
Certainly improved and the Doom, although a bit on the lively side, was ok. Not really my kind of pub with it's karaoke, quizes and disco nights but some people obviously love it.

Good views over the habour and a pleasant welcome from the bar staff gave it a boost.
dagenhamdave - 28 Jun 2010 21:28
I was in here a couple of nights ago and it was such an improvement on previous visits. Very friendly staff and landlord.
We were with our 18 month old grandson who is a double handful, but we were made to feel so welcome even though it was quiz night and the place was the fullest that I have ever seen it.
Thanks again to you all, we'll see you on our next visit.
muzzyofrotherham - 12 Jun 2010 19:17
Open again and I am assured by those who know it is now clean and the beer good. I'll be trying it dreckly...
dagenhamdave - 5 May 2010 15:45
i've just come on here to find out if this place has closed and obviously it has. how on earth can you not make a success of this place??!! it had it all. rooms, pool, sky, food, views, bistro, beer garden, etc. damn this recession and crap landlords.
mph - 24 Mar 2010 22:12
So this hasn't changed much over the years, back in 1998 it was run by an arrogant arse and it seems from the above comments,it is about the same,i would return for another visit but thought i would check that AA had either moved on or died, but seems he must have bred more.
What a waste of a prime location.
The biggest problem with this sort of pub is the disposable customer attitude, theres plenty more where they came from,so abuse them, lose them NEXT !
Nevermind there are many pubs in LOOE and many are welcoming and pleasent, that's why i continue to avoid The Harbour Moon.

realalemonkey - 11 Oct 2009 01:43
Where to start!!!
This place has gone to the dogs! Dogs being the most appropriate word.... run by a complete bulldog of a woman (although saying that we weren't too sure of their actual sex)! Think cross between Steven Tyler and a dirty poodle! Enough to put anyone off their beer!
I had the joys of witnessing all the fool mouthed "gossip girls" at the end of the bar, one of which i believe was the daugther of the owner (again unsure of her sex either... hard to grasp the fact hermaphrodites run twice in one family).....
My wife was in utter shock at the conversations these women were having.... not a place to bring younger family members as would be subjected to the foul language and slutty behaviours of the so called "ladies" of this establishment! Mutton dressed as lamb and tried it on with me every time I went to the bar to get a drink!
Karaoke was "o.k" (for a laugh) - a must have to any visitor of Looe just to sample the locals vocal strengths! We wet ourselves with laughter every time someone opened their mouths! The landlady seemed to "love" everyone who got up to sing... swinging off their unkempt bodies like a wailing banshee with rotten bucked teeth and sagging breasts which were displayed openly for all the public! All the "locals" seemed to "adore" her.... I can't imagine why! The wife and I had to leave as I think she was going to climb onto the tables and put everyone off their overly priced food!
The restaurant looked half decent though, didn't have time to try out the food but the menu looked varied albeit pricey! Everyone milling around the doors puffing away as you walked by.... reeked of dirty cheap tobacco and a dirty cheap landlady upon arriving back at the hotel.
We were warned by some of the locals about this place...... but we had to see it to believe it! I suggest EVERYONE visit this "delightful" establishment - just for the laughs!
toekneeheart - 24 Sep 2009 19:55
this was a bit of a shock after reading on the comments on here but we were pleasantly suprised by our visit. of all the pubs we went to in looe last week, this was the most polite and friendly service that we had. people were tucking into the food with some relish, the fry upin particular looked well tasty.
seems to be a bit of a turnaround at the moon.
mph - 23 Aug 2009 22:17
Decent food at fair prices and good pints on each of our three visits here over the last couple of years - but atmosphere heavily reliant on which staff are on. Can be friendly and polite and funny, can be stroppy and ready to snarl if you dare ask to be served whilst they are bitching with other staff. I would suggest it is worth the gamble, as the pub itself is quite large, very comfortable and extremely well kept.
saido - 18 Aug 2009 11:08
terrible atmosphere good views sadly a poor pint. surly barmaid and we didnt get a smile or thank you.
roblord - 10 May 2009 21:19
Always liked this pub/restaurant for the view and bar meals rather than the beers as they never have a great choice of local beers when we have been in .
Sadly it has has gone downhill both on beer and food. We ate here and thought food overpriced and clearly from the re-heated micro-meals school of cookery. We wondered if the chef had left there was such a marked difference to previous visits .
Doom was not the best kept pint either. Staff looked miserable and 'couldn't care less'.
Lovely views of the harbour but must try harder with the cellar, cooking and customer service for us to go back
irishcream - 10 Nov 2008 20:07
great views to be had from the beer garden, dogs growling and barking from the roof terrace,in all a bad experiance
anonymous - 23 Oct 2008 09:48
Oh dear, a pub with a great view of Looe harbour, but so let down by the attitude of the lone bar person. Not a smile, welcome or word of thanks, in fact she was probably the most unwelcoming ba person we have ever encountered. The real ale, Courage Best, was not well kept, very cloudy and when it was replaced with another from a different pump, it came out exactly the same. One of the other real beers was not on tap and the Doombar could only be described as 'alright'. The food was reasonably good but not cheap. A place I would not go back to unless there was a change of attitude by the management.
stanley.griffin - 30 Sep 2008 18:31
We ate here in the restaurant last week and the service was very poor indeed. We waited an hour for our starter(despite a booking)and food was poor. Bread rolls still frozen in the middle and my lasagne was only aired in the middle. Clearly microwaved food at restaurant prices. Waitress was surly and when asked by the manager if she was ok, the response was 'no I shouldnt have come in'. Got it in one love- you shouldnt. Off my list now
Cleggy - 26 Sep 2008 13:26
At the riverside in West Looe. We used to stop off here on our walk back up to Hannafore. A good pint of Doom Bar and views of the river. We didn;t try the food but quite a few people were eating so I assume its quite a popular place. We did hear the Karaoke on our way back up the hill one night and I can confirm it was quite awful.
donnyo - 27 Jul 2008 17:30
Nice atmosphere, fantastic food and great staff.
Rustie - 13 Jul 2008 18:59
Gone downhill. All locals been driven out by landlords attitude. Tourists only keep the place going. Ideal for Londoners and chavs
adamisboozingasusual - 11 Jul 2008 23:34
Worth going on a friday just to hear the worst Karaoke you have ever endured and I have been going back for 10 years without improvement .
Lovely harbour views from the panoramic windows and a freindly atmosphere.
Top class sea food if a bit restaurant priced and well kept beer
Badger350 - 30 Jun 2008 23:35
nice pub, more a bar/restaurant than pub, but great window seats overlook the harbour. Nice food, the bistro is excellent. Good beer, outside space for smokers. big screen but the landlord prefers rugby to footy so dont expect all matches to be on.
hellsbelles - 14 Apr 2008 22:05
Nice pub. Could do with taking the sparklers off the real ales but other than that no complaints
pubman1 - 22 Feb 2008 00:17
Sat outside in the sun on the patio with a nice pint of London Pride.
Lovely views, ideal location.

My Rating 8/10
