user reviews of the Nags Head, Great Missenden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Alas, what used to be a decent local serving fair to middling pub food is now little more than yet another restaurant. On the plus side, it does sell real ale, and good brands too - Rebellion and Tring were the ones I can remember, but if that's all you want, you might feel a little awkward being hemmed in on all sides by the oh so middle class diners.

My mark reflects the fact that I am reviewing it as a pub, not a restaurant.

It's hard to find a pub offering consistently delicious food (based on my 2nd visit yesterday) here in Southern England, so top marks to the Nags head for the tasty lamb (excluding the shredded meat beneath) and 'dauphinois potatoes'. Even the Tempranillo was an interesting and chocolatey (unusually for a red wine). The service was attentive and polite. It would great if the food just wasn't so expensive (26 for main course, side order of veggies and 1 small glass of wine), hence I'm obliged to give it an 8 and not the 9 it deserves. Sorry to have missed the St Bernard..

Not the place to just drink; however an excellent place to eat AND drink beer.

On my visit they had on Rebellion, Fuller's Pride and some brew from the Tring Brewery. The Pride was well kept and a wonderful pint.

The food is excellent, although some may consider it expensive.

There is a very large garden that backs on to the local cricket pitch.
The sound of leather on willow and a good pint - deep joy!

Has been refurbished and is now a gastropub. Garden is good in summer for a relaxing pint, but otherwise drinkers are not made too welcome (for taking up too much space).

Great Pub atmosphere on the outskirts of Great Missenden village with very friendly staff and locals. Landlady has a wicked sense of humour and cooks a good meal as well. The large open fireplace is so appealing on those cold dark winter nights and the beer is of the highest quality. Coco the resident St Bernard keeps a watchful eye on the premises and she is very welcoming to patrons.
Highly recommended and 10* rating.

We thought that on the hottest Sunday of the year it would be nice for the eleven of us to eat in the lovely garden. However we were told that we could n't eat outside on a Sunday because (direct quotation) 'the plates are too heavy' and 'I can't multitask'. I assume this was the landlady as who else could be so cavalier. Apparently the plates are less heavy on other days. Yes all eleven of us went elswewhere. The rating is for the garden alone and the lovely St Bernard dog. However the slide in the playground is not attached to the frame and is hazardous.

Good choice of beers but very food oriented and perhaps just a little too genteel. Interior is quite cosy though in the beams and brasses idiom. Not the place for a wild night out.
