I heard the news last night, I wish Niall and Linda all the very best for the future and want to thank them for all the memories they have given me over the last 30 plus years. Hopefully "The Pony" will retain its atmosphere and it's clientele, as real pubs with real characters such as those that frequent it are very few and far between.

Good pub, but NOT 10/10!

Isn't CAMRA a bit dated - even my father thought they were a dull lot?

A lot better ways of finding good beer........
tradervic - 18 May 2012 22:51
Had a superb pint of Black Cat mild this evening, this pub seems to be going from strength to strength, local area camra pub of the year and fautless today. Five beers to choose from plus a scrumpy. 10/10 today.
willothewisp - 18 May 2012 22:09
The Waggon and Horses ,North Hampshire CAMRA pub of the year runner up 2011, North Hampshire CAMRA pub of the year winner 2012. Yet the pub has been omitted from the good beer guide for the last two years , I think CAMRA need to look at their good beer guide voting systems as it currently dosn't make much sense.

Two guests from Dark Star today, the ever popular Hophead and the stunningly impressive American Pale Ale straight from the barrel. Excellent.
Picasso09 - 20 Mar 2012 21:12
Another visit and found Dark Star hophead in excellent condition, also Dark Star Original very good. Well attended ,a very good pub.
beerfindergeneral - 16 Feb 2012 19:49
Plenty of intresting beers of late,at the moment a few from the new Sherfield Village Brewery, the jurys out on them at the moment, but the Green Bullet was promising. Also Dark star Hophead and the regular Courage Best and Gales H.S.B. the latter always in excellent condition straight from the cask,a quick turnover on the guests means theres usually something on for all tastes and proves their popularity.A small traditional pub, visit if you are in the area.

I'm new to beerintheevening but not to this pub, always make an effort to call in when passing. an ever improving range of beer available now four at any one time, two pumps and two on gravity. Good to see Dark star beers on fairly regularly, one small gripe ,the Hophead was a little flat tasting last time, but this can happen in any pub on occasion. All in all a top pub, well worth a visit or two.

Called in for a quick pint and sandwich. Great traditional boozer. A real fire, two jack russell terriers, friendly people and a couple of pints of Mordue Five Bridge(s). Also on were the ubiquitous Courage Best and Doombar. Gales HSB I think was the other guest. A dying breed.

Is starfish able to recognise a real pub? I was there on the day of the review and i must say the beer was fine,if the best is not to your liking theres always a choice of three others,as for the food and credit issue ,its a pub not a resturaunt and thank god for that.
willothewisp - 9 Jul 2011 12:28
Best get off back to Somerset then .
Picasso09 - 4 Jul 2011 23:13
This was our 2nd visit and we are still not impressed by this pub. We are fans of real ale, but unfortunately not of Courage. The only other available real ale was average. Have been spoilt by an abundance of Real Ale Pubs in Somerset, since moving to Hampshire, the local pubs just do not come up to the same standard. They are all average except for the Anchor at Lower Froyle which has some class. The food at the Waggon and Horses is average as well, basically everything comes with heaps of chips unless you go for sandwiches or baguettes. Cod and chips (Cod is not fresh but processed fillet so you might as well buy it yourself from the supermarket and save yourself 7.50). Lastly what ever you do, don't expect to pay by Credit Card they only accpet Cash, which wasn't apparent before we ordered.

The introduction of an extra guest ale seems to be working well, todays guests were Hookey Bitter and B and T Black Dragon mild. Well worth a visit and a worthy runner up in north east Hampshire camras pub of the year.
Picasso09 - 15 May 2011 21:00
A cracking boozer, the only real pub left in the area.
beer.sniffer - 22 Mar 2011 21:32
Delighted to find the addition of an extra guest beer now in place.
Old Tongham Tasty from Hogs Back and the excellent Dark Star Hophead were on with the regular Courage Best and Gales HSB.Good news for beer drinkers.
willothewisp - 12 Mar 2011 08:28
Correction the previous review should read.
The H.S.B and Ruby Mild were served directly from the barrel.
Oops.
Picasso09 - 27 Feb 2011 08:24
Now two guest ales available, good news for real ale fans.So yestedays offerings were Courage Best, Gales H.S.B. ,Rudgate Ruby mild and Thwaites Crowning Touch, the best and H.S.B. being ever present, the other two changing every barrel .The H.S.B.are served directly via the barrel.in
The Waggon serves food lunchtimes mon-sat but remains a traditional drinkers pub, a rare thing these days, certainly in this,an area awash with bland chain pubs and food orientated outlets. There are still some decent pubs of this type in the area if you have transport, the Anchor in Yateley, the Bell in Odiham and the Black Horse in Crookham Village to name three but the Waggon and Horses is the pick of the bunch in my opinion. Well worth a visit.

We arrived here after a five mile slog over muddy fields and footpaths. Went into the saloon bar - a small, cosy bar with a log fire and barely room to swing a cat. Slumped in the corner and ordered some Russian Winter draught stout (5.3% - Itchen Valley Brewery). Quite frankly I could have stayed slumped there all afternoon. Food was very good and very good value - I went for a "Linda's Doubles" double burger with chips at 7.75. Who Linda is I don't know but her doubles satisfied me !

Would happily re-visit this pub if back in the area and would recommend it to anyone who just wants to go out for a drink and put the world to rights.

No reviews for nearly a year, so here goes.
3 beers usually on Courage Best, Gales HSB and a guest, which could be anything. Recently it's been a selection of Oakleaf including the excellent Piston Porter.
Both the Courage Best and HSB are always in good nick as well, but I usually stick with the guest.
As for the pub, it divides literally into 2 halfs. There's the half pint brigade in the saloon for those requiring peace and quiet and a range of 'interesting' types in the public if you like a more sociable atmosphere.
The staff are good at their jobs as well, though some dispute that.
The only downside is the 1 guest ale, though as the 2 regulars are so good that is a very minor gripe, hence the 10/10.

Called in recently, its nice to have a drink in a real pub. Good pint of hsb, friendly bar staff and friendly customers. I remember many years ago when this village had quite a few pubs but is now down to just three, this one along with the lamb and the cricketers. The waggon and horses is the best by far.
willothewisp - 12 Mar 2010 09:52
Nice pint of workie ticket the other day ,the other beers were courage best and gales hsb. I was served by the podgy slaphead chap behind the bar i thought he only worked in the kitchen as thats where hes always been whenever ive been to the pub in the past, still he seemed to to have the hang of it and didnt mind topping my pint up when asked . This is a traditional two bar pub with plenty of atmosphere and a seeming decent crowd of customers in the public bar with the occasional oddball thrown in for good measure. The saloon bar seems reserved for the moor senile members of the village who delight in standing in front of the toilet doors watching as people either skirt around them or plough straight through them only to have a look of bewilderment on their faces when the door smashes them in the back upon your return. Stick to the public bar and you will have a decent pint with some decent company . Well worth a visit.
moodybooze - 14 Feb 2010 20:14
Cracking pint of harrier from the cottage brewery this weekend. It certainly got the ex milkman buzzing. There have been some pretty decent guest ales on of late,im looking forward to some more in the future.

Visiting this pub regularly as i do i can report this is a good proper boozer. However i have tn say ive been disappointed not to spot any neon clad trollops the surley south african was smiling and although there might be a couple of porkers who use the pub theyre not going to bite you. So dont get all shook up elvisale1 Just enjoy a good pub if you ever return. This is one the best pubs in the south the courage best is an ok standard session beer the gales HSB is excellent and the ever changing guest beer gives extra sometimes intresting choice with the likes of hopback and dark star beers but sometimes predictable ales such as london pride and tea which are ok but widely availably in the area but thats just my opinion its not all about my taste buds .all in all a top pub visit it.

What has happened to this pub? Now that it is resplendent with flat screen TV it's turned into an offshoot of Ladbrokes. All they need is some perspex at the bar to complete the scene. Even the choice of beer was poor. Oh dear what has happened?
pkr - 28 Dec 2008 19:11
This is my new local and it is fantastic. Great beer, great locals: what more could I want?
Belongtanick - 23 Jun 2008 17:52
One of the best pints of Gales HSB in the south, always immaculate. Good honest pub (very few of these about nowadays). Starting point for the Eagles (Hook) on Wassail night, long may it continue
CaptainDave - 3 Jun 2008 17:03
I don't say this is the best pub in Hampshire but it's got to be in the top 5!
Dan137 - 18 May 2008 01:08
This is everything an English village pub should be. First, top quality well-kept real ales with regular guest beers on tap. Secondly, freshly made pub grub not poncey gastro boil-in-the-bag soup in a basket. Thirdly, warm welcoming atmosphere, bare boards in the public, log fire (real) in the snug. Fourth, professional bar staff who know their trade and serve a proper pint with style and chat not some halfwit Eastern European who is being bedded by the manager. Fifth, a pretty little back garden for those who are addicted to the weed. Sixth on the High Street yet just around the corner from the oldest cricket ground in the world (and free parking if you can squeeze in)
paddymiguel - 1 Apr 2008 17:59
Typical old english pub with a great atmosphere, very good staff (particularly Simon) and excellent, well priced pub food.
Make sure you park in the long stay car park as there are 2 hour restrictions on the road bays and that might not be long enough to enjoy your visit.
zoebeeson - 22 Jan 2008 09:26
This pub is the definitive southern English village pub. Excellent pint of Courage Best, the best doorstep sandwiches served with proper chips, great atmosphere. I urge anyone in the area who has not been there to stop for a pint.
misterwoppit - 15 May 2007 16:26
Pubs simply don't get better than this. Lunchtime food is sublime as are the beers and the ambiance. This place is a credit to its management in every way.

Lived in Hartley Wintney for 5 years until 2002. Whenever I go to see friends in H/W, we frequent this establishment with rampant fervour owing to it's excellent ales, excitable staff, superb landlord and terrific weekend atmosphere. A real treat for the discerning pub goer!
kingdingaling - 25 May 2006 10:52
This is a wonderful pub. It's small, and a bit dark, but there's usually a fire on and plenty of chat to be had. The locals are very friendly, the staff are excellent, and the beer is dependably good. No need to drink the Courage, as there's always at least one guest. There's cards, dominoes and a crib board if you want, and in the summer the secluded beer garden is excellent. Trust me, you'll love it.
bucket99 - 21 Dec 2005 10:42
Now this is what a small town pub should be. Good crowd and friendly to all who visit--a regular offered some free sandwiches to this visitor. Well-kept Courage ales on hand pump. Even has the right decor, down to old wood beams and a bit of smoke in the air.
